Apr-14-17  zanzibar: Well, I'll say one thing that's wrong with the bio page from my viewpoint right up front -

It's far too long. One shouldn't have to scroll through all that content to get to the gamelist.

So, from my viewpoint, the tournament record should go on a separate page - a feature that <CG> doesn't currently provide.

In fact, beyond a minimalist boiler-plate intro for each player ("Just the facts maam"), the same should go for extensive written elaborations, if they exist, on any given player.

Of course, that's my own iconoclastic view on these matters.

.

Apr-14-17  zanzibar: <chessalem> if you followed the dynamics on the Bistro, you'd realize that <Tiggler> is quite earnest in such an opinion.

<OCF> is an established contributor in the <CG> universe, on several levels.

It's a little ludicrous to have to make such a false choice, as picking either <OCF> or <So>.

But <CG> probably did make a mistake green-lighting So as an editor without getting advance "buy-in" from the Bistro crowd.

There are several considerations well worthy of discussion - which should have come in advance.

.

Apr-14-17  chessalem: < green-lighting So as an editor>

CG is now taking it back. This is just not acceptable when dealing with Wesley. Maybe CG has underestimated him . I advise CG to listen to his interviews and re assess his intelligence...You just can not give the kid a lollipop and attempt to get it back after he licked it.

Apr-14-17  Tiggler: <zanzibar> I seldom visit the Bistro, but <OCF> is ubiquitous on this site and well-respected everywhere he posts, except perhaps on Rogoff, where respect is not part of the equation.

I did not mean to create a false choice between <OCF> and <So>, however. One can enjoy and appreciate the participation of both. But I do not come to CG.com to read what Wesley has to say, about himself or anybody else.

Apr-14-17  chessalem: a kid would throw it at the ground than give it back...and Wesley is not a kid anymore...He is the current US chess champion and the MVP in the Pro Chess League and plays chess like it was Stockfish making the moves ....Does CG really expect Wesley to just drop it as easy as it thinks?
Apr-14-17  chessalem: <But I do not come to CG.com to read what Wesley has to say, about himself or anybody else.>

and you would read what a chess fan in Ohio has to say instead? What's his rating anywaw? Can he even play good chess?

Wow....what a displaced sense of priority.

Apr-14-17  chessalem: <without getting advance "buy-in" from the Bistro crowd.>

ah yes...I remember the pharisees...

They will bring the fate of the true chess messiah to be decided by Pontius Pilate..

and by now ...we all know who is the true chess messiah...

Who is pontius pilate?

saffuna: <CG is now taking it back. This is just not acceptable when dealing with Wesley. >

Chessgames hinted they they expected him to revise the bio, not throw the whole thing out and post a new one.

Apr-14-17  chessalem: <not throw the whole thing out and post a new one.>

This is what Wesley said:

< Wesley So: Please do not update my bio without asking me first because I have hired someone to do that. It was outdated and messy to read daw. Let me know of any thing you want to put and I will give it to him.>

He was planning to update it and not throw the whole thing out.

And your acting as if this is a very bad thing. Wesley is in fact doing this with good intention in hand.

This is in fact just in pursuant of his duly right as an editor vested upon him by CG.

CG should have apprised him of the fine print if there was a limitation in his editorial function. Obviously he was not...It's reminiscent of his game forfeiture with Akopian ...he has no idea that writing inspirational notes is against the guideline...Now, he was told editing his player page is allowed…only to be told later on that doing the same to his bio was prohibited and he has to take back his move. Who is to blame for this ruckus? You tell me.

Apr-14-17  Alien Math: The reactions to the autobiographic page of So is an interesting view of the community and one i support, mainly this part < The page should be honest and accurate, and omitting parts of a player's career that the player doesn't like goes against being accurate.>

From what I understand, he already threw the old bio out. 100%.

Maybe I'm wrong. Can anybody confirm?

chessgames.com: I exchanged a quick email with Wesley who was on-the-go, so it wasn't very in depth, but I tried to explain to him the situation that has emerged and politely explained that he overstepped his editor privilege.

He enlighten me that there were at least some statements that he claims are demonstrably false. So not everything removed was shameful censorship, although I believe there was a baby tossed out amongst the bathwater.

Let's just remain calm and we'll get through this.

Apr-14-17  Tiggler: One solution would be just to delete the whole lot and just provide a link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wesle...

It might not be perfect, but it is better than what we have now.

The Pontius Pilate solution.

Richard Taylor: I feel that the chess bios in general are rather boring...I tried to liven W. So's up with my imaginative account of some brilliance I must say (modestly) of So in his early years prowling the back streets of some dark mysterious city in the Philipines desperately seeking someone to play chess with...for it it these details, not the truth, that matter: the truth is relative, that he is US Champion seems true but more interesting are his personal views, aberrations, and much else which usually accompanies the "information" about the great and famous....I think we should ignore facts and have great psycho bios...For US$200,000 I could write a wonderful Imagi-Bio of So or anyone else who has a page...But I would prefer to defame, if defame I have to, those who are dead.

(So might concur as it would help to build the legend leading up to his battle with .... forget his name...the current World Champion.)

After all, Trump, the great US Leader, makes things up so why shouldn't we?

WannaBe: The Engine Ply? Nice, more information to confuse me when I have to decide between W/B/D and what engine's ply says...

=))

Apr-15-17  chessalem: <From what I understand, he already threw the old bio out. 100%.

Maybe I'm wrong. Can anybody confirm?>

You are wrong. Take a look at his bio at the Wesley So page. It was a revision of the old one.

The clear difference is that it is clearly an improved version because it is more concise yet complete, accurate, reliable and comprehensible.

<More concise yet complete>

Please note that his personal circumstance and the highlights of his career were presented as one sentence paragraphs for brevity. His tournament history is presented via an enumeration format that is chronologically arranged and definitely easier to view.

< The page should be honest and accurate, and omitting parts of a player's career that the player doesn't like goes against being accurate.>

What's not accurate about Wesley's depiction of the days of his life? Kindly point them out.

<he overstepped his editor privilege. >

this bio revision pales in comparison to the power of banning a kibitzer you empowered him to do in his player page.

< shameful censorship >

You gave him the power of outright banishment. That's equivalent to the taking of life ...censorship is but an infliction of a minor physical injury.

<Let's just remain calm and we'll get through this.>

Wesley has made his position clear. He will not budge from it even if an angry mob calls for his ouster. It was your undoing from the very start - the day democracy died in the Wesley So page was the day the zombies prowl the street at night...Now, ask yourself this question, who let the zombies out?

Apr-15-17  virginmind: Hi <cg.com>, no coverage of Kortchnoi Zurich Challenge, started 3 days ago? Featuring Kramnik, Nakamura, Anand and others...
Apr-15-17  zanzibar: <<chessgames> Wesleygate aside for a moment, has anybody noticed the recent change with the Opening Explorer? What do you think?>

What? Can I move the pieces on the board now?

That would be great!

!

Apr-15-17  zanzibar: <chessgames> Maybe you mean the Engine Analysis feature?

The one where I get:

<Sorry, analysis is not yet available.>

After these few moves:

<1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 d6 5.O-O Bg4 6.h3 h5>

offramp: I would like to complain about various acts of evallity and trolliness that may or may not have taken place against other poster OR POSTERS. These have occurred at various dates over the past years, or not. I have sent private emails to those either concerned or not but I have or have not received any reply. The enormities normally take place on the Rogoff page.

Hence the old English poem:
<If you accidentally land on Kenneth S Rogoff,
Go back one page, then log off.>

chessgames.com: <Maybe you mean the Engine Analysis feature?> Of course I do; you see, the "old" Chessgames server that was replaced last year is now a Stockfish slave and can give us evaluations on tap.

The way that this works is that each position in the Opening Explorer has an "engine button" that may or may not have an eval next to it, depending on whether we've done an engine eval of the position.

I am running a program right now to go through the most frequently seen positions and evaluate them, so if you start from the beginning you'll see evals until you get down deep into the opening.

For the time being, only admin can request an evaluation. Once I'm convinced it works, and I take care of some technical concerns, any premium member will be able to request an eval, either "normal", "extensive", or "deep." Once the evaluation is made it is stored with the position so that future users need not consult the computer to read the results.
