 | | Phony Benoni: <jessicafischerqueen> Many thanks for the kind words. And thanks also for bringing up the Moscow 1920 collection; there were a few things that needed cleaning up. After glancing at the top of your forum, I feel I must tell you my calamari story. I used to have a girlfriend who played chess. Between rounds of a tournament in Bethesda, Maryland, she dragged me to an Italian restaurant. While I was busy scanning the menu for burgers and fries, she suggested we have calamari as an appetizer. Now, I was at the time very naive about seafood. But this was the early days of our relationship, and I was anxious to impress her wherever possible. Cautiously, I asked, "I've never had calamari. What is it exactly?" "Try it and see."
So I tried it. Wasn't bad; looked, felt, and tasted somewhat like fried onion rings. She asked, "What do you think?"
"Not bad. Sort of like french fried onion rings." (I could speak my mind with her.) "So what is it exactly?" "Squid."
"You're joking." She had a sense of humor, after all. So she called the waitress over. "Could you explain to the gentleman was calimari is?" The waitress helpfully replied, "Squid."
"Oh", I said.
Like I said, I <used> to have a girlfriend who played chess... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Phony Benoni> So your girlfriend got an unexpected "squid pro quo" in this tale. Excellent squid story, thanks. I'm impressed you had a girlfriend. <Domdaniel> once told me "chess players don't have girlfriends." He'll be pleased to be corrected by your anecdote.
*Squid pro quo was invented by me, not <Big Crawdaddy>, despite any claims to the contrary. If he or anyone else makes such a claim, I direct them to contact my lawyer, <hms123>. Whose law degree is printed on a |

From Alekhine vs Kimura, 1933 <Mar-09-11 ughaibu: Chessgames.com: you really do need to consider the consequences of banning erudite members, such as WMD, while tolerating wankers like Goldsby.> I couldn't possibly agree more with your post here. I have read and learned from literally hundreds of <WMD> history posts in the last two years of research. Was <WMD> indeed banned? When, and for what reason, exactly? |

User: JaneEyre
User: BobCrisp As for why he should be banned, it's well known the only real banning offence here is personally attacking the admins, and this was the last post of his original account... <Jul-26-06 WMD: <I'm wondering if I should get a premium membership.>Not unless the money is used to find some decent moderators.> (Of course there was also the whole racism issue, but it's pretty clear that wasn't what earned him the boot.) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Switch> aha, thanks for that extremely detailed account. QUESTION: why does CG allow previously banned members to come back with new accounts, when they know the new accounts had been previously banned? Is it their policy of "second chances" where the new account is not banned if it doesn't repeat the same violations? If so, then I don't see any difference between <Haydon> and <Colonel Mortimer> in this respect- both accounts persistently followed/follow and attack <Goldsby>. By not re-banning <Mortimer>, who has actually publicly stated he is <Haydon>, is CG admitting they made a mistake by banning him in the first place? *I like <Mortimer> and his posts, I don't care for <Goldsby>, and I think the website would be considerably improved by the latter's absence. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <jessicafischerqueen: QUESTION: why does CG allow previously banned members to come back with new accounts, when they know the new accounts had been previously banned? Is it their policy of "second chances" where the new account is not banned if it doesn't repeat the same violations?> Well, I don't pretend to understand our admins :)
But they are indeed great believers in second chances; officially their second chance policy is meant for those who write to them and promise an improvement, but it's frequently extended to those who just go ahead and grab it - insofar as they don't instantly repeat their original offences. (It wasn't extended to the user who terrorised <Jim Bartle> and <keypusher>, even though he did promise an improvement; the admins decided his résumé was so abysmal there was no letting him back.) Also, a banned member may manage to return without the admins noticing, especially if his e-mail and IP addresses are different and/or it has been some time since his last appearance (so the admins aren't expecting him anymore - besides, time heals wounds and sometimes changes people, so a banned member returning after a long absence has better chances even if noticed). By the time his identity is recognised he may have already established himself as a reasonably non-offensive poster. Finally, our admins are usually very slow to take <any> action :) For the record, <Colonel Mortimer> has been banned from this site not only as <hayton3>, but also <hayton4>, <Jilted Rook>, <Rook Battery>, <Heathen Tory>, <Honey Threat>, <hpdrifter> and possibly others. (This list is originally <tpstar>'s, and any omissions should be blamed on him, not me.) I'm not sure why exactly this one incarnation was allowed to stay, though it has to be said that he refrained from attacking <AJ> for quite a while. The short version: mysterious are the ways of admins :) |

Jan-15-12
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Switch> thanks for that extensive history, and yes <tpstar> is stellar in tracking socks eh? I've gone to his forum more than once just to look up sock references. Well I suppose slow to take action is good if we want lots of freedom of speech here. I'll paraphrase a recent tranchant post by the admins: "Christmas isn't the best time for a public lynching." |

Jan-16-12 | | Boomie: <Jess Squish>
The squid hat craze has led to many new idioms.
Sometimes the proud donner of a squid hat gets a tentacle up the nose. The expression "Somebody always gets a tentacle up the nose." has become common usage. This is analogous to the Mexican "Somebody always gets stuck with the worm." though without the buzz. |
|
Jan-16-12 | | playground player: <Jessicafischerqueen> Just a little bit of butter, water, and parsley. Squid has a very delicate, subtle flavor which I like a lot, so I don't want a strong sauce to drown it out. At our local Italian restaurant, the breading on their friend calamari overwhelms that natural flavor. Advise <Phony Benoni> that if squid didn't taste good, it wouldn't be so widely used as bait. |
|
Jan-16-12 | | TheFocus: Here in Alohaland, squid is referred to as "tako."
You can imagine my surprise the first time I heard it called that, me being from The SOUTH. I thought they meant "tacos." I think you can get squid tacos at Wahoo's Fish Tacos restaurant. So, "tako tacos" would be on the menu.
I am not going to order them. |
|
Jan-16-12 | | technical draw: <TheFocus> A tako is also a Korean barbecue taco. (and the name of the restaurant that serves them) |
