 | | OhioChessFan: I am going to have to test this. The back arrow works sometimes. Does it matter if I've typed in the kibitz box? Can I then hit preview and then the back arrow? Is it just a really slow process that would work every time if I was just patient? |

| Nov-15-16 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> Another suggestion... Would it be possible to add the Round # to the link text for these match games? E.g.
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/kibi... http://www.chessgames.com/perl/kibi... would be nice (and hopefully easy) to see:
<Karjakin vs Carlsen, 2016 (R4)> and <Karjakin vs Carlsen, 2016 (R2)> (Specially, in my profile kibitzing listing.)
Now, you might say these are the live games, and so are transient. But the official match games exhibit essentially the same lack of reference/round: Karjakin vs Carlsen, 2016 Karjakin vs Carlsen, 2016 Of course, we have the colors to guide us, leaving us with only 1/2 the uncertainly. How hard would it be to add the Round #? (Not very, I would think.) |

 | | WannaBe: I like the round number idea, maybe potentially it can be applied to other tournament game(s) as well. Came across a situation yesterday for 1959 candidates, Fischer/Tal game, having the game(s) marked with round helps. (Just don't mark them with odd numbers). |

 | | Annie K.: <Ohio> heh, no, I mean there is actually a 'Live Game' link in cg's top menu. If you don't see it there, you must have turned it off (deselected it) in your top menu preferences. Just turn it back on. :) |

 | | WannaBe: Got another 'suggestion', how about having Game and puzzle of the day linked to previous day? (e.g. when I go to Wiki and look up 1976 World Series, there's a link/arrow to 1977 or 1978 World Series, or how the men's Chess Championship series/pages work here...) If/when the day turns over, have a link to the future date? Would that be difficult? Example would be if a game's used twice for Puzzle of the day, and you'd have link it to different games... I know we have member(s) here that record Game/Puzzle of the day, but not all members or newbies know about that. Just a thought... |

 | | chessgames.com: About round numbers, e.g. <Karjakin vs Carlsen, 2016 (R4)> — I like the idea, but a bold preparation must be made: the round data must be added to the Game table. Right now it exists only as a PGN artifact along with other unsearchable fields like "Site". Perhaps this is one of the most long overdue changes; one might argue that it should have been that way since day #1. If we had round numbers available in the database as indexed fields, advantage would includes: • The ability to designate the round # in the link to the game as Zanz requested. • A type of pagination akin to what Wannabe just asked for with puzzles. Imagine you're looking at game #3 of the Carlsen-Karjakin WCC, and links appear something like <--round #3 round #4--> • A way to properly sort game lists where dates are unknown but round numbers are. • A way to properly sort blitz/rapid events where multiple games take place the same day. • Probably a dozen things I haven't thought of.
So to answer both Wannabe and Zanzibar, yes, pagination arrows are very important and there is a clearcut road from here to there. It will have to wait until post WCC, maybe post Holiday season, but it's a very valid suggestion. |

I apologize for not getting to them until today, however our tardiness does not warrant your making threats of bodily harm against other members. If he does it again, please use the Whistle function and we'll try to tend to it more rapidly. |

 | | FSR: I nominate today's Carlsen-Karjakin game for GOTD, under the title "First Blood." |
|
Nov-21-16
 | | chessgames.com: As GOTD for tomorrow, or just in general? Although unorthodox, perhaps as many as 80% of the people visiting CG tomorrow will be looking for that game, so perhaps it's a good idea. Speaking of visitors, according to Google analytics we broke an all-time record of the number of people on the site today, over 3500. The server held up admirably under stress. The last time we had ~3000 visitors the server had a meltdown and it was impossible the handle any more visitors if we wanted to. |

 | | WannaBe: Congrats on setting a new record on number of visitors!! My web page refreshed, and did not see any red 'X' where pieces should be on the board. =)) |

Glad you mentioned the visitors. I asked on the live game page, which might have prompted that. |

 | | offramp: <sea otter: <chessgames.com> why was one of my Nov. 10 music links deleted? ? What possible reason could you have? Seriously?> LOL. Do you really not know? The site is called chessgames.com! It's about CHESS. Posts about music are off topic. As a consolation, I believe there are sites on the internet that discuss music. Try a Google search for "music forum". |
