chessgames.com: <Alien Math: interesting article about comments and numbers of those who comment http://www.npr.org/sections/ombudsm...> Very interesting read.

Some statistics about Chessgames:

• about 12% of premium members have kibitzed 75 times or more
• about 18% of premium members have kibitzed between 3-75 times.
• about 6% of premium members have kibitzed only 1 or 2 times.
• the remaining 65% of premium members have never kibitzed at all.

That's only counting people who are premium right now. I'm not trying to prove a point there, just curious what the statistics were.

(By the way, I formatted the above list with a new kibitzing trick I'm programming. Details to follow.)

Not intentionally — sometimes things just work out in unusual ways. So often it's frightening, in fact.

chessgames.com: OK, testing a new feature here.

The strongest players named <Fischer> in the database are, in order:

Robert James Fischer
Johann Fischer
Sebastian Fischer
Johannes Fischer
Johann Stefan Fischer

Do you see what just happened?

The old timers all know: CG kibitzing tends to group lines together and mosly-usually-kind-of ignores hard-linebreaks in the text. (It does this intentionally, for reasons that we'll not get into now.)

So that means that simple lists like the one above usually come out all jammed together, like this:

Robert James Fischer Johann Fischer Sebastian Fischer Johannes Fischer Johann Stefan Fischer

But I was able to get around that. So... what's the trick?

The trick is, if you want a hard-linebreak, you end your line with a backslash \ and then you're guaranteed to get a line break there. For example, if you type this:

1. Really important point\
2. Another really important point with a really verbose heading\
3. Fluff\
4. Closing statement\

It will render like this:

1. Really important point
2. Another really important point with a really verbose heading
3. Fluff
4. Closing statement

It works with URLs too, just tack the \ on the end of the URL like I did with the list of Fischers above.

This feature is in BETA and I am looking for instances where it might interfere with some other feature of the site, notably biographies and/or collection headings. If you see anything nutty let me know. Once I feel confident it's good I'll put it on our Kibitzing Tricks page.

Aug-25-16  zanzibar: We'll get there... eventually(*):

(*) In the German sense?

What happened to my blank line with the \ all by itself?!

chessgames.com: Oooops... that didn't last long.

I had to revert the code. It was not behaving. It broke the table[...]table feature unique to game collections and I have no explanation why. I'll have to study that issue before reintroducing this.

Sorry.

chessgames.com: What did you mean <What happened to my blank line with the \ all by itself?!>
Aug-25-16  zanzibar: <chessgames> Well, I would think, to be consistent a \ all by itself on a line would cause a blank line to appear in the post.

<1\ 2\ \ 4\ 5\> replace \ by \\n should show a blank line where 3 might otherwise appear...

1
2

4
5

Let's see... yep it worked. Not sure why the \ got appended to a previous line in my earlier post (i.e. the Niagara Falls one).

OMG, this is a great example of your second answer to me, namely:
