 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Annie> it looks like <Fig> has been rejected both by the "first list" responder and by Fig himself. He wants his old nickname back and how did <Doggimus> get registered at the site? |
|
Feb-12-13
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Good heavens, <Doggimus> has created his own Doggimus account! This is in direct violation of the unspoken "blue sentence writing rules" and also several other cg.com conventions, including the one that says "One no Club" is asking if your partner has at least 13 points. |
|
Feb-12-13
 | | OhioChessFan: <Her Majesty: It was made in the last 24 hours. When I first saw that I immediately wondered if you'd created it yourself because you needed the word for the sentence. <There'd be nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned>, but all the same I really doubted that you did that.> |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Ohio> well played. In that vein, you'll note that the second convention <Doggimus> violated is actually a Bridge Convention. The idea is that you have a hand suited to a no-trump contract, so you want to know straight off if your partner has at least 13 points. If she did, you'd know that a lofty contract might be feasible. So you bid "One club," asking for the response "Two clubs," meaning your partner has the points. I can't remember how the rest of the convention goes, I haven't played since Middle School. There's one bid that means "yes" and one that means "no," but it's tricky because if you are asking for a point count with "One club" it means you are aiming at a no-trump contract and you have at least 16 points. So your partner won't want to let the bidding peter out if she has 10 points or so, lest you miss a chance to make a medium level contract. In reality, as I suspect you already know, I was tickled pink to see Doggimus make his nickname official, by his own hand. It's always good to have one's own words thrown in one's face, that's what friends are for. <Switch> is good at this, as well as <brankat> and <Tony Palmer> and a few others with long memories. There's that embarrassing, yet still entertaining, irony of being hoisted as such. On a rare serious note, however, regarding the blue writing in general- I certainly wouldn't mind if you guys did make up some of them for key sentences, but wouldn't that defeat the "Easter egg" feeling of finding a way to say what you want based on the Mystery of what's already there? In the very few blue posts I've made, each time I was tempted to make up a new one, but glad that I didn't. It might sound silly to speak of <Lotsapoppa's> comedy invention in non-comedy terms, but there is something special about the blue writing that goes beyond comedy. What that is, exactly, I don't know, but I can feel it. |

Yes. Very mysterious, very exciting, a little bit unnerving. |
