alexmagnus: <cg.com> Maybe this question already was asked by someone, but: will it ever be possible to search f.x. for classical games only? After all, the format of the games is marked now (not always correct, but at least for top players mostly) and the search results do filter the different types out....

chessgames.com: We are working on a way to perform searches on classical / rapid / exhibition / etc.

The main reason why this feature had been delayed for so long is that until recently our designations on "gametype" was very unreliable. At this stage it's still far from perfect, but quite useful. Hopefully once we establish a way to search on this the few remaining errors can be weeded out more easily.

Apr-09-13  waustad: I've started a collection of the games in M60MG for my own convenience and wondered if using Fischer's titles for games (Slaying the dragon, for example) creates a copyright issue. If so, I'll remove the names.

chessgames.com: In fact I believe Larry Evans dubbed the games with those titles, but in any case I doubt there is a copyright issue there. Even Amazon lets you peek at the table of contents :)

chessgames.com: OK we've made a decision, and Battle of the Brains IV will be based on <Carlsen Fans> vs <Wesley So Fans> !!!

No, just kidding. We're also going to put the East-vs-West idea on hold as well.

However we really are starting BOB4 in less than two weeks. If you are a premium member and played in BOB3 you're already automatically signed up to the opposite color, otherwise you'll be assigned to a team randomly. Good luck!

Apr-10-13  Alien Math: Possible improvement with Chrome Beta for Android | Chrome Beta For Android Updated To 27 – Brings Fullscreen To Phones, Better Searching, Tab History, And More http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...

The Chrome Team is happy to announce the promotion of Chrome 27 to the Beta channel for Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/... Chrome 27.0.1453.49 contains a number of great new updates including:

Fullscreen on phones - Scroll down the page and the toolbar will disappear.

Simpler searching - Searching from the omnibox will keep your search query visible in the omnibox, making it easier to edit, and show more on your search result page.

Client-side certificate support - You can now access sites that require you to use a certificate and Chrome will allow you to select an installed certificate

Tab history on tablets - Long press the browser back button to view your tab history

Known Issues:
Noticeable lag in text entry on some text fields
chrome://history sometimes show duplicate items
Opening tabs is sometimes slow
Pages may flicker sometimes, especially during navigation

Tabanus: <cg> It seems there are only two pictures of Samuel Newham (1796-1875) on the internet. Both are here: http://www.ashbracken.com/BrHouse-H... and I like this one best (perhaps you can use it):

chessgames.com: <Tabanus> Yes we like that one too.

<Music Kibitzer's Cafe> On the face of it, it sounds like a weird request, but we understand why people are asking for this and we'll give it some consideration.

<About time for a WC forum> We agree, it's getting to be ripe for that.

Phony Benoni: I've recently come across a couple of scores with illegal moves caused by the same error. For instance, in R Ervin vs Reshevsky, 1977:

click for larger view

Black played 11...f5, and White responded with an en passant capture which is notated as <12.gxf6e>. Apparently the "e" was supposed to signify "e.p.", but it had the effect of making the move seem illegal.

I've submitted correction slips for this and the other game, but it occurs to me that if this problem happened twice it probably happened again. Is there some Magical Programming Trick available to find them?

WannaBe: Writing such a parser shouldn't be hard, especially if someone is really, really good with regular expression.

Unfortunately, I am not. I think all you need to look for is a letter, because I can't think of a case, where a move ends with a letter.

Example: 72. Bxe4 N4xb6 73. Raxd4 Qdxd4+

A move, however, can end with +, ++, or #.

  chessgames.com: Hi Phony:

Just fixed that Reshevsky game. Certainly not the first time we've seen that problem before. Apparently some people think that in cases of en passant it's best to just ad lib some explanatory message to help the computers understand the game. I've seen:

12.gxf6e
12.gxf6ep
12.gxf6 e p
12.gxf6 ep
12.gxf6 e.p.
21.gxf6 en passant

and probably other variations as well.

(Of course, the real way to do it properly is to not designate the move as being special in way at all! It's just not necessary. The square that the pawn is capturing on tells the whole story.)

Another thing people like to make a big fuss over is double check: <12.Be6++> and <12.Be6 dbl chk> and <12.Be6+ dbchk> etc.

We might be able to come up with a "Magical Programming Trick" to locate anomalies like the one you pointed out. Clearly there are certainly characters that no move can end with. We can also keep our eyes peeled for some of the known goofups written above. If we do this, I predict will end up with a list of games that probably will have a variety of problems, I just have no idea how many.

In the meantime, if you notice a game that doesn't play by all means tell us about it. I would guess there can't be more than 100 games like that and we'd like to fix them.

Phony Benoni: <Chessgames.com> Thanks. I just found a third one, and realized that all were from the Lone Pine 1977 tournament I'm working on. So perhaps this particular error is localized.

Tabanus: <cg> Also Edward Shirley Kennedy (1817-1898) seems to have only one picture on the internet:

on these sites: http://www.up-climbing.com/en/contr... and http://www.horolezeckaabeceda.cz/ak.... It is a little bit blurred, and also taken about 40 years after he played in London (1851), but otherwise telling. Perhaps you can use it.

chessgames.com: <suenteus po 147> Glad to have you back--no problem with those games, we'll push them through.

I was going to remark how that last game is move-for-move identical with Ulf Andersson vs Polugaevsky, 1991 but I suppose you already know that, having submitted a minor correction on that game.
