Mar-04-09  madlydeeply: I've never seen The Return of Doctor X.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the Maltese Falcon but it didn't stick with me like Beat The Devil (i was 19 at a party with lovely ladies that actually SPOKE to me when i saw it!!) and I've seen The Treasure of the Sierra Madre a number of times as it was the favorite movie of my dear ol' dad.

And i've read it a number of times B Traven was quite the writer exploring greed and exploitation of the working classes in Mexico and on a GHOST SHIP...

also I learned something from GHOST SHIP...namely our international passport system was put into place after WWI and everybody had a year and a half or so to do declare their country of citizenship...there were a number of sailors who were "asea" during the whole period and consequently became "stateless"....they couldn't ever disembark and from their ships and settle anywhere because port police would track them down and throw them back on their ships...

OOh B Traven is such a trip you are so lucky if you haven't read his stuff yet!

Of course you probably have its probably "old news" for ya.

We need the "edge" in here <blacksburg> because we are fierce chessplayers who live or die on the board.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Crawfish 85>:

I'm assuming you are White.

Ok first, well done-- I don't think any illegal advice is going to affect the position you posted.

I'm pretty sure you could use a <random move generator> here and still win by force.

OK which brings me to the anger I feel looking at that FEN-- and why I really think Correspondence Chess can really showcase the <chessplaying WHACKO> to best effect.

Ok forget about the MASSIVE INSULT to you that Black is playing on in this position.

What about the TOTAL LOSS OF PERSONAL DIGNITY to himself?

I had a similar experience when I beat <jrobichess> twice in a double round robin tournament I played on <letsplaychess.com>.

Ok It was unrated and all, and I'm not in the habit of putting someone down because they are a lower playing strength than me.

But he played on literally for months after I had taken almost all of his pieces off the board. Like he was five years old. Hence my point about -- doesn't he have any dignity?

????

You can make a case for playing on in a lost Correspondence position if you are trying to learn how to play the best moves in an endgame or something- technique training- that I can understand.

But his moves through the whole game looked like he spent about six seconds on each one.

And, of course, that's what he was doing.

He plays maybe 40+ games at the same time, and since our tournament was unrated, why should he give a crap what he plays or what happens to him?

And this is a guy who has posted hundreds of <instructional chess videos> on youtube, which would make a cat laugh.

Ok I love your FEN because you are my friend and you are crushing him like a bug-- which is always fun to see.

But I cannot look at that FEN without wanting to slap your opponent and ask him WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING???

WHAT IS BLACK DOING HERE???

CASE CLOSED

BTW, if you are playing the Black pieces here, my humblest apologies.

There- see? Even typing in the phrase-

"BTW if you are playing the black pieces..." is an insult to you. That's how morbidly laughable that position is.

So apologies for typing it.

CASE OPEN, unfortunately.

jessicafischerqueen: Ok there are a buncha posts in here -- some game scores and weblinks I need some time to take a look at--

So <friends> please be patient as I am busy making lesson plans etc. as the new semester has just started.

However, I will be <chessing> all weekend and will be looking at all the posts in here and responding shortly.

CASE OPEN

Mar-05-09  crawfb5: Struggling to find resources in a <losing> position is painful. <Winning> is nice work if you can get it. I never got all that worked up over opponents who didn't know when to say when. As you noted, those games almost play themselves. I sometimes use them as training exercises, looking for mating nets or the most efficient or elegant win.

When I won his Queen for a Bishop, I suspected I had "an advantage," but those connected passers on the 7th just make me laugh. Thought it might give you a chuckle.

<in best Bill Paxton voice> GAME OVER, dude. :-)

"an advantage"

heh....

Yes, it's certainly less vexing than to be slowly squeezed to death for eight weeks by <Kingscrusher>.

Correspondence just drives me nuts because I can't get the position out of my head.

And if I make a blunder, I might have to wait days to see if he even noticed.

So I only play one at a time now.

I been training against my computer and feeling really stupid.

But that great article <howard> posted--

I'm hoping this is "good stupid"--

Yes- the "fear" part was spot on I think.

If you remember my EMU, it fits well with one of my <wild unsubstantiated suppositions>.

I look forward to more EMU information on the topic you said was very dangerous.

I'm very curious.

Did you mean <anteaters>?

They can be quite dangerous.

Now <Magnus Winsen> has a chance to take or share first spot.

BTW, notice that <Drawssily Drawchuk> is also within striking range after <11>!! Draws.

You know, <Ivanchuk> is such an immensely talented and unpredictable player.

He may go down as the most fabulously talented chessplayer never to win the World Championship since <Kortschnoi>.

I love his games and I love him.

<Chuck E. Cheese> brings immense warmth, personality, and breathtaking courage to the game of chess.

Mar-06-09  achieve: <Jess> I found an amazingly interesting article (PDF) on RJ Fischer's escapades surrounding his US Jr title in 1957--- It's a fantastic based-on-eyewitnesses account.

Do you have it already? Else I will look it up.
