Nov-28-11 | | Travis Bickle: <jessicafischerqueen: This just in, Bobby Fischer number one all time.> In 2001 Fischers peers & top GM's voted for the greatest chess player of all time and selected Bobby Fischer, when did this latest tally occur? |

Nov-28-11 | | Travis Bickle: Toward the end of this video clip is Victor Korchnoi talking about that 2001 vote. http://youtu.be/z3k8o4B-tJI |

Nov-28-11 | | hangingenprise: jess, robert e lee was born and died in virgina. he was a big proponent of
state rights, which is why when virgina went with the south he went also. graduating second in his class from west point, he actually thought that he failed his state by not graduating first in his class. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <hangingenprise> yes, and in fact <Lincoln> offered <Lee> command of the Union Army just before the Civil War began, which Lee declined for the reason you give, and also because he couldn't see a way to refuse command of the Confederate army in Virginia, his home state, without losing honor. He was not, however, a die hard fan of seccession by any means. Once he started his command of the Army of Northern Virginia, however, he fought it out long past the time he might have resigned in good conscience. Source: "The Civil War" by Ken Burns

Nov-29-11 | | Boomie: <...he couldn't see a way to refuse command of the Confederate army in Virginia, his home state, without losing honor.> Much has been made of the honor of the traitor Bobby Lee. Consider this. At the outset, Lee was the commandant of West Point. As one of the highest ranking members of the U. S. Army, he had taken an oath to defend the Constitution. There was no honor in his decision to fight for the South. I am a little tired of the Ken Burns's of the world perpetuating this crap about Lee's honor. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> I'm guessing you were supporting the Yankees. QUESTION: Do you think southern writer <Shelby Foote> was too generous in his assessment of the south during the Civil War? He is given star billing in the film, no other authority is given anywhere near as much screen time as him. |
|
Nov-29-11 | | Thanh Phan: Have found the comments of reason, honor, loyalty and traitors to be of interest as that conflict had a "brother against brother" situation - those talks were reserved for another class that included political discussions Most of what are learned was the day to day nước type moves - rate of march, movement to contact, unit positions when contact was made and training, communication and leadership of various units Comparable hospital, munitions, food and supply were the last of the diatribes we had notes about the American Civil War. Our 3 week course was still interesting |

QUESTION: Do you think southern writer <Shelby Foote> was too generous in his assessment of the south during the Civil War? You can't get more Northern than that unless you count Alaska which I don't. But really I was just "spoiling for a fight" as they said back then. My tone was confrontational and I suspect that I will be pilloried here shortly. However I do believe in what I said about Lee. His actions caused untold death and suffering. Had he honored his oath, the war would have been over in a year or two. The choice of Foote was excellent. Not only his encyclopedic knowledge but his beautiful Southern accent was a perfect fit. |

Nov-29-11 | | Boomie: <Thanh Phan>
I am astonished that the American Civil War is studied anywhere but in the U.S. and in military academies. Almost every nation has had a civil war or two although few with such unbridled savagery. I'm not sure how much can be learned about the U.S. today from a study of the Civil War. Most of the issues left over have been settled. I wouldn't say the Civil War has much relavence to the modern U.S. However it will probably always remain of interest to military historians and buffs like us. |
|
Nov-29-11 | | Thanh Phan: <Boomie> Was a 3 week course in The World's Historical Conflicts, spent more time at the range, first aid and fitness programmes then study of The American Civil War For first or second age firearms, they had Military-Grade Colleges, extensive if some times bulky supply trains and high rate of enlistment compared to the rest of the population at that time Some times wonder of the Mail-System then, a week to a couple months before mail is received |

Nov-29-11 | | playground player: <Esteemed colleagues> Technically, every officer who took up arms for the Confederacy was in violation of his oath. Then again, every American who took up arms against King George III was also a traitor, by law. But where was the Constitutional warrant for compelling states, by force of arms, to remain in the Union? The tragedy of the American Civil War--maybe it's the tragedy of every civil war--is that it never should have come to that. There was pride and pig-headedness on both sides. And the wounds are not yet fully healed. |

Nov-29-11 | | Boomie: <Thanh Phan: Some times wonder of the Mail-System then, a week to a couple months before mail is received.> Ben Franklin organized the mail system initially. Mail between New York and Philadelphia took about 3 days to deliver. That's how long it takes today. Before the railroad, the population was mostly in the Northeast. So a letter rarely had to travel more than 200 miles. By the mid 1800's the rail net connected just about everywhere. Getting mail from the Northeast to New Orleans could take a week or so. Sometimes the mail was sent on river boats to port cities. In any case, it didn't take more than a week to deliver the mail. In the first large battle of the Civil War, the South brought about 10,000 troops from the Shenandoah Valley to the battlefield by train. This was the first use of trains to move troops. Amazingly, they were able to move this army about 50 miles in a few hours. It arrived in time to help rout the Union army. |
|
Nov-29-11 | | Thanh Phan: Letters from units had a single stationary place to send mail - for mail to reach an individual in one of the armies they sometimes were in chase mode until the mail caught up with the unit Rest of the mail I think were more at your explanation |
|
Nov-29-11 | | Thanh Phan: That was how they described to us, thank you <Boomie> for clarifying more about that |

 | | harrylime: Hmmmmm ! lol
'A drunkard ( Grant) being led by a lunatic ( Sherman) ' was published in a newspaer back then .. End of. Grant drank.. And Sherman had a brakdown.
It's a contemporary quote and it makes me laugh !From a newspaper published at the time Grant was staring down on Vicksburg, and things were not looking good for the union cause. But sure, if it offends you please delete again.. I discovered this quote whilst reading about Shermans' life ( fascinating) 3 or 4 months ago.. Did you know he climbed the sugar loaf mountain in Rio whilst on his way to San Fran ? lol Jess I was actually watching and slowly going thru a film by Ken Burns on the American civil war and I come across it on your forum lol .. You accused me of having Zero knowlege on it lol ..
This is where communication in forums like this becomes limited. Lets just say I have some knowledge of the American civil war |

 | | harrylime: Troops brewed their own liquor.. on the confederate side this involved marinated raw meat lol .. Bet on anything which moved.. including racing lice.. One man who ALWAYS backed the right lice in these races was eventually found out... He was 'warming' the plate .. lol Played baseball (both sides) .. Boxed.. played music and listened to many songs.. Music was a big factor in the AM civil war. Songs were banned which undermined morale.. Songs boosted morale.. Men missed their women.. missed their homes.. music softened this alienation. In the siege of Atlanta the troops would stop and listen to a man playing a musical instrument ( not sure which off the top of my head) ,, and an un official cease fire would exist.. I've much more to say but am boring myself lol ..
Back to chess.. |

I'm all better now. 1st day was cursing the world, the next six were bliss when I realized I only had one job to do all week, watch tv and eat. Best time off ever, no exercise no travelling no house work, and less people around. |
