 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi> OK what I posted there doesn't make any sense, I just realized. I'll get back to you when I figure out exactly what I wanted to say. If I ever do, that is.
Is it our move or your move?
Our game has turned epic-- |
|
| Aug-12-07 | | Dr. Siggy: <jessicafischerqueen>: All right: don't worry! Mind you, my nickname is taken out of another doctor: hop to my profile and check out whom I'm talking about. "I'll be back" (with a very strong Austrian accent)!... |
|
Aug-13-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ah <Tarrasch>.
Was he really a <doctor>? |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | JoeWms: Dom's bio was a fine piece of work. Thank you, Jess. |

Aug-13-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: No worries <Joe>, very flattering to garner kudos from you. It was time for a <tribute> to our <fearless leader>. You are a <stringent critic> with very exacting standards. |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | Ed Trice: The French considered anyone with a Law Degree to be a Doctor, whether they had a PhD or not. |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | Ed Trice: <MyriadChoices> I like Oscar Wild's remark even more: "To lose one parent, that is unfortunate. To lose both parents, well, that's just plain carelessness." |
|
Aug-13-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ah the <Impotence of Fleeing Ernest>. Very funny, <Dr. Tarrasch>! |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | Eyal: In the original context of the play it's even funnier, because it's part of an ongoing word-play with "lost"/"found" through the dialogue: Lady Bracknell: Now to minor matters. Are your parents living? Jack: I have lost both my parents.
Lady Bracknell: To lose one parent, Mr. Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness. Who was your father? He was evidently a man of some wealth. Was he born in what the Radical papers call the purple of commerce, or did he rise from the ranks of the aristocracy? Jack: I am afraid I really don't know. The fact is, Lady Bracknell, I said I had lost my parents. It would be nearer the truth to say that my parents seem to have lost me... I don't actually know who I am by birth. I was... well, I was found. Lady Bracknell: Found!
Jack: The late Mr. Thomas Cardew, an old gentleman of a very charitable and kindly disposition, found me, and gave me the name of Worthing, because he happened to have a first-class ticket for Worthing in his pocket at the time. Worthing is a place in Sussex. It is a seaside resort. Lady Bracknell: Where did the charitable gentleman who had a first-class ticket for this seaside resort find you? Jack: [Gravely] In a hand-bag.
Lady Bracknell: A hand-bag?
Jack: [Very seriously] Yes, Lady Bracknell. I was in a hand-bag—a somewhat large, black leather hand-bag, with handles to it—an ordinary hand-bag in fact. |

| Aug-13-07 | | achieve: <Eyal> Yes, I checked the original context and therefor withdrew my post in reaction to <Ed Trice>. <To lose one parent, Mr. Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.> Quite a different tone And context to the quotes prior to your post. Never mind, tastes differ for various reasons.. |

| Aug-13-07 | | WBP: <Jess> Been without phone service for two days, so that means no computer. It turns out that the computer and phone lines are at war (even when the computer is totally shut off), and that only by unplugging one can I get the other to work. Too bad we can't do that with warring people, states, etc. There's a kind of Twilight Zone aspect about this, which is kind of creepy (most of the time my life is more like an episode of F-Troop).
Things are getting close, no? When exactly are you going? <Ed>, have you posted anywhere the solution to the murdered man puzzle yet? I'm quite curious. |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | WBP: P.S. Great bio of <Dom>! |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | Zebra: <Jess> No, I'm in Germany. But I'm pretty sure there are ferry boats from Japan to Korea (also to Russia). I nearly worked there once, may do so again. Good luck with the teaching job. I hope you have a great time. |

| Aug-13-07 | | chessmoron: <Went to Playas de Rosarito and specifically Califia in Baja California. Saw the border gates and saddened about a story that they die of dehydration after they walked miles after miles. Funny that they throw rocks at the detecting gates.
Dos Equis--ads everywhere.
After going out of the Mexico-US border...we headed to San Diego (my home university) and went to Coronado and went to the famous Hotel del Coronado where Charles Lindbergh, Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Willie Mays, Magic Johnson, Muhammad Ali, Taft, Roosevelt (FDR), Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton and First Lady Laura Bush visits. Met a cute 3 year old Taiwanese baby. So adorable. I sat next to the nanny and the baby. He was the main attraction of the bus trip to Baja California. He sleeps a lot. Lazy baby. All the females laughed at what he said. 2 Mexicans (driver and co-tour guide/translator) picked him up and walk him down the stairs of the bus at the end of the trip and we all said goodbye.> Sitting and awaiting an response and not even one post from you anywhere. Our mutual relationship is over. Goodbye <jess>. |

| Aug-13-07 | | JoeWms: <Jess: what is the car?> Cara mio, it is a Segway. (How's <that> for a segue?) Personal: I'd love to have a Segway to around with: Too expensive for my HMO. But I might get a little scooter next year, though. |
|
Aug-13-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Joe> good grief sometimes you're as cryptic as <Master Domo>. Ok I know what a <segue> is. I know what <cara mio> means (MY CAR!) Heh.
But what is a <Segway>? I refuse to GOOGLE as I'm still "on strike." Is it one of those horrific thingies people "drive" on the sidewalks? I think I saw them on TV.
However, they DO look like fun.
If I had one I'd terrorize passersby and fruit vendors. |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | Ed Trice: <WBP> Do you think people are ready for the solution to the murdered man puzzle? If so, I'll post the solution. |
|
Aug-13-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Ed> you might want to consider <cutting it out now> if you have any desire to be tolerated by the <CG.com> regulars. I have made several suggestions for you in <DomDaniel's forum>. I suggest you follow them.

|
| Aug-13-07 | | Ed Trice: The solution to the "punster's escape" is posted in my forum, which was just opened today. |
|
| Aug-13-07 | | Boomie: Howdy fellow Civil War buff. Stonewall Jackson was perhaps the most enigmatic man of his times. The only general I can think of who emobodies some of his qualities and flaws was Patton. The difference is Jackson wouldn't have slapped that soldier. He would have shot him on the spot. Although Jackson fought to preserve slavery, he treated his own slaves with kindness. He taught them to read, which was against the law in his state. When Lee heard of Jackson's injury he said "General Jackson has lost his left arm but I have lost my right." Endless speculation abounds about what would have happened had Jackson (and Johnson at Shiloh) lived. One can only say that the war would have certainly been prolonged. Jackson's final words are a poetic description of his religious character embarking into the great unknown. "Let's cross the river and rest in the shade of the trees." |
