 | | WCC Editing Project: Good morning.
<chessgames.com: <Karpova> I think your game was rejected as a duplicate due to our score Spielmann vs H Gebhardt, 1926 under the alternate spelling "Gebhardt". We even used it as a puzzle of the day back in 2007.> On this topic, some of our members who have done, and who do, seriously huge amounts of PGN upload submissions are becoming increasingly frustrated with this exact point: They would like some kind of automated system that tells them- promptly- that a certain PGN was rejected, and why. Is it possible to write some code to do this?
I know some of the most dedicated PGN uploaders are so frustrated by this lack of specific feedback on PGN rejections that they are feeling like giving up, and not bothering to make any more mass uploads. It's these mass uploads that made this possible in the first place: Tournament Index I post this here and now because I noticed you were able kindly to help <Karpova> on a reason for PGN rejection. But I'm assuming that uploaders asking you for that information here isn't the ideal solution? Please look into a software solution to this, an automated response, maybe keyed to an automated email sent to the uploading members? Thank you so much if you can do anything about this.
Best regards,
JFQ |

| Aug-03-13 | | Karpova: I strongly second <jess>' request though I guess this may be hard to do though. Especially with those who sometimes submit huge files. Perhaps some kind of a (spartan) log file?
Nice but probably too unrealistic would be a personal game submission page like <<click here> to see Obnoxious Jerk's game collections> page. Or even a new user submitted games page. |

 | | WCC Editing Project: Good evening.
Sorry to be in here so often lately, but I have an editing question. In the intros to games collections, is there any way to change the text to italics without shrinking the size of the font? |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com
The Historical tournament index is absolutely brilliant. One small thing I noticed and I think might be a good idea for a bit more polish is having definitely "Next" and "Previous" for series events on for example the US Championship: US Championship 1958/59 (1958)
Sometimes there is a virtual "Next" and sometimes there is a virtual "Previous" to go from one US championship to another on two examples I found. Perhaps all US Chess championships can have both "Next" and "Previous" to navigate across the whole chain. Cheers, K |

 | | kingscrusher: Also maybe a link to the Tournament index would cover it for all tournaments, and promote the Index more. Via the Tournament Index it would be possible to find the next or previous in line. |

 | | WCC Editing Project: Good Morning.
Thanks so much for telling me how to make the "big italics" in the games collection intros! Very appreciated. I have begun to use your TOP SECRET method already. The WWC Project editors will be happy about this, since they'll actually be able to read the text now. ##################################
On the PGN upload improvement front, I noticed that you have in fact been planning a new system for some time, a kind of "sandbox", that sounds something like what <Karpova> was just talking about? Here are some of your tantalizing posts from the past on this PGN Sandbox: 28 Apr 09 <as we are working on an alternate system to completely replace the current PGN Upload Utility we are not longer making changes to that software.> 14 Aug 10 <However we don't want to spend any more time improving the current submission software since plans are underway to replace it entirely.> 2 Oct 11 <One of the many side-effects of the <<<Sandbox>>> will be to revolutionize the method of game submission. For that reason, we're not interesting in spending time on tiny incremental improvements to the current upload system.> I really hope you haven't given up on the planned "sandbox" feature. When you get the Super PGN Sandbox feature up and running, you're going to have a great number of happy, happy biographers around. Best regards,

Can we please have a forum for the <2013 POLITIKEN CUP>, which ended today and was won by Parimarjan Negy with the great score of <9/10>? Thanks

I guess you were in the process of creating the forum when I asked for it. |

 | | OhioChessFan: The Andreikin-Leko game in Round 9 of Dortmund isn't reflected in the games nor the cross table. |

| Aug-05-13 | | Bureaucrat: <chessgames.com: <By the way, the permalinks don't hit the target on game pages. Is that a bug?> My guess is that you're not witnessing a bug, but a little "gotcha!" in the way anchor tags work in browsers, specifically when you try to jump to a part of a page that is really close to the bottom.> It seems to have something to do with the browser. I tested on this user profile: User: ulhumbrus (I chose someone who kibitzes on lots of game pages). If I use my iPad or iPhone and click on one of the links to games from that user profile, the permalink doesn´t hit the target. I get the same problem with Internet Explorer at my office computer. However, if I use Chrome or Safari on my Mac at home, it works just fine, and it doesn´t matter if the post is close to the bottom of the page. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Peligroso Patzer> Your games look very important but somebody is going to have to put them into PGN format or they are just anecdotes to us. <Bureaucrat> We just did some testing on a few mobile devices around here, with wildly varying results. It seems that after all these years, the "anchor tag" feature still does not perform consistently (or even works!) across all platforms. <I really hope you haven't given up on the planned "sandbox" feature.> We haven't spoken of it lately precisely because we have begun work on it. I have to stay tight lipped on the details for the time being. I can say that we expect to unveil at least a beta-version prior to the WCC in November. |

<<I really hope you haven't given up on the planned "sandbox" feature.> We haven't spoken of it lately precisely because we have begun work on it. I have to stay tight lipped on the details for the time being. I can say that we expect to unveil at least a beta-version prior to the WCC in November.> Thank you so much, this is truly outstanding news.
It would be excellent to have a <"beta Sandbox PGN uploading feature"> up and running by the WCC in November, that's just around the corner. I should think "beta" testing is a good idea as well in such a challenging case, particularly on such an important feature. I have every confidence that sooner, rather than later, you will have the <PGN Sandbox> up, running, and working bug free. This should bring more than a few valuable, albeit currently frustrated, mass PGN uploaders back to the fold. |

| Aug-06-13 | | YouRang: On home page:
<China-USA Chess Summit
Ningbo, China
Jul 19-27
5 classical and 10 rapid games with teams of 5 men and 5 women playing each other. Top seeds are Ray Robson and Wang Yue. China crushed, winning the classical <31-19> and the rapid 70.5-29.5.> But looking at the games in
China-USA Chess Summit (2013), I see
50 Games, 28 of them decisive (14 white wins and 14 black wins) and 22 draws. Of the 28 decisive games, I see 7 U.S. wins:
Men:
Zhou Weiqi vs Robson, 2013 (Robson) -- Kaidanov vs Zhou Weiqi, 2013 (Kaidanov) --Xiu Deshun vs S Shankland, 2013 (Shankland) -- Lu Shanglei vs Robson, 2013 (Robson) Women:
S Foisor vs Tan Zhongyi, 2013 (Foisor) -- T Abrahamyan vs Ding Yixin, 2013 (Abrahamyan) -- Wang Jue vs T Abrahamyan, 2013 (Abrahamyan) That would mean China had 21 wins with 22 draws, and the U.S. had 7 wins with 22 draws. So, wouldn't that mean that China won 32-18 (not 31-19)? |

 | | chessgames.com: <whiteshark> That's a fine suggestion. <YouRang> You may be right. Since the official site is in Chinese (http://sports.sina.com.cn/chess/) we were just going by the TWIC dossier (http://www.theweekinchess.com/chess...) which reported the 31-19 result. The games from TWIC are the same as the games from the official site, but releasing PGN with an incorrect result is not unheard of. Or perhaps the games are right, and the shellacking was even worse than the reported 31-19. If anybody can identify the discrepancy we'll do what we can to correct it. |

 | | chessgames.com: By the way, we just reviewed the code responsible for inputting new games, and hopefully we won't have this problem with "posthumous games" in the future. (As well as games prior to one's birth.) |
