chessgames.com: <DcGentle> I've seen that circumstance occur before. The kibitzing here, in spite of being chock full of a number of chess related features, lacks the ability to post a PGN string in the general case. The main two problems are the ones you named, the dual meaning of the {braces} as well as the way we automatically interpret anything that remotely looks like FEN.

The notion of a [PGN] ... [/PGN] type feature has come up before, especially with an eye towards being able to automatically view the game being posted. Ideally the [PGN]...[/PGN] tags themselves would be superfluous as it's fairly easy to recognize when a chunk of text is in the PGN format.

I can't give you an ETA on when Chessgames can have that feature but I'll say it definitely is on our short-list of desirable features.

Mar-05-13  DcGentle: <chessgames.com>: Thanks for the info! :-)

chancho: I just allowed installation of Java update 17 and it now wont allow Chess Deluxe to work.

Java stinks!

Mar-07-13  hms123: <chancho> I use CVD II and it works after the update. I switched to CVD for a minute and it worked as well.

Have you tried uninstalling the previous versions of Java? Or you could just uninstall 17 and re-install the previous update. I am sure that it is in your download folder.

chancho: <hms123> I uninstalled it, then re-installed it.

No change on the Chess Deluxe.

It was asking for the plug in.

Then it hit me (duh) to restart the computer, and it now works.

Mar-07-13  hms123: <chancho> <duh> is my usual response once I have spent hours figuring out something simple.

chessgames.com: Sorry for your frustration. I recently upgraded a Mac to Mountain Lion (or whatever the latest big feline is) and ran into a similar wrinkle.

By the way, I think most of you guys already know this, but a lot of people are becoming frustrated because they fail to click the checkbox depicted in this graphic: http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag...

Click that checkbox and it will stop nagging you.

Here's a link to an interesting article about chess as a paradigm of extreme cleverness in movies: http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/246...

chessgames.com: That is entertaining, thanks twinlark. Although I think in some cases the author overstates his case. For instance, <From there, chess was established as easy shorthand for being deeply brainy. If you’re a clever character, you have a chess set in your house somewhere, whether you get to play it or not.> That concept has been around for a long time. I know for instance that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle made use of it long before Hollywood.

Mar-09-13  DrNyet: Looks like the Player Directory may not be working. I get a blank screen (no 404 error message); got it yesterday and today after rebooting. Haven't noticed any problems with other pages. I use Chrome but just tested it with Internet Explorer with the same result.

chessgames.com: Sorry about the player directory; we were making some small tweaks in its algorithm to more fairly include some lesser known players who really should make the grade. It should work again.

Not surprised, that when you click on 'Directory' only two names appeared, NN & Robert J. Fischer. =))

Annie K.: <chessgames.com: <Today's pun was submitted by the ever-erudite User: Honza Cervenka as "The Acts and Deeds of Blind Harry". Utterly confused at the meaning [...]>>

Admittedly a pun is best if it doesn't need to be explained, but occasionally the option to add a short explanation to the pun submission could be really useful.

For another instance, when I submitted "Simagin No Possessions" for Simagin vs B Baranov, 1952, I really wished I could add the clarification that the pun was referring (via John Lennon's 'Imagine') specifically to the position after 93. Rxb4, when Simagin's last-ditch hope was that Black would fall for the stalemate trap by capturing his last piece. ;)
