 | | Richard Taylor: Thanks for the comments re primes. I am aware of e.g. the Pythagorean aversion to say the sq root of 2 etc. I got more interested in some of the philosophic issues surrounding maths when a fellow chess player* at a tournament was reading 'Is God a Mathematician' by Mario Puzio. But I had other more or less popular books on maths and or philosophy. J D Barrow's 'Impossibility' is fascinating. Also some books about infinity etc Joh Stillwell e.g. 'Yearning for the impossible : the surprising truths of mathematics' John Stillwell.
I struggled with that book but it is fascinating. Some of the proofs I couldn't quite see, but I could follow a lot of it. By the way I am sure that formula (excluding 2) of the primes has to be
2n+1 or 2n-1 if n is the number of the prime.
So 2 is number 1; 3 is number 2 and so on.
So 2(2)-1=3 for the second prime.
Then for 7, the 4th prime 2(2)-1=7
And 13 is 2(6)+1 = 13
I think for this deep insight I should be awarded a professorship in mathematics on US$30,000,000.00 per dies at an infinite interest rate of daily increase. Or the Nobble Prix? *On FB another chess player, quite strong has become a fanatical atheist, and in opposition was the fellow chess player (who was one of the few to beat me at the tournament where he was reading said book!) - that fellow was able to disprove (the various old arguments) for and against God. |

 | | keypusher: cg, this has probably been suggested a million times, but have you considered listing some major upcoming events on your front page? I imagine there is some interest in Tata Steel and the Nakamura-So match (which I just learned about, adventitiously, on the So page). |

 | | AylerKupp: Now that The World vs. Arkadij Naiditsch game is over, it's time to start the usual search for a proper name for the game. My vote (if I am allowed one) goes to <"Hocus Pocus">, a term initially used in a non-complementary way in this post: Chessgames Challenge: The World vs Naiditsch, 2014, alluding to an analysis of a line consisting of 22.Bd2 and 23.Bb4 that tempted our opponent to play 23...Nxb4 with a seemingly equal or even better position. Then with 24...c6 our opponent made a non-obvious mistake and his position fell apart, as if by magic. Anyway, my 2 cents. The selection of a fitting name for these games is beginning to be taken seriously by many. Perhaps for future games you can consider implementing a formal voting system when those that signed up for the came can vote for their favorite name within, say, a few days. |

 | | OhioChessFan: "Hocus Pocus", or "Do the Hocus Pocus", 'twill never be another chance, it's now or never, unlike the also good c6-ness and various Berlin Wall suggestions. |

Dec-29-14
 | | Annie K.: Hmm... as someone who didn't read the almost-700 pages of in-game kibitzing, the 'Hocus Pocus' pun has exactly zero meaning to me. The c6 pun, on the other hand, is easily understandable just from playing through the game itself. |

|
| Dec-29-14 | | DanLanglois: I think that in naming games, there's something to be said for having an accessible name, so that people 'get it'. It's not being named merely for the participants. I think that if this is not obvious without having to be explained, then there isn't much hope, but here it is anyway.. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Suffering from c6-ness> That's really clever. <Hocus Pocus> is good too. The cheap zinger or the deep metaphor? It's a hard call. <listing some major upcoming events on your front page?> We do all the time, but usually only a few days before it begins. The big exceptions are World Championships or candidates matches which we've put up months in advance. We should probably do it earlier than we do. |

 | | Penguincw: Don't forget about Carlsen vs Anand, 2014 (Game 2). This game is still awaiting a pun: "Fall of the Wall" or ".44 Magnus" are both great choices, but which one? |
|
| Dec-30-14 | | WinKing: I like both 'c6-ness' & 'Hocus Pocus' as pun names for the World game. I agree with a few others here that unless you participated in the game they may not fully understand where 'Hocus Pocus' is coming from. |

 | | keypusher: Copied from Ballard's page.
<skytzo985: I'm posting here to make sure at least some people see that Pat Ballard's win over AJ Goldsby has been removed from chessgames.com.> cg, is this true? If so, why was it done? Balla observed that AJ's victory over him is still present. |
|
Dec-30-14
 | | chessgames.com: <keypusher> The short answer is, that I don't recall. I do remember this: there was a block of maybe 30-50 games from AJ which were removed because a spot check showed that a few of them were utterly worthless for inclusion. We didn't go over each game to judge them on their merit (that's supposed to be the job of the uploader) so after seeing a few games of poor quality the entire lot got revoked. It's possible that Ballard's game got caught up in that deletion, but again, I don't really recall. There are other possible explanations as well. I emailed Ballard and let him know that he is welcome to resubmit any game that he thinks has merit. |

 | | chessgames.com: <The home page is, I think, still inviting people to register to play GM Naiditsch.> You mean the banner ad? Yes, I suppose it does, but we want to keep that ad there for at least a few more days because that's how people are accustomed to go to the challenge page. |
