chessgames.com: <Lonnie> I don't feel obligated to respond to every critical mention of Chessgames, even from respected sources.

However, the Streatham and Brixton entries are very specific in their scope (unlike the scattershot Urcan piece) so a comment on that particular issue may be forthcoming shortly.

<Can you speculate as to when that might be?>

Not really, but if I had to guess, I'd say sometime over the course of the next few months.

<Where should we look?>

Honestly I haven't decided. Perhaps the most appropriate venue would be to submit a reply to ChessCafe for publication.

I hope that settles this matter for the time being and that you (and others) stop using this forum for non-support issues.

Jan-13-14  parisattack: < chessgames.com: ...I hope that settles this matter for the time being and that you (and others) stop using this forum for non-support issues.>

I hope so, too. It was a non-starter from the get go and the <Admin> has been far more gracious than I would have been.

Peddle it somewhere else, <Lonnie.>

Jan-13-14  Lonnie Lurko: <so a comment on that particular issue may be forthcoming shortly.>

And where would we look for that? (I ask because obviously that wouldn't go to the Chess Café.)

Excellent... except that there's no such game as Karjakin-Nakamura. This is turning into another Alekhine-Fletcher :-)

kingscrusher: I would just like to mention this site is coming under some scrutiny on the ECF History forum recently.

I am indicating I like using this site, and accept it might have inaccuracies basically. I particularly like the Tournament History index.

If anyone interested in Chess History who uses this site as a historical resource, would like to "chip in", here is the thread. You don't have to be an ECF member.

kingscrusher: Be warned on my previous note : Some are historians from "chesscafe".

I would just like to say though for me personally this site is becoming increasingly useful and convenient as actually a Historical resource, but for these Historians, accuracy is very important )primary importance) and they follow a model that everything should be 100% accurate first.

I feel the Chessgames.com model follows the Wiki model, and as such it has pro's and con's. Accuracy may be less, but community spirit and breadth, etc are all +'s of this site.

Best wishes

Domdaniel: I don't think that there are *that* many historical errors in the CG database. Where they exist, and are open to resolution, they are generally cleared up fairly quickly. However, the whole business of fixing errors is complicated by the *vast* number of inaccuracies in opening classification. A great number of games have the wrong opening classification. In many cases, it's easy to see how it happens -- but that doesn't make fixing it any easier. One idea might be to separate opening corrections from historical and other related problems -- if all corrections are lumped together, the backlog may seem insurmountable. But it should be possible to sort problems and corrections into appropriate categories.

chessgames.com: <separate opening corrections from historical and other related problems>

We've already done that. When the CG Librarian gets a slip saying "This should really be A18 and not A00" she presses a button "ECO PROBLEMS" and the slip goes into a special archive for future handling.

It doesn't do us any good to change the ECO code on a specific game by hand, because there is software which has FEN positions of the various openings, and unless we change those data the identical error will keep reappearing.

White to play on move 24 would make a great Tuesday puzzle on the theme of <TRAPPED PIECES>.

I just submitted this game via the <PGN UPLOAD UTILITY>. Any idea how long before it gets into your database? Thanks.

WannaBe: Wish to report that latest Java update (version 51) was successfully installed on Win7, IE9 both 32/64 bits version of browser and was able to view games with Chess Viewer Deluxe II

Also successfully installed on Win8.1 64-bit IE 11. And was able to view games.

Domdaniel: <CG> The nasty crap in the <trulips> profile doesn't seem to have gone away. The use of profiles to pursue personal vendettas is particularly offensive. Even when the 'victim' in this case was an offender in the past.

Hey, as the winner of the 'best profile' Caissar, does my voice carry extra weight when I pontificate on the subject of profiles? There should be *some* benefits, apart from fame and fortune...

chessgames.com: <Dom> Your opinion is always welcome, Caissar or not.

Truth is, I was intending to delete the trulips profile but wanted to wait a day or two to see if he emails us asking for reinstatement, at which point I could tell him to fix his profile. Of course we know, chances are far more likely he is getting settled into his new sockpuppet as I type this.

Jan-15-14  musicmanTRIBALx: I also cannot view any games due to Java being blocked. I am using Firefox as a browser. I would very much like to know what the issue is and how to resolve it.
Jan-15-14  Thanh Phan: Alien Math seemed to find one working solution Viewer Deluxe chessforum

Apparently you have to add in the main page of chessgames in the java control panel under the security tab,

and for Firefox it's a couple extra things to click thru when you first attempt to view a game after updating your allowed sites
