WannaBe: Cleared all my history in my browser, now I can access CG.com via name, instead of seeing that cute lady at the switchboard.

I'm gonna miss her.

chessgames.com: <WannaBe> Thanks for the info. For those who didn't catch it: you might be able to fix DNS issues by opening an MS-DOS window and type

ipconfig /flushdns

I'm glad it worked for you but also surprised that a simple reboot didn't force the same behavior.

For those still banging their heads on monitors, remember: it WILL fix itself without any action only your part. Some ISPs are really slow, some mobile devices try to save bandwidth by almost never updating DNS records, but nothing will cache an IP address forever.

I can measure the DNS propagation just by looking at the old server and compare its traffic to the new one. At first there were as many visitors getting the error message as were getting the new server, so that meant about half the world could get to CG and the other half was cut-off. But now the ratio is about 50 to 1. I'm sorry for those in that 2%, but just have patience, it will right itself.

<After a post, "return to forum or not" is not configurable in preferences? I did not a check box for that.> No, that's just the way it works now. It seems to be the overwhelming preference.

That page showing Bobby Fischer's hand scribbling the Game of the Century (http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag...) is now just an artifact.

chessgames.com: If you really miss that lady you can still peek at the upgrade page here: http://199.237.62.163/upgrade.html, at least for the time being. (We have plans to turn the old server into a slave-server that will run Stockfish and perform other high-CPU related chess functions.)

For those unfamiliar with computing history: that photo shows one very small portion of the gigantic ENAIC, widely regarded as the first digital computer, which was largely maintained and programmed by women who wanted to serve their country during wartime.

WannaBe: <CG.com> Pages seem to come up faster, was bandwidth also increased? Or was it just a server upgrade?

chessgames.com: Same bandwidth contract as always, but it's a faster server with more RAM. And also the version of MySQL was upgraded, and it boasts that it is more efficient in many ways. Perhaps most importantly I spent some time examining where CG wastes most of its database time and was able to make some significant speed-ups.

Once the DNS madness resolves itself I'll be looking to put that old server to new purposes. Stockfish + 5-man table base + 32GB RAM = a computer that could beat any human, living or dead.

Oct-10-16  Keyser Soze: Yes very fast on cellphone at least. Well done !
Oct-10-16  zanzibar: <Stockfish + 5-man table base + 32GB RAM = a computer that could beat any human, living or dead.>

What?! No 7-man Lomonosov tables?

http://tb7.chessok.com/newsline

Even my Android phone can do those... (that is, if I had an Android phone, or any phone for that matter).

chessgames.com: Does anybody have any problem regarding CVD after the upgrade on Sunday? In principle there should be no way that happens, but I received one email to that effect.

The only explanation I can think of is that they configured their java with our old IP address, but that seems farfetched.

Oct-10-16  zanzibar: <WannaBe> Ha!

And here's one in return...

If you can tell me what gizmo this is it might be worth a beer the next time you're in beantown (or vicinity).

Oct-10-16  zanzibar: Is anybody else getting a giddy feeling from those spinning blue spheres?
Oct-10-16  WinKing: The increase in speed is quite noticeable. Pages load almost instantaneously - very nice! Well done Daniel!

OhioChessFan: Thanks cg.c I am doing fine accessing the site. I said I was on a laptop when I meant to say I was on a desktop, hence the monitor smacking, as <Dom> mentioned. While my browser is IE, my ISP is AOL and as you suggested, they are very slow to update. Took a while but it's all good now.

Oct-12-16  Boomie: <WannaBe: Oh, weird, latest kibitzin and forum kibitzn shows nothing...>

Try using the <Earlier Kibitzing> button. That seems to fill a table somewhere. Occasionally the list doesn't fill the last page. Perhaps that could be tweaked.
