| May-19-13 | | achieve: <Jess> Two things that caught my eye following the first super tournament in Norway, and basically it is about the (non-)predictive value of 'statistics' ... A hotly debated topic, as you probably know, but once again we have a sobering statistic in that <Ves Topalov hasn't scored a single win> in 18 consecutive games in Norway, 9 in Blitz, and 9 in Classical TC. Topalov, one of the most dynamic players of the past decade at least, coming off a historic 8/11 in the very strong Fide Grand Prix in Zug (tsoook), and he suddenly runs on empty it appears, hitting an unprecedented dry spell. Secondly, the young Chinese kid Wang Hao, after scoring a meager 2.5/7 - seemingly out of nowhere finishes by winning his lat two games versus the highest rated player ever, MC, and the legendary defending world champ, Anand. Two consecutive days! One must conclude almost that to achieve such a rare feat, Hao must really be something special... And guess what, I think even before I started kibbing here at Cg, I was a member of ICC, must have been 2004, and watched the blitz games by some of the best in the world then, and still for that matter, with the likes of Radja, Morozevich, Karjakin, Carlsen, ND Short etc. ... Several times a week I did this for entertainment, relaxation, ahem, actually sometimes it was freakin nervewrecking, but at least it wasn't me who was profusely sweating, and - and enjoyed my chess voyeurism, to be quite honest. And learning some stuff as a bonus, too. And suddenly, one night out of nowhere, there was this literally 'kid' from China, with the handle <DarkRain>, and I immediately noticed - one night following him around for a few hours, that this kid was something special. Not just fast and agile, tactically, but just a very creative positional player, in addition to being a true magician, tactically, if he faced great threats... I immediately took to him, was a bit disappointed or mildly surprised rather that his break-through took a while, but as usual my talent for spotting talent in a flash, that thing called intuition, was again confirmed. Just thought I'd share that last little anecdote, heh, in addition to these highly improbable statistical events that we could observe. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Niels> thanks for that thoughtful, and heart warming reminiscence of the "early days" of <Wang Hao>. I checked out some of his games on the weekend because of your story. He is wonderful- a thrilling atttacking player. His game against <Naka> in the ultra sharp "Polugaevsky" Sicilian occupied me for a few hours just trying to figure out the tactics, the threats, why a piece cannot be taken, and so on. Wang Hao vs Nakamura, 2012
I read a bit about <Polu> and he earned his reputation in the USSR for extensive original analysis in a variety of openings. True love of chess has the analyst, I think- and they did it all before computers too. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim> Your <Mad Max> humor reminds me of the Benny Hill scene where he plays an old woman being interviewed. But the interview transmission is interrupted so she has to rely on a printed list of the questions. She answers the next question instead of the first one each time. The interviewer asks "how are you holding up these days"? But she thinks the question is "How is the neighborhood you grew up in?" So she says
"OH YOU WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE OLD PLACE. THEY'VE PUT A MOTORWAY THROUGH." |

| May-20-13 | | achieve: <Jess> Glad you liked it, and there is a natural follow-up to that story of the early days not only of Wang Hao, but also of Magnus Carlsen... In that I saw them both in the flesh at the 2006 <Youth vs Experience> tourny that took place here in Amsterdam. I remember <Beliavsky> turning back the clock as he clobbered Hao in fact quite convincingly, and the most beautiful thing was the post mortem, Beli literally in teaching mode towards young Hao, pointing out his mistakes with great precision, where Hao had not taken care of certain opening principles, and Wang Hao just stood there, taking it all in, trying to hang on to every word Beliavsky uttered, to learn from him as much as possible... Great stuff, that, the way an oldie feels the drive to instruct a young talent like Hao, who was/is very humble and modest. A likeable young man. It was a very hot summer then, august 2006, and of course I couldn't pass up on the chance to go to the venue a number of times, mainly because of the buzz surrounding the then 16 year old kid Carlsen. Ironically <I> felt like a kid in a candystore there, with good old Ljubojevic playing for the oldies, and playing a memorable game against Carlsen. I'll show some of that when I get around to it. But both the young men's stars were indeed on the rise there, Magnus shooting ahead and away from Wang, and basically the whole chess world, for a time, but now Wang Hao is pushing through as the real deal from China. |

| May-20-13 | | achieve: <Jess> Here's the position, Magnus has just played Qf2-e1, thinking that it will only be a matter of time to win this, Qe1 looks quite good loading up on the e-file, eyeing in all three directions of the board, but Ljubo is quick to see that there is a tactical refutation suddenly available... Within 20 seconds he played the move... Can you find it? click for larger viewPerhaps this isn't so easy if you're rusty, and sure as stitches kid Carlsen had obviously overlooked the resource himself... But after Ljubo made the move, Magnus was so visibly distraught, ostentatively gesturing, shaking his head, and in fact Ljubo should have played on, because Carlsen would have to surrender the exchange, and from there it would not be easy to hold as White... But Ljubo sensed the awkward situation, and after the two had exchanged a few glances, Ljubo 'decided' to put forward his hand to offer the draw; after all he was let off the hook, and Carlsen immediately accepted. He could have been tortured if Ljubo would have been in the mood... Quite unbelievable how the psychology and emotional states of the players can be influenced and changed by one tactical shot, in effect nullifying hours of hard work, and reversing the chances! Ljubomir obviously wasn't that eager to enter a long duel after having suffered for hours, but essentially both were let off the hook! Draw?
hehe
It's funny how vivid the memories of my visits back in 2006 are. |
