 | | WannaBe: <playground player> http://www.networkworld.com/news/20... Looks like we are not quite out of the woods yet, the article (published Jan. 18th) explains that the hole is not completely patched. (But there is progress with the Java 7, Update 11) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Houston...>
Good evening.
Please do something about the Alexander Kotov page? <Alexander Kotov
Number of games in database: 667
Years covered: 1935 to 2010
Last FIDE rating: 2247
Overall record: +273 -161 =228 (58.5%)*>
<Alexander Kotov> died in 1981, so you've got him mixed in with a younger <Alexander Kotov>. This here might be the cutoff date marking the original <Kotov> from the reincarnated <Kotov>? <648. I D Wells vs Kotov 1979649. Kotov vs I Fedotov 2008>
<Whiteshark> and <Stonehenge> can you guys figure this out like you have for so many other doubled players? |
|
| Jan-23-13 | | The Last Straw: <jessicafischerqueen>Read his biography. There's another player with the same name.
Maybe we could have chessgames do something like "Alexander2 Kotov". Just a suggestion. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: FIDE lists three players called Alexander Kotov... none of whom have any games in this database. The 2010 Kotov games were all played by FM Valery Kotov (http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?...), while the 2008 games were played by FM Ivan Kotov (http://ratings.fide.com/view_games....) So there's no need to disambiguate between the various Alexander Kotovs yet :) |
|
| Jan-23-13 | | Alien Math: Then needs to add <Ivan F . Kotov , FIDE Id 24126330> to players lists some way |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Switch> that should make it easy for the admins to sort now. On <Kotov>- users of the Google translator should be warned that it reads <Kotov> as <Cats>. So don't be fooled!
Also, sometimes it translates <Salo Flohr> as <Fat>. Though that's off topic I suppose. |

 | | chessgames.com: We sorted out the Kotov situation. There are two new Kotovs in the db, Valery Kotov and Ivan Kotov. Speaking of grimly humorous translations, I've seen WIM Ekaterina Ubiennykh translated as "Murdered" on more than one occasion. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Good heavens.
Thanks so much for fixing the player page. The legacy of CATS is saved! |
|
| Jan-25-13 | | Shams: <admins> There is already buzz about the upcoming Candidates' Tournament taking over the Carlsen and Tata pages. I know it's quite early, but do you think we could get a tournament page up for it? |

 | | chessgames.com: ♔ NOTICE ♔
We're working on a technical problem over here. One of our oldest servers is being replaced. The most noticeable effect is that mail services are currently not working. Later today we may have to go offline briefly, the outage estimated at 15-30 minutes or so. We expect everything to be working perfectly by the end of the day. Sorry for any inconvenience. |
|

 | | chessgames.com: We now have a page for Houdini (Computer). A member submitted a game (although an amateur, he was rightfully proud to secure a draw) so we used his game to get the page started. |

 | | chessgames.com: It's come to our attention that the hardware upgrade yesterday left our credit card processing temporarily disabled. If anybody had any trouble signing-up yesterday, please try again. Email chess@chessgames.com if you continue to have any problems. Thanks for your support and we're sorry for any inconvenience. |

 | | keypusher: For the love of God, would you please stop posting the most recent comment under the board during live broadcasts. It makes the ignore button almost useless. At least conrad93 doesn't post on live games any more. |
|
| Jan-26-13 | | hms123: I would like to second <keypusher's> request. I only use my ignore button during live games to filter out those who consistently make many many useless comments. Having those same comments appear under the board is really annoying. |
|
Jan-26-13
 | | chessgames.com: Some people find that feature valuable. We'll see what we can do to accommodate. Perhaps it can be "collapsible" or a preference option. |
|
| Jan-26-13 | | achieve: And how about a page for the candidates, which was asked for yesterday for IMO good reasons? |
|
Jan-26-13
 | | Annie K.: <cg> any chance of making it ignore list sensitive? That seems to be the main (and recurring) issue here. Also, any further thought about the suggestion of having a bot post automatic move markers (preferably with diagram) to the live games, like you do for the team games? This would not only be great to clarify what position is being discussed, but also let late-comers catch up with the game progress right on the kibitzing page, without opening secondary viewers. :) |

 | | chessgames.com: <Annie K.: <cg> any chance of making it ignore list sensitive? That seems to be the main (and recurring) issue here.> There are some technical concerns. That's not to say they are unsurmountable, just that it would take some work. Anyhow, you are right: making it ignore-list sensistive is the ideal solution. <Also, any further thought about the suggestion of having a bot post automatic move markers (preferably with diagram) to the live games, like you do for the team games?> That's an old idea and a decent one. Years ago when we had an admin typing in the moves (and often making mistakes) it would have been a disaster, but I think now we can safely reconsider that idea. It would also have the happy side-effect of making it clearly obvious which games were once used as live games. What would the format be? Maybe something like this: [23...♗xb3] meaning that we're waiting on White's 24th move after Black played ...Bxb3. <achieve: And how about a page for the candidates> We like that idea and will provide one soon. We could keep it lingering midway down the list of new tournaments until the date arrives. Truth be told, we are always hesitant about making tournament pages too far in advance because this things so get changed or canceled. In our early days there was one tournament that accrued 100+ pages of kibitzing and then never happened. But we received an official press release from London recently, so I think we can consider it a done deal. So in short, look for it sometime before Carlsen blows the roof off Wijk an Zee tomorrow morning. |

 | | chessgames.com: Good news: Daniel says that he can get an ignore-sensitive top comment on the Live Broadcast Page ready by tomorrow morning's game. Since the game is open to the public it should be a good test to see if it makes any difference regarding server load. |

PS - ... now just don't forget to make sure somebody annoying shows up to kibitz, since we'll need a test subject too! ;) |

 | | Annie K.: <cg: <What would the format be? Maybe something like this: [23...♗xb3] meaning that we're waiting on White's 24th move after Black played ...Bxb3.>> I'd really like a visual marker, much like the posts of
User: Chessgames Challenge - without the purple graphic and vote tally of course; just move and diagram. :) |
