 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Richard> heh-- your post is much more than "quibbles" it is a substantive critique of <Jen Shahade's> lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNdo...
I think Jen herself might appreciate your notes on her work here. I agree with you about <Rubinstein's> immortal- that's a stand alone masterpiece, doesn't need to be prefaced by any comments on how error-ridden chess supposedly was in the classical era. It was a brilliancy plain and simple. Also, here is one of your games against <International Master Bobby Cheng>: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNdo...
You appear to punish <IM Cheng> for his daring Queenside Castle in a wild Sicilian. Bobby Cheng (black) to move:

 | | Richard Taylor: Jessica yes - thanks! I had big trouble beating the young players when I got back into chess about 2002 or so. But apart from Rapid games I was one of the few A Grade players to beat or draw with Bobby. In contrast, Daniel Shen, who had a different style, was hard to beat and I've never beaten him (from memory). Of course Bobby Cheng wasn't an IM then but he was very hard to even hold. I had a draw and 2 wins. I must upload my game I played a fairly direct attack. But in a strange endgame I trapped his B in what seemed an open position! But he managed to draw! I thought I had won that. Maybe my score was 2 draws and one won by me... He certainly punished me for weak openings in Rapid Chess. He was coached by Ewen Green who was recently second in the NZ Champs and is a kind of walking chess encyclopedia and one of those guys who can or used to play 15 blindfold games and all that stuff...A good coach esp. for opening methods etc also tactics I think and general strategy and endings. I doubt I would get a look in now though! Playing in Australia of course means he is getting much better opposition. Re Shahade. I think in lectures you have to leave things out so I suppose "Great Classical Games" is another lecture. Today I played over a game where Timman beat Bent Larsen and I was saying to my son I hadn't seen many of his games or wins (except one where he made a nice attack against Spassky) - and I turn on the computer, and there he is beating Geller! I think his problem was he refused to take draws, or realise when he was losing (or in danger). This showed up in his match result against Fischer where he avoided or missed a number of ways to get draws. But psychology plays a part. If one is too timid it is a problem, too confident, also. Even Petrosian had the problem that, having surprised Fischer with a really nice break and pawn sac, he failed to push. But the great game where he played a 20 move combination with a sac, and the game where he and Fischer both played a fantastic game*, albeit it was a draw in the end, each having 2 Qs show how players have their moments. *In 'My 60 Memorable Games' |
