Dec-05-16 positionalgenius: <Jessica> Merry Christmas to you as well! I trust everything is going very well with you?

<Tab> Will this be incorporated as a page within CG?

chessgames.com: <WinKing> Thank you very much.

<Tabanus> Yes, players with "two first names" are tricky to search for. <But no search finds H Ruben.> Actually there is one way, but you'd have to know in advance that we had a record in the database with precisely that rendering. You can use E-Z Search: search "H Ruben".

<Domdaniel> Yes, get in shape, dust off your thinking cap. We're putting the finishing touches on it. (Truth be told, we're scrambling to get it done!)

Tabanus: <positionalgenius:> Huh? No I just noticed this while trying to find out who is "H Ruben". My main candidate: http://www.onlinearkivalier.dk/cid1....

<CG> Thanks. A longer hit list would be fine with me, but no big deal.

Dec-05-16 WinKing: I know everyone is busy down there but is there a chance we could open a forum for the London Chess Classic?

Tabanus: <CG> Earlier I could not see the 1/2 signs in the crosstable of Albin - Marco (1901), but now they are always Ok (or so it seems), except that the edit field has & frac 12; (without spaces) instead of 1/2.

On Schlechter - Janowski (1902), I can see the 1/2 signs sometimes (incl. in the edit field) after several times refreshing the page, or after using the <- and -> arrows. Else there is only a "

On Smyslov - Hübner Candidates Quarterfinal (1983), I cannot see the 1/2 signs at all. They are replaced with a " (incl. in the edit field).

On Frankfurt (1887), I cannot see the 1/2 signs at all. They are replaced with a ", and with & # 733; (without spaces) in the edit field.

Whether all have this problem, or only some, or only me.

chessgames.com: <Tab> OK, now we're getting somewhere. You see, like yourself, I see only ˝ marks ("double accent acute", they call it) on Frankfurt (1887). The way it's coded I would imagine everybody here sees them as well.

But I know it used to work OK, so I went to the edit history to locate precisely where it stopped working. I found this edit:

Edit History: Frankfurt (1887)

It pretty clearly shows you converting the ½ marks into ˝ marks, somehow.

It would be fairly easy for me to replace those ˝ codes with the symbol for the half (which you can write as ½) by writing a little find-and-replace routine, but the real question is, how did it get like this?

I only have two ideas offhand:

<1> Do you ever use an odd browser while you're editing, like maybe some sort of web plugin on your Facebook app, or something like that? If so, then I could imagine something like this happening. It probably looks fine in the weird browser but broken everywhere else.

<2> Do you ever do work outside of your browser, e.g. copy the text to a notepad editor, email client, etc., and then later paste it back into the field? If you do that, you run the risk of your editor changing some glyphs to something nonstandard. Again, it might look perfect in Word but turns into ˝ marks back on the web.

If I think of anything else, I'll ask here or at the Bistro.

Tabanus: <CG> Gotta go, but Hmm no I'm not that advanced. I'm just using Chrome on Windows 7 Enterprise (at work), and Chrome and IE on Windoes 10 (at home). I have definitely <not> had Frankfurt 1887 in Word or anywhere else. <shows you converting the ½ marks into ˝ marks, somehow> Yes it looks like I did, but how it happened I have no idea.

Tabanus: Jeez. So my comp., while I'm editing, is converting the 1/2 marks into * marks, so that everybody only see * marks?

Not good for my already bad reputation, is it.

Tabanus: Now here at home (With IE on Win 10), copying your text and pasting it in, it reads:

¨ö marks into ¢© marks.

Tabanus: Hmmm. Our computer here at home is indeed old: Dell Optiplex 745. It was bought in a used shop, and had Spanish settings which the seller then somehow made into English.

Guess what. I'll replace it with a newer.

<Different topic: <CG> problems?<<>>>

Does anybody else have a problem with caching?

E.g. I see a new comment in the kibitz listing, click the link and get an old page listing?

In other words, the new post is missing.

It's easily remedied by doing a refresh on the page, and then a <More> link shows up (that is, if the new post does already show up).

The <More> button is missing until the extra refresh step, in case you were wondering.

It might be my setup, but it's a behavior I've not seen before. And my first hunch is that <CG> has changed something.

(I'll have to do a full reboot to really put my setup in the clear).

* * * * *

I reposted, but I'm differently seeing weird behavior getting <CG> to synch up with my new posts - definitely new behavior to me.

Dec-07-16 zanzibar: I canceled my cancellation.

When I post or delete a post, and select <return to forum> I should see the updated forum?

I mean, the new post should either be there, or have been deleted, right?

chessgames.com: <Tabanus> Your computer's quirks won't impugn your reputation, don't worry. Most of us would be pariah if that were the case.

<Chrome on Windows 7 Enterprise (at work), and Chrome and IE on Windows 10 (at home)> Chrome is supposed to be pretty a solid browser, although I don't use it much personally. I might experiment with using it to edit some tournaments and see if there is a Chrome quirk that causes these things.

<Zan> It's very hard for me to follow what you are saying. Could you retell the story and give links to example pages?

Traditionally, cache problems almost always end up being the fault of some machine outside of Chessgames which is caching the pages against your will. It could be at an ISP level or even on the machine you use. Not even understanding your problem, a quick test would be to see if you can replicate it on a totally different device.

chessgames.com: Another thought: if you use CG via mobile devices, some mobile carriers are notorious for over-caching even when the websites go out of their way to prevent it. It's much cheaper for AT&T or Verison to send you a stale copy of the page you are requesting than to actually fetch the data through 4G, and so they do it every chance they get.
Dec-08-16 zanzibar: <chessgames> whatever this behavior's cause, it's new as of today.

Here's a run down

1) I do a <Profile> listing to see if you posted a reply

2) No, there's no bronze star to my reply.

3) I do a <refresh> (with the refresh button!), because I've wised up to the bad behavior. Ah, now there is a star showing your reply.

Note - this strongly suggests the problem is at <CG>, since I use the <CG> refresh button for the update.

4) I click on the link in the profile listing to go to the forum, and the last posting I see is mine.

5) Again, I know that can't be, so this time do a browser refresh. Now your posts show up.

Is this an adequate description?

Have you make any behind-the-scenes updates that might cause such behavior very recently?

Dec-08-16 zanzibar: <chessgames> Note that after I posted, my <profile> listing shows a star due to being behind.

Then I do a refresh and the star goes away (because I've just posted - so noone has had time to reply just yet).

Note that I'm typing this in, seeing your new reply about mobile devices - yet my latest reply is missing (since I didn't do a refresh just yet).

For the record - I'm on a laptop at the moment. (Much easier typing on these things vs. mobiles!)

Dec-08-16 zanzibar: The links might not be too useful, given this is a transient effect, and the page is meant for me.

My profile: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

From there find the link to chessgames forum.

Of course, there's also weirdness using the kibitz listing:

Recent Kibitzing Page

See if it is properly synched after you make a post.

Dec-08-16 zanzibar: <chessgames> before you investigate, let me switch to mozilla (from chrome) and see if the behavior is the same.

It's just that I'm lazy, and have become very use to working with chrome.

Of course, if you did make a recent change...

Tabanus: <CG> Post in Bistro says <Chessical: I prepared Frankfurt (1887) using "Word" where all the <½> appeared correctly.> Perhaps this is the reason. I have probably copied the 1/2 signs from his collections several times. Which makes me think CG could perhaps make some "uncontaminated" symbols for copying: the 1/2 sign, dollar sign, pound sign, etc.

See for example Frankfurt page, what is Ł ? The pound sign I suppose. And in the edit field the 1/2 sign is now & # 189; (without spaces) - such tables are almost impossible to edit (and the edit field cannot be enlarged on my old screen at home). Ideally I'd like to see just "1/2" also in the edit field.

I will go through some TI events to see if there are more cases. I could put in new 1/2's as well, if I knew they are "safe".

Tabanus: <CG> Of the New Tournaments added by member nomination, I went through the whole list and found the 1/2's replaced by * in the following:

Capablanca Memorial (Elite) (2002)
Schlechter - Janowski (1902)
Smyslov - Hübner Candidates Quarterfinal (1983)
Taxco Interzonal (1985)
Toluca Interzonal (1982)
Grünfeld - Tartakower (1922)
Hastings (1980/81)
Spassky - Portisch Candidates Semifinal (1977).

chessgames.com: <Note - this strongly suggests the problem is at <CG>, since I use the <CG> refresh button for the update.> I don't follow. If your browser was set to "load pages once per session" it would behave exactly as you describe.

<Is this an adequate description?> It's a fine description. I'm going to try it myself but I am pretty sure it won't behave that way. At least I hope so.

<Have you make any behind-the-scenes updates that might cause such behavior very recently?> Not VERY recently, but when the server changed 100 things changed. Could this have been happening since then, and nobody noticed until now?

<When I post or delete a post, and select <return to forum> I should see the updated forum?> Of course, you should always see the updated forum, sometimes parts of the page are 'stale' (like the header of player pages) but the kibitzing area should always be 100% up-to-date.

OhioChessFan: I use AOL as my ISP and IE as my browser. I too am having cache problems this week. Wednesday, the homepage came up as Monday's. I didn't notice until I clicked on the puzzle of the day and realized it was a one star. Today, I signed on and the home page didn't have the London Chess Classic link, so it was at least as old as before you set that up.
Dec-08-16 zanzibar: <<chessgames> I don't follow. If your browser was set to "load pages once per session" it would behave exactly as you describe.>

This thought occurred to me too, yesterday. But I wasn't too sure, and was rushing at the time.

Let's say that I agree with all your points as a working proposition then.

I'm on Firefox right now, and have also deleted all of Chrome's cache data. So let's see if the errant behavior has been brandished.

PS- I really did only just notice the weirdness only yesterday, which is fairly long after the <CG> switch-over. That, and the fact nobody else seems to be affected tends to point to my setup (which is fairly static - although Firefox did an update since I haven't run it for a while).
