<<... most users are unwilling to try changing settings.>>

What about the users like me (and several others) who have spent hours playing with settings ... and still have not seen any real, quantifiable results???.

I think that - on this matter - CG is afraid to tell the truth.

Simply put, all the other viewers may be dead and have gone the way of the dinosaur. (If not, then someone is withholding some information that shows the key to solving this problem.)

It is either one - or the other ...

Richard Taylor: <LFMAJ> I could well be that CG.com (who are made up of team of trickesters and shysters to say the least) have especially designed the system with people such as yourself (and such as me and poor old X) in mind: the ticket might be to expect nothing like a (well a paesano in some dark strange place where there are no MacDonalds)...In NOT doing anything the answer to the Java Mystery will come. Or whatever problem you have: you have to NOT think about it if you see what I don't mean.
Apr-04-14  davide2013: I'm working on the Nimzo-Larsen attack, could you add this game to guess the move? (unfortunately it goes over the move limit of 3-4 moves, over 80, and I cannot do it by myself) Blatny vs C Bauer, 2000 Thank you.

  WCC Editing Project:

<ENABLING JAVA on Windows 7 with Chrome Browser>

To allow Java, you need to do two (2) things.

1. Control Panel- Programs- Java

Once you click on the Java icon, click the "security" tab. Slide the bar down to the "medium" setting. Click "apply."

2. On the "security" tab setting, you'll also see a box labeled "Exception Site List."

Click "Edit Site List."

A bar will come up where you can type in the <chessgames.com> address.

IMPORTANT: You can't just copy and past the cg.com web address. You absolutely have to type in the cg.com address by hand, and the address has to look EXACTLY like this:

(h)ttp://www.chessgames.com/

(I put the first "h" in http in parentheses, or else you won't be able to see the exact address in this kibbutz. When you actually type the address into the "Exception box", DON'T TYPE IN THE PARENTHESES)

If you miss even one character, it won't work.

Once you've typed this EXACT address into the "exception box," just click "add".

NOW YOU ARE FINISHED.

When you go to a cg.com game page, now a security warning will come up asking you if you want to run Java. Just click "ok" and you'll see the game in Java format.

chessgames.com: Is that true, that Chrome users need to whitelist us two times? If that's the case we can update Java Help Page. Unfortunately there may be another issue with some users of Chrome, something about 64-bit compatibility.

chessgames.com: <LESS THAN ONE PER CENT!!!!!> A few months ago it was at 0%, because we ran a program to reset everybody's default to pgn4web. The sliver of a percentage you see are the longtime power users who didn't want to give up CVD. I don't expect all 200,000 users to struggle to get Java working on their computer.

<What about the users like me (and several others) who have spent hours playing with settings ... and still have not seen any real, quantifiable results?> I still offer help via email.

If you went to the store and bought a brand new computer out of the box, and followed the steps on our Java Help Page, I am 99% sure it would work. Unfortunately we're not dealing with a pristine computer so there are numerous possible confounding factors here:

1. Perhaps you have the bug where multiple versions of Java coexist on your system as mentioned recently. (Remedy: uninstall all versions, then reinstall the newest one.)

2. Perhaps you have some anti-virus / anti-malware software which is blocking Java, or blocking the program that installs Java. (Remedy: turn it off temporarily to install Java.)

3. Perhaps you actually have malware. (Remedy: get anti-malware software and remove it.)

4. Perhaps there is a security setting in your browser that contradicts the security settings in the Java Control Panel, as mentioned above is possible in Chrome. (Remedy: try a different browser and see if your results change; if so, then you know that it's a problem on the browser level.)

<I think that - on this matter - CG is afraid to tell the truth. Simply put, all the other viewers may be dead and have gone the way of the dinosaur.> Oh come now, I've spoken on this subject endlessly.

It's not "chess viewers" that are going the way of the dinosaur, it's Java itself. To quote myself, <[pgn4web is] the only viewer we have guaranteed to work in the future.> (chessgames.com chessforum)

Apr-06-14  hms123: <chessgames.com> I still use CVD with Chrome (64-bit). I know what I am doing and uninstalled previous versions of Java, etc. etc. etc. I get the little box asking permission to run Java. I live with it.

I use pgn4web on my iPad and it is fine. I tried it on my desktop and got tired of it. I would rather click the little Java box every time just to have the functionality for CVD. I have gotten over it. Others should as well.

thanks.

Apr-06-14  LIFE Master AJ: <Alien Math> Just one more question ... and I will be forever silent on the subject.

Can you make the CVD work on YOUR computer?

Apr-07-14  Alien Math: Have chess viewer deluxe on all browsers working after some while, only time not use are when days puzzle are active and not login,

Chrome browser had to search online for uninstall java program as normal uninstall leaving invalid entries in registry which conflict with a new java install

Apr-07-14  LIFE Master AJ: << 07-14 <Alien Math:> Have chess viewer deluxe on all browsers ... >>

The you are a more savvy computer guy than I am. (I have uninstalled and re-installed java numerous times ...)

Apr-08-14  LIFE Master AJ: I have submitted about 100 games in the last few months ... when I check, I don't see any of these games in your database.

Any reason for this?

Apr-08-14  LIFE Master AJ: When I remember to do this, I post a copy of the PGN on my player page, or in my forum, some of these go back to 2006. (One - I just checked for - has still not been uploaded here.)

Domdaniel: <CG> In the game Karpov vs Kasparov, 1985, if I use the 'find similar games' link, something goes wrong. The first six moves are fine: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nb5 d6 6.c4 Nf6 ... ... but now something goes wrong:

7.N1 c3 ... is given as the next pair of moves, rather than 7.N1c3 being just the next white move. After this, the moves are out of phase:
8.a6 (should be a black move)
8...Na3 (should be white)
9.d5 cxd5
10.exd5 exd5
11.Nb4 Be2
12.Bc5 (black!)

... any ideas?

Apr-08-14  Thanh Phan: Found this today,
Scramble to fix huge 'heartbleed' security bug

The bug has been present in versions of OpenSSL that have been available for over two years. The latest version of OpenSSL released on 7 April is no longer vulnerable to the bug.

Full protection might require updating to the safer version of OpenSSL as well as getting new security certificates and generating new encryption keys. To help people check their systems some security researchers have produced tools that help people work out if they are running vulnerable versions of OpenSSL.

Apr-08-14  Benzol: <chessgames.com> <<NZ Seniors> Sure we'd upload those games, but we'll have to see how good the official site is on releasing scores. We'll keep an eye on http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve... and see if download links appear.>

<chessgames> Would you like me to have a go at uploading the games?
