Sep-10-12  benjinathan: <<Annie> you could put your monitor on top of a stack of chess books to adjust the height?>

Ahhh, so that is what chessbooks are for.

jessicafischerqueen: <benji> I never once got any better at actually playing chess from reading a book. I've only ever improved my playing strength by playing people at a long time control (at least 90 minutes each) around 50 points higher than me and then analyzing the game (blunder checking, really) after with my computer.

That's hard work, however, it can be excruciating.

Luckily, however, I haven't done such work for a good three years now, and I've dropped back three levels probably.

Less pressure here at the bottom.

Sep-11-12  benjinathan: I agree with you- not that I have ever done it.

As a pactical matter it means joining a club or setting aside 3 hours to play on line against an opponent you know will put in the time rather than just blitz it out despite the time control.

Its tough.

I have been playing for basically as long as I have been on <cg> and following my initial burst of improvement it has been slow. I am not sure I have improved more than 10 points in the last year or two. I play one 35 minute a side game a week plus numerous blitz games.

Oh well. I know I am not alone...

jessicafischerqueen: <benji> yes and remember this site is full of chessplayers and other such riff raff. Any of us could clean up on a casual player. Also, don't forget that despite there being some very strong players around Cg.com, the whole ratings gamut from 0-3000 is represented here. I just want to enjoy my chess playing, I hope you do too.
Sep-11-12  Travis Bickle: Jess congrats on your good peformance in that online tournament with a 2nd place trophy! ; P

P.S. Studying chess with books is a talent all it's own. Most recreational chess players just can't grasp all the concepts and the frustating endless variations on the what if lines of many chess books. Other than getting a sound idea on what you are trying to accomplish with a given opening studying chess is for the very devoted and imo gifted players. For most laymen chess players I think practising tactics & playing 20 to 30 minute games online also with 5 & 10 minute blitz games against similar competition is the best way to improve.

Sep-12-12  Alien Math: Google censure continue arrive in news

Google restricts Pirate Bay from Autocomplete, Instant search features By Ian Paul, PCWorld Sep 11, 2012 7:53 AM

The changes to Google's search services are unlikely to stop anyone from finding The Pirate Bay, especially since the site is still in Google's index. But the move could be part of Google's plan announced in late 2010 to remove search terms from Autocomplete that are “closely associated with piracy.”

More recently, Google in mid-August announced piracy-related changes to the way it ranks websites. The company said any site that receives a high number of removal notices for copyright infringement may appear lower in Google search results. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2621...

Your comment made me look up my renewal date. It's Sept. 27, but 2013. How I got an extra year I don't know. Maybe I won something and forgot about it. Oh, well, I'll take it.

Sep-18-12  technical draw: Searching internet domains I found that jessicafischer.com is available. I think I'll take it and sell it back to you when you're famous.
Sep-18-12  hms123: <TD>

What do you mean <when you're famous>? She is already the start of stage, screen, and television, not to mention youtube.

Sep-18-12  technical draw: <hms123> Oh, yeah? Then why is jessicafischer.com still available? It's a goldmine!
Sep-18-12  dakgootje: Because everyone who has tried to claim the domain has died mysterious deaths.
Sep-18-12  Everyone: Well, there's life in the old dog yet.
Sep-18-12  dakgootje: And there was I thinking only cats had multiple lives!

I'd already put you alongside hms, who famously squandered his first seven lives after a particularly sticking habit of using anti-freeze as mouth-wash - and afterwards suing Death for breach of contract.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the specifics of 'contracts', although the counter of acting seems very tempting indeed.

Yes, I can confirm that, although the old dog has to do a lot of teaching these days.
