Like this: <(1)>display text<(1)> (1) = 'a href="url"' (2) = '/a' On <CT> (chesstempo) there's a similar syntax (from <Simple Machines> last I looked), but it allows the parser to review/check it. If OK, it just inserts/translates your input into HTML. It's better, because you map into HTML and can control the formatting. Aside- this is why it's so easy to get tables lined up on <CT>, it has a verbatim mode that just maps into the HTML <pre></pre> format. Daniel, otoh, believed in doing a lot of auto-magic (e.g. FEN, CN notes, links, etc.). You, as user, don't get to control the parsing at all - you have to trust his auto-magic detection algorithms. I don't really mind that (ok, it's not my preference), but he didn't allow for explicit user control via escape tags (or markups).
