 | | chessgames.com: <"A problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded."> I've seen that error, not just on Chessgames. I read that it can be triggered in some browsers by a page incompletely loading. You use Safari, is that right? Is there ever a case where a game just won't load no matter how many times you refresh and try again, or is it just a temporary nuisance? |

I read that it can be triggered in some browsers by a page incompletely loading. You use Safari, is that right?> Yes, that's right. Chrome at work, where I don't seem to have the problem. So maybe it's a Safari issue. <Is there ever a case where a game just won't load no matter how many times you refresh and try again, or is it just a temporary nuisance?> I should make clear I'm talking about the computer analysis board that pops up when you hit the e8 square. I'm not having any problems with the game page per se. The analysis board always comes up, but then it reloads (resetting to the original position) after a short time. |

I would have placed my bets at the bookies last night if I'd known that the site would be down today, I missed any chance I had of a last big pay off. |

| Oct-01-15 | | sonia91: <chessgames.com> Where are the games from Women's World Team Championship 2015 that I've submitted via email three weeks ago? I think also you should cover the Karpov Poikovsky tournament (with Morozevich, Shirov) currently underway (today they already played the 4th round and Inarkiev played a brilliant game against Morozevizh that deserved to be in the database) |

 | | chessgames.com: <I should make clear I'm talking about the computer analysis board that pops up when you hit the e8 square. I'm not having any problems with the game page per se.> Oh, I'm sorry, I see now. I haven't tested the analysis feature beyond making sure that it pops up on various devices. Thanks for the note, I will try to replicate the problem. <sonia91> We'll get to them soon. Did they come from the official site or from TWIC? <Karpov Poikovsky> Agreed, we've gotten caught up in Baku fever, meanwhile other major events are taking place. |
|
| Oct-01-15 | | sonia91: I've downloaded them from the official website: http://chengdu2015.fide.com/en/comp... |

 | | chessgames.com: The PGN was sort of difficult to work with (lots of [Date ""] games for some reason) but I think we've got it here: Women's World Team Championship (2015). |

| Oct-01-15 | | Knight13: <chessgames.com> What's the policy on controversial avatars? If I want to use an anti-feminist logo as my avatar, would that be permitted? |
|
| Oct-01-15 | | optimal play: <chessgames.com> Speaking of controversial avatars, I don't think using photos of famous real people should be allowed. Especially pictures of cultural icons such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bobby Fischer etc. Of course if members want to have a photo of a real person they should just use a picture of themselves. |
|
| Oct-01-15 | | Robed.Bishop: <optimal play: I don't think using photos of famous real people should be allowed.> Why not? And I don't ask in a confrontational way, I just want to know your reasoning. |
|
| Oct-01-15 | | optimal play: <Robed.Bishop> Using someone's face is quite personal. Whether it be someone who's still living, or even that of a deceased person, is something which I don't think just anybody has the right to appropriate. Especially so when you read some of the stuff adjacent to these iconic faces. A couple of these famous people I have admiration for, and to see some of the nonsense typed beside their image, as if to imply their endorsement, can be quite annoying. Even if I put those users on ignore, it doesn't change the fact that these images are still being used. Anyway, I'm sure <chessgames.com> would have certain faces prohibited, but I just think avatars should be abstract, like yours and mine. |

| Oct-02-15 | | sonia91: <chessgames.com> Thanks. Many games are missing, are their PGNs missing too from the official website or is the uploading still in progress? |
|
| Oct-02-15 | | Robed.Bishop: <optimal play> Thank you for your response. I agree with you regarding the living, and I would note that the dead do not care. Just to be clear, I am not objecting to your proposal and it is easy to find examples of your concerns within the site. |
|
| Oct-02-15 | | TheFocus: I just hope that no pirates will object to my avatar. |

| Oct-02-15 | | MarkFinan: Why has only my post been deleted?? I see 2 or 3 other people talking about the same thing yet you choose to delete mine! I aren't going to email you, I definitely aren't going to blow the whistle (pointless) again, in fact I aren't arsed delete this too, I'll deal with the <harrylime> by myself. I honestly am <trying> to behave! |

 | | chessgames.com: On controversial avatars:
First, <knight13>, we hate to restrict somebody's freedom of speech and association, and if this was truly a political site or an all-purpose discussion site we would be adamant about having a no-holds-barred policy. But it's about chess, so we try to balance people's pride in their associations with the possibility of creating strife. There's no litmus test, so the only thing you can do is ask for permission and then you're at the mercy of my somewhat stunted perception of how symbols may affect other people. Which you did, and I thank you for that. I don't even know what an "anti feminist" logo is, but I imagine somebody out there will next want a feminist logo, and soon there will be friction over social issues which is entirely avoidable. I hate to refuse a customer's well intended request, and I'm certainly not disparaging your beliefs, but I think in this case it's best to not create a conflict where there previously was none. Now, about <photographs>, for starters, I don't think photography per se has anything to do with it. If one takes exception to a member using a photo of Thomas Edison, they may just as well be opposed to another member using a painting of Isaac Newton. Likewise, a photograph of Carlsen by a user's name is not different in intention from employing a cartoon. So the question boils down to: is it appropriate to allow members to don a "mask" of a famous person, living or dead? We've never had a problem with it, provided the person in question is not particularly infamous. Not only do we allow, we encourage it, as we upload avatars of chess players and other eminent people all the time. I'm sorry if some people think that this is crossing some kind of line, but it's hard to imagine changing our policy on that after all this time, especially considering that nobody has expressed serious concerns over the practice until just recently. |

 | | tpstar: <nobody has expressed serious concerns over the practice until just recently> Welcome to the evolution of social media, where people just can't wait to show their outrage. Remember when that rogue cop tackled Bikini Girl? Thank you for banning the Confederate flag and thus ending racism. Hooray! Worry ye not. The Bad People are trying to curry favor with your favorite critic but he is strangely unmoved. Have a nice weekend. =) |
