 | | chessgames.com: Mark, the only thing that I can think of is that the field is sensitive to whitespace, e.g. " 125" is not a valid bet, due to the leading space. I just cleaned up the code a little bit to be more robust with regards to spaces. Let me know if it keeps doing it. |

| Aug-26-15 | | morfishine: <chessgames.com> Sorry for the slow reply, I don't normally search for reply posts with my username spelled 'morphishine' but NP. I appreciate your in depth explanation, especially the somewhat amusing process where Lee (Sargon) "allowed" <CG> to choose amongst a smorgasbord of rather mundane offerings...nonetheless, thanks <Check It Out> On your comment about the author's intent, these days its not so much the author's intent but how its received. With that said, while I have little time for all those "offended cry-babies" in society who try to latch onto the "sympathy bandwagon", when it comes to the character of a chess player, I try to be as objective as possible. In this case, having digested the "author's intent", I've dismissed it as irrelevant. In other words, who cares what the authors intent was; the real question is "What will people think going forward?"; Especially if the viewers interpret the line as actually hanging somebody because they were a suspected nazi, when in fact the person was of a sound moral character? I don't like the connotation

 | | chessgames.com: <morfishine> Sorry about misspelling your handle, and anyhow, I understand your perspective. It's no bother to me at all if we change it to "Fast and Loose" retroactively, and in fact I just did that. I doubt it's a nominee for a Caissar either way. |

 | | FSR: Two suggestions:
Today's So-Nakamura game should be the next GOTD, using <Gregor Samsa Mendel>'s pun "Mate me in St. Louis." You should update the ChessBookie standings at, say, 8 P.M. every day. It's a long wait until you do so in the morning. |

 | | WannaBe: Can we open a can of worms?
Since players page have current rating, or highest rating achieved, and I know it's not applicable to older generation of players... But, however, is it possible, to search, or refine the search, by rating? Example, John Doe vs < 2500, or even possibly Jane Doe vs > 2600 & year > 2005 & p1=white & eco = B23 Or would such search only leads to more "Disagreements" ? |

 | | Penguincw: < You should update the ChessBookie standings at, say, 8 P.M. every day. It's a long wait until you do so in the morning. > Well actually, since I'm the bookie, I think I should decide when the leaderboard should be updated, since I know when I'll actually be online. The times most ideal for me would probably be 11:15, 17:30 and 22:45 <cg> time. These are the times I actually want them to be updated. So if I want it to be updated at 11:15, it'll probably say it's updated at 11:44 or something. Note that these times are actually good for the rest of the leg, be it weekday, weekend, holiday or special occasion, these times are good for me 7 days a week, 365 days a year (or you know, just the rest of the leg). Thanks. :)
PS/BTW: Will the tropical storm affect you in anyway? |

 | | WannaBe: Never mind that, as ratings change over a players' career, it's not that useful and probably just open a can of worms that's not worth it... |

 | | chessgames.com: <Well actually, since I'm the bookie, I think I should decide when the leaderboard should be updated> That's not a bad idea. It could be on a very slow schedule and also include an "update now" button for the bookie. <PS/BTW: Will the tropical storm affect you in anyway?> The hosting facility is not even in the projected strike area so it's very unlikely that the server will suffer any downtime. However if Naples, Florida loses power member support might be unavailable for a short time. |

 | | FSR: <chessgames.com> This is apparently the first-ever Sinquefield Cup game to end in checkmate. But no doubt there are other games played in St. Louis that have ended that way. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <cg.c: Sorry about misspelling your handle, and anyhow, I understand your perspective. It's no bother to me at all if we change it to "Fast and Loose" retroactively, and in fact I just did that. > Bad call. I know I was specifically responsible for one changed pun, and I have often mentioned the challenge of having fun with a name vs. making fun of a name. That said, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the original pun. I am still shocked <morf> has taken this point so far, and a lot disappointed you gave in. If you put this to a vote (admittedly not a perfect way of determining truth, but still), I think you'd find way over 95% think the pun as written was fine. <morf> you're wrong on this one. |

| Aug-30-15 | | rogge: I think 95 % don't care. |

 | | chessgames.com: We were first intending to let it stand, just for the principle of the matter. I realize morfishine is apparently alone in his opinion. If 1 person in 100 misconstrue an innocent pun to be a character attack, why should that be our concern? On the other hand, I don't know anything about Mr. Loose, so perhaps morfishine's historical knowledge gives him a better understanding of the situation. Perhaps "hang loose" was a pun dating back to when he was still alive, in which case it would actually be in very poor taste. I have no idea. Anyhow, this just didn't seem like a big issue, either way. We could leave it and probably never get another complaint. Or we could change it and surely never get another complaint. We sometimes take stern stances on issues but this just didn't seem like an important fight to pick. |

 | | Penguincw: < FSR: <Penguin> Sorry, didn't mean to step on your toes. > It's alright. Sorry if I came off as too angry or condescending. :) |
|
| Aug-30-15 | | morfishine: <CG> FWIW: Originally, two others mentioned it was in poor taste, and slow old me took awhile to digest what they were alluding to. Only then did I raise the issue. So I am not alone on this. Perhaps I may have overreacted somewhat and it is good to know the author did not intend it in that vein and finally, I am through with this. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for taking the time <OhioChessFan> Thats twice now you've stated I'm "wrong" on this one and in fact, both times your comment is inaccurate. Why? There is no right or wrong on this issue ***** |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: I remember when <MrMelad> was offended by the pun "Dutch Oven" (which he felt was connected to the Holocaust) and asked for it to be changed (it wasn't). I guess the lesson here is that as more puns are used, the probability that someone is offended by an imaginary Nazi connection approaches 1. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <morf> there is no objective answer as to how something will be received going forward. That didn't stop you from appealing to it. That lack of a black/white delineation apparently doesn't apply to you. |

 | | chessgames.com: We just had a server outage for several hours. It's the same issue as last time. The irony is that our network admin was working on the new replacement router at the time it happened, but it wasn't quite finished to replace the old one. Our apologies, but everything is OK for now. |
