Aug-22-12  chesstoplay: FYI:

Sent you a whistle blower about an "F" bomb post on today's game.

Aug-22-12  TheFocus: I don't mind you pulling the "orgy" ad off, but please leave the FilipinoCupid one alone.
Aug-23-12  Blunderdome: OK, but now it really isn't too early for an Olympiad forum.

  chessgames.com: Some very old business:

After over a year's delay we believe we've gotten most of the bugs out of the Chessgames Playing Zone and are about to officially launch it. We've removed the "BETA TEST" declaration from the launch screen, and a more formal announcement is forthcoming.

Meanwhile, know that any premium member should feel free to play there. It's unofficially launched and no longer in beta-test.

Everybody's ratings have been reset to 1500. (I see a couple of members have been duking it out with computers, that's OK.) We are not planning on having another ratings-reset. Should anybody with a FIDE title want to play, please contact us at chess@chessgames.com and we will reset your rating based on your title. That way if WGM Pogonina or GM Short want to play a few games they don't have to play a thousand patzers just to establish a semi-accurate rating.

We're still figuring out the defaults, but it will be something like:

FIDE FM or WIM = you start at 2200
FIDE IM or WGM = you start at 2300
FIDE GM = you start at 2400

The defaults are not intended to represent your actual strength but just give you a starting point closer to the truth than 1500. (Sorry to the Life Masters, National Masters, etc.: no provisions planned for national titles.)

Once we get all this stuff figured out we'll add it to our Playing Zone Help Page and then let everybody know from the homepage.

chessgames.com: Mark, I wasn't trying to be mean, but given the previous history of you two, I don't think it's a good idea to come here and invent humorous stories revolving around Life Master AJ. I know you weren't being malicious, but it was still off-topic. Together we can keep the peace. Cheers, Daniel.

  kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com

On this page:

Recent Kibitzing Page

I wondered if it would be a good idea to include the Tournament name somewhere, so that for example if someone wanted to see Kibitzed games from the Olympiad, it would be quite easy at a glance.

Aug-30-12  shivasuri4: <perfidious>, only the premium members get to play, so it shouldn't matter, unless you buy/are gifted one yourself.

chessgames.com: <Recent Kibitzing Page ... I wondered if it would be a good idea to include the Tournament name somewhere> That's a really good and simple idea. We even go through the bother of displaying the ECO code, as if users think to themselves "I wonder what the latest news on B32 games is!" Adding a similar feature for tournaments only makes sense.

chessgames.com: <only the premium members get to play> We're still not sure if that's going to be our longterm policy but for testing purposes we're going to start that way.

LoveThatJoker: <CG> Could you kindly delete the long pgn post on Z Almasi vs Bareev, 1997, please?

Unfortunately the pgn there is useless due to the fact that text associated with the '{}' brackets does not show up accurately after kibitzing here on <CG>.

It would be cool, if you could fix this, as I am now forced to e-mail the pgn as opposed to just posting on the game kibitz or on a fellow premium member's personal forum.

Thank you kindly!

  chessgames.com: <LTJ> OK. You're right, arbitrary PGN doesn't work.
Aug-31-12  psmith: A general issue. the site relies on java. not many do anymore. There are recent stories in the news about security vulnerabilities in the latest updates of java, some recommending that users should disable or uninstall java immediately. I have done that, and am now viewing games through Arena.

Any comment on this?

(For example: http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti... "if you don't need java, uninstall it from your system").

WannaBe: A patch have been released.

You can follow the instructions here: http://www.java.com/en/download/hel...

Or do it yourself here: http://www.java.com/en/download/man...

Just make sure you get the right 32/64 bit system one.

Aug-31-12  psmith: <WannaBe>: The article I linked to discusses further vulnerabilities in the patch... (Headline: "Researchers find critical vulnerability in Java 7 patch hours after release")
