Graeme Buckley Born 1971 holds the Men's International Master Title: Graeme N Buckley He is currently a professional chess teacher and has one GM norm to his credit.

Boris Markovich Kogan (Hebrew: בוריס קוגן‎; February 8, 1940 – December 25, 1993)Boris Markovich Kogan was a Russian-American chess master.Kogan was the Soviet Junior Champion in 1956 and 1957. He was a full-time chess teacher in the Soviet Union before emigrating and coming to the United States in 1981. In 1981 he was also awarded the International Master title.

He played in the U.S. Chess Championship three times. He was Georgia state champion seven years in a row (1980–1986) and won it a total of nine times (additional wins in 1988 and 1992). Apparently Boris Kogan was a very friendly and kind human being! RIP Boris!

Dec-27-11  TheFocus: <Albertan> <Apparently Boris Kogan was a very friendly and kind human being!>

Absolutely he was!!

He was nicknamed <King of the South> for his many tournament wins.

When you saw him entered, you knew he would win or be at the top.

A supreme gentleman! A quiet man who was respected by everyone who knew him.

I remember him giving me the thumbs up when he watched me win an endgame everyone else thought was drawn.

One master even said, "I never saw that coming." (I was a lowly class player at the time.)

Boris said, "I did."

Dec-29-11  cormier: happy new year <jfq> mam ... <<<<<<<<<<<1 Jn 2:3-11> Beloved: The way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep his commandments.>
Whoever says, "I know him," but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.>
But whoever keeps his word,
the love of God is truly perfected in him.>
This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to walk just as he walked.>
Beloved, I am writing no new commandment to you
but an old commandment that you had from the beginning.>
The old commandment is the word that you have heard.>
And yet I do write a new commandment to you, which holds true in him and among you,
for the darkness is passing away,
and the true light is already shining.>

Whoever says he is in the light,
yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness.>
Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him to cause a fall.>
Whoever hates his brother is in darkness; he walks in darkness
and does not know where he is going
because the darkness has blinded his eyes.>

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Dec-31-11  waustad: After watching the Charousek vids I was really taken by how familiar the buildings were, though I've never been in Hungary and have only taken the train through what was then Czechoslavakia. I lived in Wien for over a year and it seems that there was a very pervasive style in latter 19th century in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

You seem to like tragic figures. From what I've read online Carl Schlechter starved in Wien in 1918 and was buried 93 years ago today.

Happy New Year!
