Nov-30-11  Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen: Aha! I'm off squab, this year's holiday recipes are all about squid.>

I understand that squid have become a fashion statement in Korea. The appearance of squid hats in small fishing villages aparked a run on cephalopod haberdasheries.

jessicafischerqueen: <Harry> those are two phat posts on the Civil War, sorry to have been so thick about your first one. I didn't know about the context behind your post.

I tried to copy and paste your first game into my Chess interface, but it won't copy- I think you have to follow the format of the PGN text to get it to copy and paste properly.

I'm not entering in individual moves. Here's an example of a PGN text that will copy and paste:

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Ba5 6. b4 cxd4 7. Qg4 Ne7 8. bxa5 dxc3 9. Qxg7 Rg8 10. Qxh7 Nbc6 11. Nf3 Qc7 12. Bb5 Bd7 13. O-O O-O-O 14. Bg5 Nxe5 15. Nxe5 Bxb5 16. Nxf7 Bxf1 17. Nxd8 Rxg5 18. Nxe6 Rxg2+ 19. Kh1 Qe5 20. Rxf1 Qxe6 21. Kxg2 Qg4+ 1/2-1/2

jessicafischerqueen: <Wayne> great story on that Indie Canadian chess film. Available on pre-order for only 15 bucks- I don't like to pre-order, but as soon as it's in stock I'm certainly snapping that up.

Here is the site to order the film from:

Without youtube an amateur would find zero audience for home-made chess documentary films.

Domdaniel: <Jess> The 90-minute documentary by Liz Garbus, <Bobby Fischer - Madman and Genius>, is currently being shown on BBC4 -- http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01...

Anyone in the UK can watch it anytime online for the next ten days, but the site blocks furriners such as we. Sigh. Bloody Beeb. Still being Auntie, even with satellite channels.

They showed it last night -- here's a review: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-ra... -- and, if I'm reading their schedules right, they're repeating it at some ungodly hour later today or tomorrow.

*That* I might be able to catch, if my current cable package includes BBC4. It may do, but I've really no idea -- I ignore the device, as a rule. It's set up to show nice old-ladies-and-kids channels, should an Aged Parent or a niece/nephew require one. But I don't actually *watch* TV.

Still, for Fischer in the wee small hours an exception may be made.

Speaking of, you got any plans to sell your skills as a documentarist to Hollywood? Or even the BBC?

I want to be able to say "I interviewed Mel Gibson sober, I got stuck in an elevator with a claustrophobic Paul Schrader, I got a death-ray scientology glare from Tom Cruise for flirting with Nicole Kidman, and I made dick jokes at a gents' urinal while standing between Billy Zane and Matthew Modine ... but nothing compares to the time Jess and I fought in the limerick wars ..."

BTW, the person who first introduced me to Flann O'Brien's work ("You haven't read At Swim-two-birds? You *have* to read it ...") has recently shown up right here on CG. And he's an IM.

Life is passing strange.

jessicafischerqueen: <Switch> that's perfect, thanks as always for your selections.

Not only did <Spielmann> win <Magdeburg 1927> sole first, the game also belies the conventional wisdom that he'd given up his "Swasbuckling" style by this point in his career.

He never gave it up entirely. It's more accurate to say that he added a deft positional approach to his arsenal, or that he succeeded in adopting a more "universal style" by the late 20s.

Added to the collection.

jessicafischerqueen: <McLovin> that's you eh? As tempted as I am by the Monkey Ranker, I just don't have time at the moment to commit to a day-to-day prediction contest.

They are excellent contests though.

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> you can watch the <Lizzie Borden> film free any time on the internet. Do you want me to post the link for you, or email it for security purposes?

She and HBO are indeed protecting the copyright, however, and the BBC is likely just following orders, much like <Josef Goebbels>. Some kind of colonial licensing fee not paid and such.

To be fair, her film is excellent and I hope she makes lots of money from it.

You'll notice it's not been posted on youtube, they've got a weather eye on that film.

However, I did "road test" clips and they've not been taken down from my top secret sock accounts- the "auto copyright" on youtube files generally won't pick up short segments from the interior of video or music files.

You can also slightly alter the frame rate to confuse the "auto copyright detector."

To avoid human eyes, you just have to give the file and uploaded version a new name and not mention the war in the tags.

I'm not intending to rip off any of <Liz's> film myself, but I will in fact be using some of her footage of Bobby scenes that have already been published on youtube.

Her versions have been remastered and converted to the 16:9 format and they look fabulous. She was able to do this by getting hold of the original footage and hiring actually competent people to remaster it.

With regard to me being even noticed by any film makers or companies, I'd just as soon stay under the radar for now.

That said, I'd like to point out that the "editing" of the Russian chess documentaries I have on my hard drive are so poorly done it's almost beyond comprehension. A trained monkey could do a better editing job with the free software that comes bundled in every Windows OP dating back to XP.

<Liz Garbus>, on the other hand, used professional editors with professional equipment. The editing on her film is first rate. I've watched her movie a dozen times at least already.

I'm guessing he didn't grow up in <Shepard's Bush>.

tpstar: <Spielmann> What a great romantic!

These three are notable games:

Spielmann vs R Wahle, 1926

Spielmann vs M Walter, 1928

Spielmann vs H Gebhardt, 1926

These two are nice:

Spielmann vs M Elyashov, 1903

Spielmann vs J Moeller, 1920

This one has a cute major piece finish plus annotations by Lasker:

Duras vs Spielmann, 1909

jessicafischerqueen: Just to let everyone know, I'm making a <Spielmann> collection as a study aid for a documentary I'm making about him.

So I'm looking for games of historical significance as well as brilliance- wins against strong players, wins at key moments during important tournaments, games that have historical significance in terms of theory (such as the "Westphalia variation" games I have in the collection already), and so on.

Game Collection: Spielmann: Last Knight of the King's Gambit

Dec-01-11  Thanh Phan: <jessicafischerqueen> Think it's a bit more then just "editing" of the Russian chess documentaries,

It is the way the narration, video and pictures fit well with the music and games as a whole, that makes it compelling

Dec-01-11  Thanh Phan: Vishy Anand: I found Bobby Fischer surprisingly normal and calm http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/201...
