 | | WannaBe: <CG.com> According to the data/stat page: # of kibitzes in total: 3,759,666
I realize this number could be a little behind, since it's updated, and not a live number. Hence:
1. On average, how many kibitz are made in a day, now. Instead of an average (since) when CG.com first started? 2. I remember (very vaguely) some celebration/prize a few years ago, was it for 3M Kibitz? And if so, will there be prize for 4 millionth kibitz'r? |

 | | chessgames.com: <WannaBe> <# of kibitzes in total: 3,759,666> <I realize this number could be a little behind, since it's updated, and not a live number> It's recomputed every day around 4am. <1. On average, how many kibitz are made in a day, now> It varies on a number of things, especially if there is a big tournament going on. Roughly it goes from 400 to 2000, or maybe 3000 if it's something like a WCC. Sunday (our slowest day) clocked in at 515. <I remember (very vaguely) some celebration/prize a few years ago, was it for 3M Kibitz?> It was the 1 millionth. <And if so, will there be prize for 4 millionth kibitz'r?> I doubt it; if I recall people were just running around posting empty nothings, and the winner literally posted simply "Did I win?" It was fun for a few hours but not very productive. |

 | | HeMateMe: Hello Chessgames. I'm wondering why I am unable to sign out of the website? Lately, when I click the sign out tab, I might come back to the site an hour later and find out that I am still signed in. It's a security issue. |
|
Sep-20-16
 | | chessgames.com: <HeMateMe> Thanks for pointing that out, I'll try to figure out what the issue may be. |
|
Sep-20-16
 | | chessgames.com: OK, problem solved, it had to do with the policy of making people in "Quiet Mode" incapable of signing-out. For the time being that rule is disabled. It may be a dubious rule to begin with. The notion was that we didn't want a child placed in Child-Friendly mode to be able to accidentally switch it off; but there is only so much we can do. |

| Sep-20-16 | | gauer: <Puzzle submissions by chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #26017) / others>: Speaking of submissions of potential POTD (daily puzzle candidates), is User: Kev or some other reviewer a good place to submit ideas to? Also, does User: crafty still take the occasional stab at evals when a user asks about an unclear position? It would seem that if a position has a candidate move of an answer key that submitting the position/key to a gid page works better after (rather than before) a puzzle is given POTD consideration (maybe a slip with <other> ticked works, but that's not what it is designed for). Sorry if the question has been asked/answered previously. |

 | | chessgames.com: <what is the engine of choice> User: Kev uses Houdini to validate the daily puzzles. <Speaking of submissions of potential POTD (daily puzzle candidates), is User: Kev or some other reviewer a good place to submit ideas to?> Just email them to me at chess@chessgames.com. <Also, does User: crafty still take the occasional stab at evals when a user asks about an unclear position?> In a word, no. Boy I haven't read that forum in years. I think it's a great feature though; it just needs a more modern engine. |

 | | chessgames.com: Interestingly, it's been discussed that the very strongest engines like Houdini might actually have disadvantages when validating puzzles intended for humans to solve. Example: some puzzle lets White win a piece in a straightforward way, but there is kind of a flaw, a very clever complicated defense that reduces White's winnings to a mere pawn. (Computers specialize in wriggling out of trouble like that, you know?) But Houdini then continues to grind its gears, and sees 20 moves deeper than that, and in its cold wisdom sees a million variations all of which favor White, so it evaluates it as +2.58; i.e. just as good as if White won the piece. Now we have a strange animal: a puzzle intended for a Tuesday that has nuances that could elude titled players! On the other hand, if you give a puzzle to my old 1998 Pocket Chess Pal, and the evaluation rockets to +3 immediately, you can be 95% sure that's it's a good move. However, the other 5% of the time we sure look foolish. So which computer is really better for making such evaluations? The strong one, the weak one, or some kind of hybrid decision making process? |
|
| Sep-21-16 | | zanzibar: Today's POTD is another example of where deep calculation suggests a Zwisch that might not be obvious at first glance. (Or might be, as some players might instinctively utilize the free tempo to get the queen on the nice diagonal.) I wonder why <CT> doesn't have the position in its problem DB? http://chesstempo.com/gamedb/game/2... w - - 3 25 . |
