  chessgames.com: Congratulations Richard, that's great.

I just checked, and the site still doesn't seem to have the PGN. If we can't get our hands on PGN soon, feel free to email me your personal games.

Jan-20-17  User not found: Hi Daniel.. All your emails are going into spam folders because every few months you send email in bulk. I just replied to that email so if you'd check your own emails please.

Thank you webmaster :)

<cg.com>: As you know, I generally disapprove of sockpuppets.

Nonetheless, I'd like to know if there'd be any objection to my creating one for a specific purpose.

<Big Pawn> says he would like to debate <objective moral values>, but as it stands, he would use my past agreement with his position to claim "victory."

If, however, I carry on the debate under a pseudonym, that possibility is ruled out, and an actual debate becomes possible.

Are there any objections to this?

<OhioChessFan: Why not let it be a user default option? Click here for desktop view, click there for mobile view.>

Typically, the way it works is that the site identifies the user agent (browser) and renders the correct version for it by means of <conditional declarations>.

This means, among other things, that when it recognizes a user agent as associated with a PC, you see one version of the site, and when it recognizes one as associated with a mobile device, you get the other.

chessgames.com: <OhioChessFan: Why not let it be a user default option? Click here for desktop view, click there for mobile view.> Your Preferences Page has an option "Disable mobile features (even on mobile devices)" so that you can override mobile versions of pages. This is becoming more and more important as we are converting several pages to mobile-friendly versions right now. Our game collections, game pages, player pages, and live broadcast pages are all now set to "viewport=350" for very thin and long-scrolling experiences.

However the decision to drop the ECO from the new Kibitzing table went beyond the mobile concerns; it was just a space-filling column anyhow that we didn't think that many people were using. In the early days of CG we put a lot of "filler" around so that things didn't look so empty.

I still think that's true. On the other hand, perhaps ECO pages would be more useful if they had a "recent discussion" section.

chessgames.com: Kev was in charge at that time so I can't really say, but we've been fighting off some really obnoxious spammers lately. They are registering accounts like this one, dozens at a time: User: Ayitossnup.

Or it could have been the traffic, or a combination.

chessgames.com: I'm tempted to put a captcha type question in the login that says "What is 2+3?" or "What color is snow?" or "What is the opposite of 'down'?"

The problem is, as easy as those questions are, if you don't speak English they aren't easy at all. Chessgames has a large silent group that never posts but figures out how to use the features through common sense. I'd hate to lock such members out.

Meanwhile the spammers are doing something that tips their hand. I won't say what it is, in case the walls have ears here.

chessgames.com: <Abdel Irada> Our rule with sockpuppets is that they are OK as long as you don't have some malicious or improper purpose, such as evading a probation, cheating on one of our contests, or just being generally annoying on purpose.

It sounds to me that your motives are innocent enough, so do as you please.

Jan-21-17  gauer: Relating to chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #26678) (and login/logout issues), When a <user profile> has their "Member since Jun-28-09 · Last seen Jan-30-15" information showing, and decides to sign out at (just) their (own) login/logout page, is it possible to display a list of devices or ip addresses that <user profile> may have been signed in at, and to in some cases clear old devices or ip addresses?

Or does it in some cases take a few hours or days for the "last seen" info to display?! I'm not sure on one of my older drives from a few years ago (that failed) whether I would've retained any sort of login cookie or whatever on such a device. Google sometimes seems to employ a security question type of device when it sees a mobile login versus the occasional public computer login/logout on some of their pages, making note to employ private browsing and a cache / history flush.

I'm not sure how long any cookie would survive if the site could tell that a deviceID hadn't visited in say, a week - and maybe offer the <user profile> an option to ask/tell him to sign back in, regardless of the device? Then again, I'm not sure how sophisticated the login process is designed to be...

The first four rounds of games that are available are now in the upload queue.

Jan-22-17  Benzol: Rounds 5 to 9 are a bit more problematical with the PGN having symbols like %C1k in the mix.

WannaBe: <CG.com> It happened again, bunch of duplicate games from today's Tata Tournament. =(
Jan-22-17  GreenLantern: Right. Rapport - Carlsen listed 7 times.
Jan-23-17  morfishine: <CG> I find it almost laughable that you would suspend my posting for 24-hours saying I had to "BE NICE".

Give me a break, if that standard was applied evenly and effectively, then half the posters here would be sidelined indefinitely.

For example, that condescending poster <keypusher> seems to think he has acquired some measure of "ownership" here at <CG> constantly attacking me over time with multiple expletives, yet I guess that doesn't qualify as "Not Nice"

Explain that one

Jan-23-17  Boomie: <OhioChessFan: Wow, <chrisowen> is massively spamming this place.>

It should be obvious to everyone by now that <chrisowen> is using a bot to produce his gibberish. If that isn't against the rules, it should be.

OhioChessFan: Per <chrisowen> the quality of his posts has dropped dramatically. The lack of verbs makes it much more like the pure gibberish people used to incorrectly claim. I used to think of it as genius. Now it's sort of meh. As for my comment, that was in reference to the profile at User: Ayitossnup which has a definite chrisowenish vibe.

chessgames.com: <I used to think of it as genius. Now it's sort of meh.> I've never understood a bit of it, personally, but I know people used to find humor in it on some level.

There are other indications that he might use a bot.

I think what I'll do and is put him on probation and force him to write me to at least explain what he is doing. If he claims it's some kind of abstract ongoing art form then I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If I never hear back the we can assume Russian hackers took over his account to send coded missives overseas.

chessgames.com: morfishine: Shut up, nobody cares what you have to say.

(Note: the above is not a statement to morfishine—I would never speak that way to anybody—that was a paraphrase of the "not nice" post in question.)

Several months ago we were having a discussion about infractions here and I made a metaphor of how one can speed across the highways in Florida and usually get away with it — chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #25533).

To place it in context, I was responding to the oft-cited complaint (which one member bemoaned with almost pneumatic regularity) "You don't even enforce your own rules!"

I bring this up because morfishine's comment of "uneven and ineffective" somewhat resembles that complaint. I believe some people misinterpreted my highway-metaphor and I never bothered to clarify. I'll clarify now.

My point with the speeding metaphor was this: If you speed on Florida highways, you don't get a ticket each and every time your speedometer goes over 70 mph. However, this doesn't mean that Florida doesn't enforce its speed laws; anybody living here knows it does so quite well.

You might say Florida enforces its laws "UNEVENLY and EFFECTIVELY" — just like it should be. Nearly every driver tends to obey the law, not because a violation is met with certain and swift punishment, but just because it creates a liability which can easily be avoided.

To be "even and effective" we'd have to read every single post and weigh it on the basis of rudeness, whether its on-topic, and multiple other concerns. That's never going to happen. But if we take an occasional post and hold it up to the light, we hope to make all members consider what they are typing when they post.

If you think there is a specific member who is going unpunished feel free to report them.

I hope that addresses the bone of contention here.

chessgames.com: <There are other indications that he might use a bot.>

Specifically, two years ago when we were making the Holiday Present Hunt, I had software that would find words that had specific properties (letters in just the right places). Such words tend to be "exotic" — for example ERSTWHILE, CLABBER, or SPHENOID.

For some reason I was using Search Kibitzing to locate these words in kibitzing. I found that nearly every single legitimate word was found somewhere in CG, but the more exotic the word, the more likely that the only person to ever have used it was Chris Owen.

To me, this is an indication of randomly generated word streams; in other words, linguistic white-noise. I sent him an email. I don't want to punish him—as he's a classic case of "if you don't like it, use ignore"—but if he really is just splattering white-noise all over our database, it's got to stop.
