| Aug-18-13 | | whiteshark: <Do you find the feature very useful?> Yes, I do. I'm searching for various openings based on the ECO code for some of my opening collections, and this additional information 1) makes it a lot more easier and 2) points to a game (of interest) with comments from other users. |

| Aug-18-13 | | Tomlinsky: Thanks <CG> for the name corrrection of Fred Dewhirst Yates. You are, I believe, the first main resource to finally start putting the record straight on this one. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Benzol> <Are any of my game submissions coming close to the top of the queue yet and could you tell me if I've cracked the 5000 submission mark as well?> Truth be told, we should have processed your games last week but postponed them because the Librarian had her hands full and we were were afraid they would trigger a bunch of new player records. Sorry about that: I just processed them and in fact we hardly created any new records. As for your total count:
<grep 'Result ' Benzol.* | wc
4816 9632 167110>
You're up to 4,816.
<Blunderdome> Perhaps "lynch mob" would have been a better word choice, but I think I made my intention clear. |

| Aug-18-13 | | whiteshark: <ceegee> I see what you did there. Thanks for re-installation. :D |
|
| Aug-19-13 | | Benzol: Thankyou <CG>.
<You're up to 4,816.> Just a little less than 200 to go then. Maybe before the end of this year. Who knows? BTW Just to let you know I'm not sure I like being called part of a "witch-hunt" or "lynch mob". OK. |

| Aug-19-13 | | benjinathan: <cg> how about for the hext world cup have a chessbookie "march madness" style bracket contest? |

 | | Annie K.: <cg> Congratulations - after you upload the 10 new audio files I just sent off, we will have passed the 100 mark for the Player Pronunciation Project! =) |

 | | WannaBe: Quick request, in the ChessBookie game, can the player's name (on the ticket, or on the bookie's main page) be a link to their page, so that we can quickly see the rating (and possibly add head-to-head stats?). That would be great, it would also replace Handi-capper's Corner. =) |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi chessgames
I appreciate having an extra 'round' column might cause a space issue on tournament pages but I think a round filter would be very useful to the world cup in particular - you could immediately determine who is still playing in the knockout. Eg round 1 2 3 4 5
Where each number is a clickable filter
Cheers K |

 | | Tabanus: <cg> I agree that a 'round' column on tournament pages would be great. I think there is space for it, and IMO it is no big deal if rounds are not in order because some games are missing date. Games missing date would be easier to identify. |

 | | kingscrusher: Also can I mention again I believe that ' lt-pgn viewer ' should be a JavaScript option. It works well on chessworld - has for years and very importantly for chessgames kibitzing it can easily expose the fen string at any point in the game. People could then easily copy and paste the fen string to get specific discussions on any position in the game. JavaScript trend is much stronger now for iPads etc - and this JavaScript player should be an option IMHO. I also know the author and am sure that all he wants is a credit. No license fee. Cheers K |

 | | chessgames.com: <ltpgnviewer> Official site: http://www.lutanho.net/pgn/pgnviewe... Good idea. I recall reviewing this software some time back. It's very good software. The implementation presented some technical challenges and that's why the project was delayed, but it was no fault of the JavaScript. (And yes, there is no doubt that Javascript--especially combined with HTML5--is rapidly replacing Java.) <round numbers> The problem with searching on round numbers is that the PGN fields for round numbers are notoriously spotty. Just for example, today's game Kamsky vs Mamedyarov, 2013 was listed as "round 27.8"--and that's from the official site. I don't even understand what 27.8 could possibly mean. In situations where the round numbers are accurate and meaningful, a round-search would be very useful. Perhaps it could be one of those features that is enabled for certain tournaments, when we feel that it would work properly. |
|
Aug-20-13
 | | Tabanus: <cg> Can't argue with that! Thanks. Later then. Perhaps only when round numbers are whole numbers (1, 2, ..., 27) and not "27.8"? If technically possible. |

Rounds 1-9 were the first pair of classical games, plus six rounds of rapid/blitz, plus Armageddon. Rounds 10-18 were the next pair of classical games, plus another six rounds of rapid/blitz, plus Armageddon. Rounds 19-26 were the next pair of classical games plus six rounds of tiebreaks (no pairing went to Armageddon)... so this was round 27. The only question is why some games use a completely different numbering system :-) |
|
Aug-20-13
 | | chessgames.com: Exactly Tabanus, it could be like the leaderboard: a feature that only shows up in instances where we believe it will actually work. <Rounds 19-26 were the next pair of classical games plus six rounds of tiebreaks (no pairing went to Armageddon)... so this was round 27.> Wow, you cracked their code. Hey, that could be a Christmas clue: "Given these FIDE round numbers, what will be the numbers of the top three boards next round?" |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Good morning.
Is it my imagination, or are there now fewer results displayed on the front page of Recent Chessforum Activity? Please let me know if there are, so I know it's not some problem with my <evil Chrome> browser. If it's true, any reason for this? I'm not necessarily complaining. Thanks to the "short list" I have on my screen, I discovered that I could actually expand the list by clicking on "earlier kibbutzing" at the top left of the page. Who knew? |
|
Aug-21-13
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <jessicafischerqueen: If it's true, any reason for this?> Not as many people are kibitzing in their chessforums. Not just chessforums, either, though the effect is most visible there. Used to be there were more than 1000 kibitzes per day, now we're lucky to get 800 (and that's with 100+ posts per day on the Rogoff page). The number of registered people visiting this site is similarly down. |
|
Aug-21-13
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Why are we losing Kibbutzers? |
|
Aug-21-13
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: That kibitzers don't stay here forever is inevitable; people die, or no longer have as much free time, or lose their interest in chess, or get fed up with all the insults and flame wars. The totals are falling because new users no longer adequately replenish the stock; the number of newly registered users is at its lowest in ten years. |

 | | chancho: Some people don't want to spend the money on the site with the economy in it's current condition. Then what Switch said... oh, and <tolengoof's> trolling does not help either. |

| Aug-21-13 | | TheFocus: I won't even mention <AJ> and his turmoil. |

| Aug-21-13 | | benjinathan: I think my presence here is reducded. If it wasnt for the team game I am not sure whether I would come at all, and it is certainly the only reason for my premium. I just find the stupid fights too much. The whole Wesley So thing is absurd and infects seemingly nearly every page. Personally, I would rather see it be an all pay site with some free trial system. At least then there would be an ineterest in maintaining some degree of decorum and intelligent discussion. But I guess that would adversely affect ad revenue. |
|
| Aug-21-13 | | Robed.Bishop: I think we can all agree that some percentage of users find flame wars disagreeable, but it strikes me as superficial to blame reduced kibitzing on the wars. I would think that it would be the other way around, that flame wars increase kibitzing. The hotter the flame, the more kibitzing. This, of course, assumes that the number of users stays the same. If, on the other hand, the number of users is down (differentiated from the number of new users to replenish the stock), then we'd need to compare the number of kibitzes to the number of users to see if kibitzing itself is down, or if kibitzing is down because the number of users (premium or not) is down. For example, if the site had 1000 users that generated 500 kibitzes, and now the site has 500 users that generate 250 kibitzes, kibitzing has only decreased because of the loss of users. I'm certain that there are better statisticians than me here at the site who could either better explain this or even correct me if my analysis is wrong. I would guess that the vast majority of users don't comment on the flame wars at all, so blaming decreased usage on flame wars based upon a vocal few seems to me to be jumping to a conclusion. There may well be other reasons that the number of users is down, the economy, etc. My point isn't that flame wars are good for the site, it's that more information is needed before it can be said that flame wars are the cause of either reduced users or reduced kibitzing. I'm not offering my opinion here on whether flame wars are good or bad, though it appears the admins have. Isn't a kibbutz some kind of farming thing? |
