Phony Benoni: OK, I give up; what does <1+> mean?

"Like"?

"Dislike"?

"You tell 'em, brother?"

"Shut up already"?

"This kibitzer is a troll"?

"Where's the Ignore Button"?

"Yawn"?

"This kibitzer is satisfactory"?

"This kibitzer is very good"?

"This kibitzer is godlike, and should be listened to with utter respect"?

"This kibitzer is <Phony Benoni>"?

Oct-13-12  whiteshark: <Phony Benoni: OK, I give up; what does <1+> mean?> Are you asking for an illustrative subdirectory?
Oct-13-12  crawfb5: <1+> You can bring a guest?
Oct-13-12  hms123: Unfortunately, the <+1> button is Google's version of <like>. I agree with <OCF>: bad idea.

Now a <-1> button might be interesting...or maybe not.

Oct-13-12  LIFE Master AJ: I forgot, where is the page that has help for webmasters?

  Annie K.: <+1> I already said what I think about that. :p

<LIFE Master AJ> Chessgames.com Webmaster Resources

Oct-13-12  Tomlinsky: Apologies if it's been mentioned before but wouldn't a rating system based on the pieces of the game itself be more appropriate here? No negatives, posts may be promoted from pawn through to monarch by fellow members.
Oct-13-12  Shams: I have a silly question about site functionality. Sometimes I will see the star next to one of my comments on my user page, but when I go to the page in question, my comment is shown as the most recent.

Does this mean somebody wrote a reply, then deleted it? Alternately it could mean that someone on my ignore list has replied to me, but several times I have checked 'new kibitzing' (a page which does not reflect ignore lists to my knowledge) and I don't see a reply there either.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Shams> Recent Kibitzing Page does reflect your ignore list :) The similarly named Recent Kibitzing area on the home page does not, though.

chessgames.com: <Shams: I have a silly question about site functionality. Sometimes I will see the star next to one of my comments on my user page, but when I go to the page in question, my comment is shown as the most recent.> Not silly at all--we live for this kind of stuff.

<Does this mean somebody wrote a reply, then deleted it?> Very clever, but the star wouldn't show up then. The star really just means "there is at least one new post after yours."

<Alternately it could mean that someone on my ignore list has replied to me, but several times I have checked 'new kibitzing' (a page which does not reflect ignore lists to my knowledge) and I don't see a reply there either.> Switching is right: Recent Kibitzing Page is sensitive to your ignore-list, even going so far as to hide entire pages from you if the only participants there are ignored. I think we solved the mystery.

chessgames.com: About <+1> or <up vote> or <like> or <promotion> or whatever you'd like to call it: There are some forums based on that principle which work very well. To its credit, it ends up rewarding people who say things that other people want to hear, so it keeps lots of people happy. But that might also be its biggest weakness: the tyranny of democracy.

A simple chronological discussion model is what we have here, equally respecting everybody from the lowliest patzer to the biggest grandmaster. We don't want to jeopardize that.

Tabanus: Hi <cg> please read <imag>'s last post on the Akobian page. Please also expel/ban/remove <DL> from this game, so that <imag> may come back. IMO Mr. <DL> has provably violated the rule of 2. no spamming etc. Thanks and sorry for not blowing the whistle instead.
Oct-15-12  achieve: <chessgames> What I have been meaning to ask for some time is the following, namely if you could give an approximation of the distribution of the number of your active kibitzers (regardless of preemy status) with regards to their location. It seems so obvious to assume that the majority here is from the US/UK/OZ/NZ, and the estimates for how the percentages relate compared to the Western, Eastern European crowd, etc., and how it may have evolved over to past 10 years of your existence, interests me. Perhaps a sketch for the 24 hour attendance ('members online') "broken down [for?] timezones" is another, perhaps simpler approach.

Just a general idea would of course be sufficient. ;)

Thanks.

I 100% fully support this!!! Please read <imag>'s post(s)... The only thing <DL> is doing is causing disrupt in the teamwork and also offending people in a very direct and offensive way! PLEASE BAN HIM FROM THE CG CHALLENGE!!!

Oct-15-12  DanLanglois: A note, that I can attend to posts here, should the member support forum wish to have a word w/me. I take the rules 100% seriously, and commit to abiding by them, and if there are any misunderstandings of them on my part, don't despair of simply raising the point w/me, I hope that I have a cool head about this controversy.

Controversy happens. Where there is smoke, often there is fire. I see here, the notion being floated to you, that I am offending people in a very direct and etc. way. Actually, the personal attacks on me strike me as not observing your posting guidelines. Whether others are willing to observe your posting guidelines, I am.

I don't really mind the attacks, for my own sake, but I just want to open a line of communication, should it be desired.

Naturally, I'd be curious, what's the commotion and brouhaha. And, you probably would rather it stopped, and I might have to alter my approach or leave, if that's the simplest solution.

I wonder who is being bullied here, though.

chessgames.com: <DanLanglois: A note, that I can attend to posts here, should the member support forum wish to have a word w/me.> Thanks, although we would use email first. <I take the rules 100% seriously> We do not doubt that.

<Actually, the personal attacks on me strike me as not observing your posting guidelines.> We agree, at least in a few isolated incidents, but we chose to stand back hoping that this problem would resolve itself.

<I don't really mind the attacks, for my own sake, but I just want to open a line of communication, should it be desired.> You can always contact us at chess@chessgames.com.

Please understand that nobody gets banned from Chessgames by popular demand; they get banned for breaking rules. We haven't contacted you to date because you have broken no rules as far as we could ascertain.

We would like to believe the World Team can solve its own internal strife. It's critical that anybody can sign-up and start to participate in the World Team. If it was only open to Americans, or to premium members, or to people who the Chessgames admins approve, then it wouldn't be the World Team.

<Naturally, I'd be curious, what's the commotion and brouhaha.> I think it's best for the posts of others to explain the perceived problems.

Oct-15-12  dakgootje: The brouhaha is a rare, but very tasty, bird native to Madagascar.

chessgames.com: Out of the most recent one million visits (not visitors, but visits) the top countries look like this:

United States 288,618
United Kingdom 57,453
India 46,071
Canada 41,102
Philippines 34,854
Germany 33,625
Brazil 27,101
France 24,882
Italy 24,725
Netherlands 21,017

A year ago India would not be as high on that list. I believe we received a lot of exposure in India after the WCC in May.

Srsly, I would never have guessed there were that many French members (or is that just lurkers?) around here. :)
