 | | OhioChessFan: Yes, FEN searching would have been a better way to phrase what I meant. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: The problem with FEN searching is that the diagram won't appear for technical reasons (specifically, CG wants to color "5rk1" red even though it appears inside the FEN code used to create the diagram), so you can't immediately tell if it's the diagram you're looking for or a different position with some similarities. |

 | | chessgames.com: If we want to really implement FEN searching we need to write software that checks each post to see if it contains a position, then stuff that FEN into a special table made just for that purpose, and work from there. It could be done. I guess it's a question of the demand. I doubt very many people will search for FEN very often, at least in the normal Search Kibitzing page, but one neat byproduct of such an effort would be that the Opening Explorer might automatically link to posts on CG which reference the opening the position. That might be interesting. |

 | | chessgames.com: I heard somebody mention that they didn't want to participate in the Pun Voting Booth because they also submit puns, and they feel a conflict on interest. They should know that it will intentionally prevent you from voting on your own puns, so there is no problem with being both a submitted and voter. |

 | | chessgames.com: <It must be said that one or two kibitzers - one in particular - come close to trolling.> This is the first year that the WCC has been an open-to-all-members event so it's not a huge surprise to see some new accounts abusing the privilege. No need to mention names. I can assume the whistles we've received tell the story. We'll see if we can reign things in a bit more strictly for Tuesday's game, if need be. |

| Nov-12-14 | | zanzibar: Another random suggestion for <CG> - Q - Why not have two <Update> buttons on a game collection's edit page? * * * * *
I'm updating the intro to a collection I have, which has hundreds of games: Game Collection: Biel Interzonal 1993 (FIDE) It actually has 431 games.
So, after doing several edits, and updating, I realized I was doing a bit of scrolling in the edit box, and then to the bottom of the page to update, then scrolling back up to view it, etc. etc. (Repeat and rinse as needed)
OK, I can do <Home/End> but the focus is in the edit box. Not only that, but I really just want to do an <Update>, then right click <View> so I can quickly look at the edit results in a tab and close it out before diving back in. Anybody follow this - does it make sense?
It's a small convenience - but one I think that would be appreciated by all who work with large game collections. (<Thomastonk> where forth art thou?) |
|
| Nov-12-14 | | zanzibar: For that matter, why not have two <View> buttons as well? (One after the edit box, the other after the game list) |

Can we please have a forum for the <2014 TAL MEMORIAL BLITZ TOURNAMENT>, currently being lead by Mamedyarov with an amazing <10/11: +9 =2 -0> performance? Thanks

| Nov-13-14 | | kellmano: Hi - I'm a computer idiot and my version of Java broke down some time ago on my laptop. Months ago I tried to download it and got told it was blocked, but I tried again today and it said it was successfully downloaded but I get a picture that looks a bit like a blank TV screen in the top left of where the game should be. I have uninstalled old versions. Any help you can offer? It'll have to be baby steps as I'm not proficient in this kind of thing. |

 | | Annie K.: Haven't done anything with Java lately, so just from vague memory - it might need to be authorized, even if installed. This may need to be done from the main internet options panel of your browser, but for a first aid, if you have a mouse, try right-clicking the blank area where it should be, and see what options you are offered there. |

 | | chessgames.com: I think WannaBe flubbed the link, but here's what it says: Please see our Java Help Page especially the part starting at "HOW TO WHITELIST CHESSGAMES.COM FOR JAVA OPERATION ON YOUR SYSTEM". |

<WannaBe> didn't flub the link. Do you have some people on ignore? That can be a problem, you know. ;-) |

 | | WCC Editing Project:
<Admins>
Regarding STEP THREE in the "how to let Java open up the finer chess viewers instructions," possibly this should be added- unless it is only an issue on my computer? When it's time to enter the chessgames URL into the box, I always have to type it in manually. If I copy and paste the URL into the box, the URL is not added to the "go list." Hats off for running your own ignore list! This can provide a welcome breather. If I'm on the list, for example, you will gain extra "existence time" by not having to spend the time to read this post. |

 | | chessgames.com: <If I copy and paste the URL into the box, the URL is not added> I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case; I've witnessed Java software disable cut-and-paste for whatever reason. That might be a helpful tip, something like "Some people report that copy-and-paste does not work in this field, so in necessary, type it by hand." |
|
Nov-13-14
 | | Annie K.: In case of long and difficult to memorize URLs, there are some tricks worth trying. There are times when pasting directly won't work, but pasting first into Notepad and then selecting and pasting from there, will. There are also times when selecting copy and paste from the mouse right-click options doesn't work, but pressing Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on your keyboard does. :) |

<Annie>
Thanks for those tips! I have archived them, and I will test them out on the next JAVA update. |

| Nov-14-14 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> I notice that you've already added the new <Update> button. Much appreciated, and many thanks! |

|
| Nov-14-14 | | kellmano: Thanks for the help everyone but that didn't work for installing java. I still get the same image. Bit weird as I thought java was central to lots of websites. They bleat on about how it is installed on 3 billion devices. Well, not mine, nor any at my work. |
