May-07-12  waustad: I ws going to post this in the Cafe, but thought that this might be a better venue. What do people think of the WGM, WIM and WFM titles? I know that there are women who have qualified for them but didn't even apply, wanting an IM title far more than a WGM. It also seems to confuse non-playing journalists. I was reading an article about Eva Moser and she was described as a "Grossmeisterin." She is both an IM and a WGM, but not a GM, though perhaps the writer meant a WGM with the word not a GM who is female. My German is not strong enough to tell for sure. This could be like the journalist who seems to have thought Yasser Seirawan was WCC as a junior, not World Junior Champion.

It also becomes confusing when there are mens sections and womens sections. A number of women have played in olympiads in both sections, depending on the year. Pia Cramling and Moser both come to mind. Before Markus Ragger got good, Moser played first board for Austria (men). Later she played first board for Austria (women).

May-07-12  waustad: Thanks for the link. I chose here to post because it probably has a closer to even gender mix than anyplace else I could think of. My own view is that ideally there shouldn't be any distinction between genders in chess, but that as a bridge, having top woman prizes and the like helps pay the bills for the few women in the game. They should be encouraged.

May-09-12  Boomie: <harrylime: Magnus Carlsen is Fischer's heir. Discuss.>

Fischer was an openings expert. Carlsen doesn't care for openings and tries to get out of book. Feels more like Capablanca to me. Once out of the book with an equal position, Capa and Carlsen are near impossible to beat. The same could be said, of course, about Fischer and Kasparov. Capa and Carlsen would be hard pressed to get out of the opening with an equal position against those two opening experts.

jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi> Yes I wonder if <Eyal> is going to watch the match? I wonder if he will ever come back here. Speaking of which we miss you so much eh!

This site is like a small, overcooked squab without you.

Of course I know you are busy and have an actual good life away from here, and your photo career and such.

I'm going with BANANA to retain his top hat.

May-11-12  Alien Math: Adobe: Pay upgrade price to patch critical bugs | http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...

Computerworld - Adobe has told users of its Creative Suite, which includes the company's premier products like Photoshop and Illustrator, to spend $375 to upgrade if they want patches for eight critical vulnerabilities.

On Tuesday, Adobe issued security alerts http://www.adobe.com/support/securi... for eight vulnerabilities in Photoshop 5 and earlier, and Illustrator and Flash Professional 5.5 and earlier. Of the eight bugs, one is in Flash Professional, two are in Photoshop and five in Illustrator.

But rather than patch the bugs in the older programs, Adobe told users to upgrade to CS6.

"If the prior product was five years old, then I could understand it from a lifecycle perspective," he said. "But Photoshop CS5 is just over two years old."

Adobe launched CS5 in mid-April 2010, and CS5.5 in April 2011.

Annie K.: Hey, <Jess>, how the hell are you?! :D

<Deffi> good to see you around here again. :) I was just writing a post to your forum a while ago when it suddenly disappeared! The forum, that is. I got what is probably a very rarely-seen error message when I tried to submit the post. :s

Anyhoo, it was going to ask if you'd maybe like to help out with cg's audio project with files for the native pronunciations of names of well-known Indian players, such as Humpy Koneru, and maybe even that mysterious Viswanathan fellow? ;)

Hope all is well with you, in any case.

<Jess> srsly, I can has update plz? :)
