Check It Out: Speaking of which, only one week to go until the most exciting matchup in recent memory!! Quit your jobs, leave your gals, diss your mates, it’s time to sequester yourselves in to a ball of chess!

Sorry, off-topic. Um, go chessgames.com!

Richard Taylor: <Check It Out: <Richard Taylor> Your off-topic justifications are out of place here and better suited on your own forum or the Rogoff page.>

But the Rogoff page is not the place. I think you know that my comments are a response to the on topic subject of Rogoff and other places on here: their desirability. I am not justifying or defending anything I have said.

It is all said. But it is the Rogoff people and Big Pawn and his band of right wing White Supremacists who are attacking me in a rear guard action.

They fail as those who know me understand what I said had a lot of relevance...

mabe you've have already updated the database and included the newer games into ..... it must a very hard thing to do, considering all the transpositions possibilities, ths have a great day

3.No personal attacks against other members.>

Hmm, would that include this:

<Richard Taylor:

... it is the Rogoff people and Big Pawn and his band of right wing White Supremacists who are attacking me...>

This is THE default tactic of Cultural Marxists like <RT>. They NEVER have a cogent argument based on reasoning and facts. It is ALL personal attacks. They seek do dehumanize their debate opponents, so they can pretend that they don't need reasoning and facts to force their "culture" upon others.

Violation of posting guideline #3 is alive and well on chessgames.com, by <RT>, <DWOB>, and <zanzibar>

Nov-04-18  sonia91: Today the strong round-robin <Shenzhen Masters> started in Shenzhen, China with Ding Liren, Anish Giri, MVL, Yu Yangyi, Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Nikita Vitiugov; they are all 2700+ (Ding is 2800+).

This tournament is running for the second year, last year's event cg.com page: Shenzhen Masters (2017)

Nov-04-18  Boomie: <Shenzhen Masters>

Curiously, Chessbase has also spaced it out. However it is on the Bomb:

All draws today.

HeMateMe: The news is that Eric Schiller has died, and way too young, at age 63. I think he once had a photo icon/avatar here, did a little posting. Perhaps a few words could be spoken on the home page or in the K Café?
Nov-05-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: I spoke to Eric once or twice, I think it was just after he'd had his arms (legs?) amputated. He seemed like a really nice bloke. RIP Mr Schiller.

Susan Freeman: I have a couple of his books somewhere. Can't find anything since I moved, and that was 3 years ago. :)
Nov-08-18  Boomie: <Chessgames.com>

I've stumbled on an oddity. CG has come up with a new spelling for Lagno - Kateryna Alexandrovna Lahno. Everybody else has her listed as Lagno, including FIDE. Kateryna Alexandrovna Lahno. If you do a search on "Lagno", you get no hits! Sadly, all her games are also listed under Lahno.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Boomie> That is not particularly odd; the transliteration of her surname changed from Lahno to Lagno when she switched from Ukraine to Russia.

(Although Russian and Ukrainian names can be different even in Cyrillic, in this case the Cyrillic spelling of her surname remained the same; it's just that Russian and Ukrainian follow different transliteration rules.)

Richard Taylor: Eric Schiller has died? I knew he had been ill. My condolences. I had a book by him on defense (and of course counter attack) in chess which was very good.

His games are good: sometimes quite amazing. RIP.

Nov-08-18  zanzibar: <Boomie>

Here's a source on transliteration rules, comparing Russian vs. Ukrainian:

http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca/~tar...

The character causing the trouble here is Г.

Катери́на Олекса́ндрівна Лагно́ (Ukrainian wiki page: https://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9...)

Екатери́на Алекса́ндровна Лагно́ (Russian wiki page: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9...)

From here Lahno days... https://en.chessbase.com/thumb/34840

I think <CG> should follow <FIDE> (and <Wiki>) unless there's a compelling reason not to. In this case we would be following common usage in the literature.

* * * * *

Dealing with a player who goes by various names through their chess career is a common problem. <CG> should definitely allow searches on old names to lead to new names.

In fact, this is an area where <CG> could do better than other databases - by using the contemporaneous name in the PGN to match the name actually used in tournaments. Given that a <CG> id is always there, matching the player is never ambiguous. Thus, player stats would always be accurate.

The player bio would clearly mark all names used by a player, with (hopefully) accurate dating of the usage (which actually might allow overlap). I think the Cyrillic names should also be there, or the Chinese names, or whatever native language - to help biographers searching original literature, etc.

Of course, a user flag would allow PGN downloads to use the the contemporary (i.e. current) name for the player in all games, if so desired.

Nov-09-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Anyone else having trouble kibitzing on the live game?? I've tried 3 times now and the kibitz button isn't working!

I'm going back to the Rogoff page, lol :)

Nov-09-18  optimal play: <Dr Winston OBoogie: Anyone else having trouble kibitzing on the live game?? I've tried 3 times now and the kibitz button isn't working!> No.

Nobody else had any trouble at all kibitzing on the live game.

I made a number of interesting posts on the live game without any problem at all.

You were probably on the wrong page or something equally stupid.
