<OCF: <All posts must be in English>
THAT wouldn't really work. Some people post large sections from say old German chess magazines.> <offramp> is correct. To install an English only rule would hamstring chess history work at cg.com. |

| Aug-01-16 | | zanzibar: I actually wish we had more Russian round these parts. And we'd miss the Annie K-bug perl script snippet too. Actually, there's a fairly well-moderated chess site with a fair amount of non-English posting - ChessTempo.com. I wonder how Richard handles it? I think he depends on volunteer moderators to a certain extent. (CT has a substantial Brazilian presence, likely due Alvaro's educational efforts). |

<zanzibar: I think he depends on <volunteer moderators> to a certain extent.> [Emphasis added.] And this is another suggestion I've made (and suspect others have made before me). It is unreasonable to expect one admin to moderate every forum on this site. It is also unreasonable (from a financial standpoint) to hire people (even at minimum wage) to moderate. But many other sites successfully use volunteer moderators (some of whom will probably know the languages that are creating difficulties for machine translation). This is not, of course, a perfect solution. Abuse of power is still a possibility, and inconsistent or erroneous enforcement of policies a certainty. However, it seems more likely to work out well <over time> than what we're doing now, which is plainly *not* working, as far as many members are concerned. ∞ |

<Hanh> sadly, you are indeed mistaken. The one Russian speaker I know of who did help here once in a while is that "Polar Bear" guy who runs, or ran the excellent "Chess in Translation" site in which he translated interviews with Russian masters, past and present. He wasn't around here often though. As far as regular members who read the Biographer's Bistro, I'm afraid it's not only Russian help that's absent. So are most of the most productive chess historians. They have left. By "productive" I mean editors who compose and publish new content, or correct old content. |

<Tab> was perhaps overburdened in this task. Although <Chessical> may eventually overtake him, given his slower, but more consistent, pace. Mabye we should channel follow-ups to the Bistro? |

| Aug-02-16 | | Robed.Bishop: I am not from Russia but I played a Russian once on t.v. |
|
| Aug-02-16 | | zanzibar: Thanks all.
The original remark was more along the lines of <JFQ>'s observation of presence (or lack thereof) of Russian at the Bistro. This includes both Russian literature as well as actual fun-loving Russians. It's difficult to navigate literature when one doesn't know the language, but that much hard when one barely knows the alphabet! It was a bit of an existential lament.
But I might take up the suggestions of help from <Annie K> and <WannaBe> it the need arises in the future. <Robed.Bishop> too, provided he also stayed at a Holiday Inn the night before. |

| Aug-03-16 | | Boomie: - Russian is obviously the biggest problem. I would also be curious about what is happening in China. Apparently their teaching methods are quite effective. Surely they have produced copious literature. |

I never really thought about how the Chinese are documenting the history being written as "we speak". I checked out this link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess...
I have to admit to being quite ignorant on the subject, as I didn't even previously know the role played by Dato Tan Chin Nam: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dato_...
(Or even that chess was banned during the first eight years of the Cultural Revolution) Anyways, I couldn't find any mention of a Chinese equivalent to 64 or Shakmatny or CL or the like. Perhaps all the Chinese literature is done on computers these days? Or what? |

 | | casaschi: Responding here to the chessgames.com comment about their dislike of the shortcut squares (the pgn4web terminology for what I think you call "hot squares") functionality of pgn4web. If you really dislike it so much is VERY EASY to disable it altogether, you only need one line of code in the JavaScript of the page. Please email me at pgn4web(at)casaschi.net if you need help implementing the change. With little more effort you could add a setting for each user to enable the feature back if they know about it and like it... I know I would! |

| Aug-05-16 | | TheFocus: <zanzibar> <So are most of the most productive chess historians. They have left.> <<You mean "He left".>> No, she meant "They." Before the denigration of previous historians' work, many of us put out enough work to put <Tabanus>'s efforts to shame. And <jessica> was one of those most productive historians. Not to mention Peter, craw, Phony, me, Karpova. Where are they now? Certainly not wasting their time and efforts here. And "they" all quit work here for a very simple reason. Or rather, a person caused them to quit. |
