 | | Domdaniel: <Ajile> - < Chess is slowly and inexorably being solved by computers and will eventually die a slow death.> I agree that the debate on the monetization of chess is interesting, but I don't agree that chess will be 'solved' in the foreseeable future.
Engines will, of course, continue to outstrip any human performance - but this is still a long way way short of perfect play. |
|
| Mar-12-16 | | zanzibar: I suppose as long as egos can be broken chess will survive - even if it is shown to be a draw(*). (*) - If chess is "solved", is there any chance it will be a forced win for White? |
|
| Mar-12-16 | | zanzibar: Anyways, there's a definition needed. What constitutes the "death" of chess? People still enjoy playing with Rubik Cubes, and that's long been shown to be a solved problem. |

| Mar-12-16 | | zanzibar: <Who picks up the check?> <CG> question - somewhat of a small point, but I'd still like to hear an opinion on the matter. Consider the game:
C Golmayo vs Blackburne, 1891
<CG>'s PGN has move 40...d5 without the check. I have a program looking to compare game PGN's from different sources, so I flag such trivialities. What's curious, is the two PGN streams resynchronize before game end. So, <CG> gives move 62.f7+, which involves an extra check. Maybe, not getting the check the previous meal, <CG> felt obligated to pick it up this time? Does this stuff matter?
At one level, not really, as SCID and ChessBase seem not to care, though they care enough to internally alter the PGN to be correct for display to the user. On the other hand, I'd like the <CG> PGN to be strictly correct - it would be helpful when attempting to show correctness on a higher level not to worry about it at this level. And you how it goes, some people obsess over commas, I obsess over PGN. . |

| Mar-12-16 | | Alien Math: I have to agree with <Domdaniel> here ever since 1997 when Kasparov met Deep Blue people were morning the end of the game, notes from a page
"Far from destroying chess, the article suggested, Deep Blue and its successors enlivened the game. “That is always a good thing, publicity, good or bad,” Kwai Keong Chan, a chess player from Hong Kong, was quoted as saying. “Publicity is what you need.” " “A dolphin swims faster than Michael Phelps, but we still want to see how fast he can go,” “We’re humans and we care about other humans and what they can do.” http://www.newyorker.com/tech/eleme... |

Or, if you prefer a more visual approach to your wordsmithing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_E...
(I can recommend the former, but didn't get a chance to listen to all the latter, but how can you go wrong with such a word?) |

 | | AylerKupp: <chessgames.com> Since tomorrow is a rest day in the Candidates Tournament, is there any chance that you could cover live what could be the last game of the Women World Chess Championship match? |

 | | OhioChessFan: Not only did <AK> have a great suggestion, he kept it brief. That deserves to be rewarded. |
|
| Mar-13-16 | | WinKing: Wow! Only a four liner post.
That is a good suggestion <AK>. The ladies deserve a little air time. |

 | | AylerKupp: <OhioChessFan> Yes, I agree. And, BTW, that's two brief ones. |

Mar-14-16
 | | AylerKupp: <WinKing> I think that the ladies <always? deserve an equal amount of air time. And that's <three> brief ones! |
|

 | | AylerKupp: Of course, I'm not sure if I should get extra credit for 3 short posts that together have as many words as one long post. But I'll let you guys decide. |

| Mar-14-16 | | FairyPromotion: CG, today's GotD is currently linked to Nakamura vs Caruana, 2016, while I presume you mean't to put this game: Topalov vs Shirov, 1998. |

 | | chessgames.com: <FairyPromotion: CG, today's GotD is currently linked to Nakamura vs Caruana, 2016, while I presume you mean't to put this game: Topalov vs Shirov, 1998.> Right on both counts, I'm confused at how this happened but we've righted it now. |
|
Mar-14-16
 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge: It seems all new players have a 'Y' in the biography section, even if they don't have one.> Somebody is sifting through new players and adding, minimally, dates of birth and nations. That counts as a biography. |
|
Mar-14-16
 | | Stonehenge: I think I vaguely know that somebody :)
But this wasn't the case before. If only dates of birth and nations were added, the biography section would have an 'N'. |
|
Mar-14-16
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Yeah, something's changed; and it's an ugly change, since those non-existing biographies are displayed as unremovable empty lines. (Technically, they seem to be caused by rogue <p> tags, rather than actual empty lines or linebreaks.) The biography of Atticus Gr Halley is one example. Actually, every recently updated biography and tournament intro now begins and ends with an unremovable paragraph break; they don't look good anywhere, but they're particularly ugly in these non-bios. |
|
Mar-14-16
 | | chessgames.com: Oh, I know where those rogue <p> tags are coming from. Fix one thing, break another. But is there a problem with the Y's in that column? Did the old playerlist.txt actually behave differently? |
