Mar-29-16  Robert Samuels: The "new mobile look" on my iPad 2 means the games won't fit on the screen properly any more. Really annoying -- enough to stop me using the site.

chessgames.com: <The "new mobile look" on my iPad 2 means the games won't fit on the screen properly any more.> OK, there is obviously a problem with some platforms, we're going to roll back the change until we figure out what the issue is. Thanks for your input.

<I'm not computer literate but how long does it take to get a proper server up and running? AFAIK you have been working on this for almost a year now?> We've had the server since December but haven't had time to really work on it until recently.

The hard part will be the switchover. We might have to go offline for an hour (optimistically) or maybe several hours. A necessary step forward.

chessgames.com: <the games won't fit on the screen properly> We tested on an iPad 2 and found that they did not fit when you hold it in landscape position, but in portrait position it just fits perfectly. Are you saying that it did not fit either way?

We have to determine if this is actually a problem or if it's just a matter of preference, in which case we can literally make it a preference ala the Chessgames Preferences Page.

Mar-29-16  Robert Samuels: <chess games.com: we're going to roll back the change until we figure out what the issue is. Thanks for your input.> Yes, it's much better after the roll back. Many thanks. Hope the revisions do end up as improvements eventually.

Are you saying that it did not fit either way?> Yes, that's true, but the home page is much easier to read in landscape, and I don't want to keep rotating the iPad! Making it a preference would perhaps be a solution.

<CeeGee> sounds good. If the website has to go down for a few hours that doesn't sound so bad if it solves the lag problem once and for all.

WannaBe: I hardly use my iPad in landscape mode, the keyboard is just too wide for me to type on that.
Mar-29-16  morfishine: <mamoni> needs to be permanently banned

OhioChessFan: Can I suggest you allowing a handful of trusted members who'd have banning rights, even if just temporary until you had a final look? <morf> is correct and it disgusts me that filth remains until you get around to it.
Mar-29-16  WinKing: C'mon <chessgames> you can't leave that *highly offensive* rhetoric remain on your pages. You really do need someone with the authority to wipe that stuff clean when your not around. That has been sitting there now for many hours. I would think many here have blown the whistle yet nothing has been done.

<I hardly use my iPad in landscape mode, the keyboard is just too wide for me to type on that.>

Odd. I always use my iPad in landscape mode. It seems more "book-like".

Mar-29-16  morfishine: <OhioChessFan> & <Winking> I was in a rush at work so dropped a quick note from my Android here at chessgames.com forum instead of filling out 'Blow The Whistle' template. I noticed <Tiggler> soon after had 'Blown the Whistle'

A pity, this garbage is still there some 6 hrs after I saw it

Now everything is much better thanks for listen.
Mar-29-16  Tiggler: <chessgames> Please don't start deputizing vigilantes, as suggested by <OhioChessFan> and <WinKing>. I think the downside of that is worse than the original problem.

OhioChessFan: On a related note, could you gently request the Candidates page cease and desist with the Giri draw "jokes"? Sure, it is something to smile about, a little, but 20 pages of it in the midst of an important tournament page?
Mar-29-16  Tiggler: I think kibitzing is a peer-to-peer activity, so anyone who wants to be a censor should have to forfeit their own kibitzing privilege.
Mar-29-16  morfishine: <Tiggler: I think kibitzing is a peer-to-peer activity, so anyone who wants to be a censor should have to forfeit their own kibitzing privilege> I get your point, but you are wrong: The rules being enforced per "censor" as you put it, are explicit, simple and direct. There really isn't any "wiggle room" for argument IMO

*****

Mar-29-16  WinKing: The point is <Tiggler> I know you blew the whistle & I blew the whistle. Who knows how many other people did. Nothing has been done. What is the point of blowing the whistle when nothing gets done!
Mar-29-16  Tiggler: <morfishine> reporting to cg.com via the whistleblower link is not being a censor. It is reporting to the censor. Some here, above, have requested that "trusted users" be allowed to take action against another poster directly. That is objectionable.

Also objectionable is preaching to other posters who may, in your opinion, be violating the posting rules. In that case just use the provided whistleblower link.

Mar-29-16  morfishine: <Winking> Good point and sadly, the posts still remain (about 8 hours after I first noted them)
Mar-29-16  Tiggler: <WinKing> I think something has been done: the objectionable posting has ceased. Cleaning up the mess is time consuming, so we cannot expect it to happen as if you could wave a wand.
Mar-29-16  WinKing: Aw come on <Tiggler> it has been over 8 hrs. Does anybody work down there at <chessgames>? Should have been cleaned up already.
Mar-29-16  Tiggler: <WinKing> I agree that it should have, but the remedy you suggested, that other users could be authorized to wipe stuff they dislike, is a total disaster.
Mar-29-16  zanzibar: A better example of <"from the sublime to the ridiculous"> than <CG> I'd hard pressed to come up with.

But what the heck, every page that gets traffic ultimately degrades its S/N ratio.

That's life in the big <CG> circus of life.

Dumb jokes and dumb puns are the lingua franca of this place.
