| Jan-25-16 | | greed and death: Just out of curiosity, why does CG almost universally use the Chinese naming method (family name, then given name) for Chinese players except for Yifan Hou ? |

 | | WannaBe: <greed and death> It's just not (very well) unified. Tingjie Lei Shilan Liu
have the western way, where the family name is listed after given name. But I'd guess, about 85% of Chinese players are listed as Family name and then Given Name. |

| Jan-25-16 | | zanzibar: RE: Chinese names.
It would be interesting to hear from someone with such a name. My personal opinion is that we should follow FIDE, unless there is some compelling reason not to. Of course, conformance with FIDE has some advantages, since they set a worldwide standard. (Question- what do ChessBase and NIC do?) (insert <MissS> quote) The rationale is simple - presumably the player him/herself specific the name when making the application. Sometimes a Chinese national might emigrant to the US etc., and wish to use the Westernized name. The same applies for Spanish names, etc. as well (I remember commenting on such a case on <CG>). Perhaps, other times a Chinese national might wish to make it easier for Western players to know which name to address them informally by. As in, "When in Rome...", etc. We really simplify the process by following FIDE (again, exceptions allowed, with cause). |

 | | WannaBe: <Z> Here, I'll give you two examples: Ju Wenjun &

Wang Zili &
https://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml... |
|
| Jan-25-16 | | zanzibar: <WannaBe> yes, for those I would prefer <CG> to give the player names as Wenjun Ju
Zili Wang
in <CG>-style convention. This, is of course, just blindly following the FIDE convention. * * * * *
If you are wondering about my so called "collation convention"... It can store the names in both Westernized form or Chinese form. If Westernized, there's a "," in the name, otherwise, there isn't. Compare
<Ju, Wenjun> vs. <Ju Wenjun> The player's preference is easily accomodated, and sorting is correct for each style. |

| Jan-26-16 | | Alien Math: <zanzibar: RE: Chinese names. > Different nationality here, but when we were in Vietnam and encountered English speakers we sometimes accepted our names becoming <Westernized> for simplicity's sake, after moving to Alaska we had our names Westernized so officials/teachers/documents/medical wouldn't have to take the extra time to figure out what to call us |

 | | Tabanus: <CG> Looks like the games are in now, thanks. Btw while I'm in complaining mode, please add FRG West Germany to the hist. codes at bottom of FIDE Country Codes page! |

| Jan-26-16 | | zanzibar: <Alien Math> thank you for the post sharing a little your story. Just curious, do you have a FIDE card? |

 | | Peligroso Patzer: FWIW, the time control (TC) given today on the live game page does not conform to what is stated in the regulations for the event. The TC given on the live game page was: “Start game with 100 minutes. At move 50, add 15 minutes. Add 30s/move starting from move 1”; whereas the official regulations specify the following TC: “The time control is 100 min for 40 moves + 50 min for 20 moves + 15 min for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move 1.” Source: http://www.tatasteelchess.com/docs/... |

 | | Domdaniel: Re Tabanus: his English is excellent. Probably better than mine, and I'm allegedly a native speaker. |
|
| Jan-26-16 | | zanzibar: <Domdaniel> I agree his English is pretty darn good. But you haven't sat through a full-blown <OCF> editing session on the forum, I bet. Nobody can complain about the volume I generate in the Bistro when measured against that yardstick. (And please note - although I don't always agree with <OCF>'s edits, he's a true stickler in the best editing traditions. After the two of them get done, the document would pass muster even by the standards of my old English teacher (- and I still bear battle scars from my encounters with her.)) |

| Jan-26-16 | | TheFocus: <zanzibar> <the document would pass muster even by the standards of my old English teacher (- and I still bear battle scars from my encounters with her> Heck, mine has been dead over ten years and I still wake up in a sweat some nights knowing she was about to tear my work down. |
|
| Jan-26-16 | | zanzibar: <TheFocus> English teachers - the original terrorists. And for the record, ere I stand accused of faint praise, <Tab>'s writeups definitely need at least a cursory review before they should be adopted in an intro. He's good, but not that good. (Facts is facts). |
|
| Jan-26-16 | | Alien Math: <zanzibar> Have no FIDE card, in Vietnam we still retain last name then first name as stated, and westernized to first name then last name state side |
|
| Jan-26-16 | | zanzibar: OK <AM>, thanks for the reply. If you ever do get a FIDE card, let us know the convention you use! |

<CG> photo link here:
Le Thao Nguyen Pham (kibitz #6) Are we agreed that, at least until the grand scheme is implemented, this is a good way to communicate pictures? Rationale:
1) It's easier for me than writing an e-mail.
2) It allows interested users to immediately hop over to see the player, via the link. 3) If I also put notice link in <chessgames> forum for <CG>, it should be easy to update by hand, right? Again, I think having a major tournament like <Tata (2016)>, even if Group B, is a good excuse to spent 5 minutes or so updating a few select profiles by hand. After all, these players are more likely to get some traffic during the tournament play. |

| Jan-28-16 | | Caissanist: My apologies if this topic has been argued to death already, but is there a bug or something in the pulldown player menu? The selection of players seems pretty random. |

 | | Tabanus: <z> I don't, because I'm not going to use it for anything. The post is informative in itself, but does not lead to something concrete - an introduction, which the writer of would have to find own sources for anyway. I still wish you would write up a tournament, instead of being a butterfly! |

| Jan-28-16 | | morfishine: <CG> Why was my posting suspended for this post?: <<Hey <keypusher> you obnoxious doofus, you got nothing better to do than troll around and post how much you dislike other people's posts? People you don't even know? Who elected you <CG> Police Chief anyways?>> The fact of the matter is <keypusher> attacked me and it was completely unprovoked. He was responding to a sarcastic comment I made that wasn't even directed to him. And of course, I defended myself. Why hasn't he been suspended? He has a proven track record of indiscriminate bullying against anybody who's posts he doesn't like. A better example of random trolling and belligerent postings is impossible to find I don't attack other people at random like <keypusher>. But if him or anybody tries to push me around or tries to bully me, it should be expected that I will defend myself. And I do have him on 'ignore' |
