Dec-07-11 | | benjinathan: Hey Jess- my kid is doing a science project with a guy who came from s. korea in september. the friend gifted us a giant box ok korean pears. They are each the size of watermelons- can you suggest what to do with them|? |
|
Dec-07-11 | | hms123: <benjinathan> You could drop them out the window and watch them go <splat> on the sidewalk. That's always fun. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <benji> those are the notorious "bae" or "apple pears" as we call them in Vancouver. They originate from China, although we grow them in Korea in hothouses. protip- the inside should be as crisp as an apple.
fun fact- the "bae" is over 100% water! |

< I notice you've decided to hire <Neville Chamberlain> to monitor your site for you.> heh |
|
Dec-07-11 | | benjinathan: <You could drop them out the window and watch them go <splat> on the sidewalk.> They come individually wrapped in their own foam rubber jacket just to prevent that. Perhaps I will invite the neighbourhood over for a bae eating party |

Dec-07-11 | | Travis Bickle: Hi Jess! With your expertise can you help my pal boz? He asked on the kibutzer Cafe about how to access documentary films. I figure you're the director to ask! ; P Here's a few of my favorite songs by John Denver, who I think was a true artist. Poems Prayers & Promises

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <tbonesteaks> thanks for that John Denver! Did you know he used to be neighbors with Hunter S Thompson in Boulder Colorado? He used to phone in noise complaints to the police because Hunter kept firing rifles off in the ravine. You gave me "Eagle and the Hawk" before, great song but too short at just over 2 minutes. He could have made that one a lot longer. That wasn't his "stee" though. |

Dec-08-11 | | Travis Bickle: Jess thanks for helping my pal boz! ; P
Here's 2 great songs by Neil Young from his Freedom album. The 1st song has a sad & infectious melody, to me thats perfection! The 2nd song is about redemption through love. I hope you enjoy! Wrecking Ball - Neil Young

He said he wanted to do a Motown record & he did just that. http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/go... Also you have to check out a great movie called 'Love & Other Drugs' starring Jake Gyllenhaal & Anne Hathaway. |

Dec-08-11 | | Boomie: <Jessie>
I'm in Retro heaven. The original Mission Impossible is on. Not that CGI crap with that poofta Tom Cruise. Barbara Bain and Martin Landau in their cups was just too cool to bear. RetroBoom at the Boobie again... |
|
Dec-08-11 | | Boomie: ->
The giant pear of Korea, Cohones Maximus, is rarely eaten in polite society. I believe this taboo derives from the doctor's advice "Nil Bae Mouth". However the bae is used as a glaze for baked squid. |
|
Dec-08-11 | | benjinathan: The pears have been moved from the box to the fridge. There they sit all in a row like bowling balls in little Mao jackets. Coincidently, they are lined up right next to a giant costco size tub of bulgogi sauce. Which will be finished first?: bao or bulgogi? |

 | | harrylime: Your American cicil war stuff on ere is/was cool .. Americans have a problem placing this war in the mid 19th c tho.. Gung Ho ! lol The Ken Burns doc I enjoyed very much .. ( essentially for the photos ) But Burns' did not, and could not, place the AM civil war in it's context in the 19th c .. Europe was the centre of the Universe in the 19th C .. For everything. And I mean . Everything. And that's that.
Bless Ken Burn's and this doc but you would'nt realise Europe existed watching it lol ... |

Dec-08-11 | | boz: <jessicafischerqueen> Very grateful for the detailed response over at the cafe! My computer should be able to handle the downloads. I'll try tonight at home. Right now I'm at work following the live game Aronian-Carlsen. I look forward to many hours (maybe a lifetime) of viewing using the sources you provided. Thanks too to Travis, a good man to have in your corner as you know. I saw the Great Chess movie in 1992 at a library where you could request a private viewing on 16mm. That was the only way to see it. My girlfriend at the time sat through the whole thing with me though she cared nothing for chess. The memory I retain of that film, besides the fascinating Fischer footage, was Camille Coudari describing the early Karpov as being like a foetus with his huge head and skinny body, adding however, that "his thinness was the thinness of steel." |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Harry> negative. Whether Europeans, Asians, or Eskimos were aware of it or not, the US Civil war was by far the most significant political event of the 19th century. Your game PGN works in my interface! I'll have time to go through it and post a few comments and positions this weekend. Harry you need to join every other person at this website and get yourself a free chess interface and engine and learn how to use it. The painstaking, impossible to screw up instructions to get the simplest free one, Babas/Crafty, are posted in your forum. |

Dec-08-11 | | TheFocus: <Harry> <Europe was the centre of the Universe in the 19th C .. For everything. And I mean . Everything. And that's that.
Bless Ken Burn's and this doc but you would'nt realise Europe existed watching it lol ...> Actually, the Civil War was followed quite closely in Europe, especially England and German Empire. Many countries sent over military observers to see first-hand the many new things that were employed in battles. Troop movements by train, use of new artillery, faster rates of fire in rifles (breech loaders instead of muzzle-loaders), modern theories of strategy involving horses (cavalry), and trains, and boats along the rivers. And who can forget the Merrimac and the Monitor? Gatling guns, though they were not used. Weaponry improved. The American Civil War was the first MODERN war and it changed military strategy throughout the world. And, after that, the United States became more of a world power than before. |
