MissScarlett: The top of the page Aleksandra Goryachkina is distorted by the extended length of the photo credit. Is there a way to rectify this?
Dec-04-22  stone free or die: <Missy> sure, replace the url by a real link, with a brief textual description that fits.

MissScarlett: What form does a <real link> take?
Dec-04-22  stone free or die: Links are (usually, almost always) clickable - yours is not.

<Z> We're looking into all the 403 errors

Dec-04-22  stone free or die: By asking <pete> or <steve> maybe.

(See the auto-magic discussion below - normally it's automatic on <CG>)

Do you know HTML? There it's done with anchors.

Like this:

<(1)>display text<(1)>

(1) = 'a href="url"'
(2) = '/a'

On <CT> (chesstempo) there's a similar syntax (from <Simple Machines> last I looked), but it allows the parser to review/check it. If OK, it just inserts/translates your input into HTML. It's better, because you map into HTML and can control the formatting.

Aside- this is why it's so easy to get tables lined up on <CT>, it has a verbatim mode that just maps into the HTML <pre></pre> format.

Daniel, otoh, believed in doing a lot of auto-magic (e.g. FEN, CN notes, links, etc.). You, as user, don't get to control the parsing at all - you have to trust his auto-magic detection algorithms.

I don't really mind that (ok, it's not my preference), but he didn't allow for explicit user control via escape tags (or markups).

I doubt this makes sense to too many, but it was topical, and I think the verbatim mode is sorely needed - and not just by biographers.

Ha- in trying to post the above I error-ed out with:

<ERROR:
HTML is not permitted in posts.
Please note that you can create hyperlinks simply by pasting URLs.>

How ironic! (I tweaked it with the (1) and (2) crap - which just makes the post harder to read - ah, <CG>!) .

Like <Z> said above. It has to be in html format.

Dec-06-22  stone free or die: Can we please have a tournament page for the on-going <3e Elllobregat Open (2022)>?

I was wrong that there isn't a PGN download feature on the games page - it's the little cloud icon, 4th from left under the moves:

https://www.elllobregat.com/chess/

Niemann is currently tied for the lead, and it looks like there's more than a few good games being played.

Side note- beware the tag headers, they need to be properly normalized.

After updating <“jammy"> to <"jammy">, we don't get the <403> anymore.
It's definitely a bug we have to resolve, but in the meantime you can try to replace the curly quotation marks(aka smart quotes) with the straight quotation marks while we figure it out

Dec-07-22  stone free or die: Just curious, but was it intended to mix quotes in

<“jammy">

vs.

<“jammy”>?

Being more of a programming than a writer at heart, I'd be happy to eliminate 'em (i.e. smart quotes).

MissScarlett: The Site for games from El Llobregat Open Chess (2022) should be <Barcelona ESP>. The Country Code list: Chessgames Country Codes
Dec-07-22  stone free or die: RE: <Barcelona ESP> [sic] tag:

No, this tournament is not in Barcelona (the city) ESP.

It is in the province of Barcelona (Catalonia ESP), but we do <City (or town) Country> here at <CG>.

And for this tournament the city is <Sant Boi de Llobregat>,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sant_...

as was used on the original PGN.

* * * * *

As much (or as little) as I respect <Missy>, these matters really should be broached over on the <Bistro>, allowing for proper feedback before changes get made to <CG> willy-nilly.

No one person should have such direct input san review (remember, people are downloading the PGN at any given moment, and care should be given for stability)

I saw chess website putting near Barcelona so I googled the address and got:
Carrer Mallorca, 30, 08830 Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain

So I went with Barcelona. Should it be Sant Boi de Llobregat?

BTW, how would you, <fredthebear> and <perfidious> like a two week Christmas vacation?
