WCC Editing Project: <Dr. Euwe> Jinx!

Just yesterday I saw one of two (2) Dr. Euwe avatars you used to have and I immediately felt it was you.

I fully believed it was you until I saw the <thomastonk>.

Amazing what these photos can do eh? I still dream of the blue elephant.

Remember I made a five or six post audiovisual tribute to your blue elephant, I think maybe it was on your birthday?

That's got to be six years ago at least now.

Yes <thomastonk> is one of the most prolific and accurate of history posters. He has access to a great number of fine Dutch and German newspapers if I'm not mistaken.

He regularly shares this fruit in the <Biographer's Biscuit>.

Also double jinx I was just looking at my old bike- I have to change my apartment in a month and I was debating either throwing out the old bike or trying to fix it up.

What will happen next?!

ahhhh

Jul-27-13  achieve: <Jess> You mean you have to move out, to another apartment across town?

Please do not kill an old bike just because it's dirty; better donate it to someone who will love rubbing it up again, and I assure you that I derived great satisfaction, really, from not having given up on a piece of machinery I was too lazy to maitain properly. But your situation is different, and you may not have the time for it.... Cost me a little over an hour. Jess sayin.

WCC Editing Project: <Niels> your words and ideas are healthy. I'm going to keep my bike and get it running, both to save it and to prevent myself from turning into a gigantic fatass.

I did peek over at the <Stroganoff>, and I see what you mean about that fellow.

Here's my capsule off the cuff report.

A guy wanted to show off by antagonizing people. Another guy (you) posted something brief and beautiful in good faith. Then another guy (the long suffering Irada) went to a great deal of trouble to give the first guy a spanking.

Just speaking for myself, I don't see the point in even reading stuff posted in bad faith, particularly by people who like to get attention by poking others with a stick. I prefer to ignore such pokers, and generally I think it's pointless to listen to them, let alone argue with them.

Jul-27-13  achieve: <Jess> Honestly - I had a few broken parts: 1) a broken back carrier, which i just removed by turning <one> screw, removed a few elastic bands, et voila; then 2) my back tyre was flat; within 15 minutes I had fixed the hole, and had found that minuscule piece of sharp glassy bit that had been the culprit for a number of times, so easy, just put it under good bright light, put on glasses, and it's a walk in the park. Then I thought let's see if we can make this top product look good again, and half an hour later it was in perfect condition, and just now i went down quickly for a few groceries and she rode like a Rolls. I was proud, also to see it that beautiful again, and darn it I felt and looked good riding it.

<Beeeg little Pawn> Same here, bad faith alert already from the start a few months ago and immediately put him on ignore, but in a way got involved along the sideline as I marveled at Abdel, much of his rhetoric and writing style is top notch, and I hate bullies, especially from Right wing Christian political descent. They must be defeated, so I sorta poked a bit and complimented a few guys.

There's a few layers to that, but i won't bother you with those.

Glad to see we are giving each other sound advice, which always feels good, and is in fact extremely helpful and real, which is rare but important in online conversation; to stay real.

WCC Editing Project: <Niels> I admire your ability to actually fix mechanical things.

I wouldn't know where to start, so I'm either going to drop my bike off at the local shop for repair and buffing, or give it to a neighbor.

I'm glad to have the chance to have authentic online conversation with you as well. I have no doubt we've always been in good faith with each other even whilst arguing.

heh

WCC Editing Project: I like <Abdel Irada> too.
Jul-27-13  achieve: <Jess> I really can't remember much arguing, but possibly because of the high emotional investment and good vibes for such extended periods, those differences and occasional - rare - confrontations become magnified, and do leave deeper imprints in the memory circuitry. This in itself is quite miraculous, that level of sensitivity.

I even brought my bike back up again to buff her up even more; the payback is considerable. ;)

WCC Editing Project: I like the word "buff" because it reminds me of <Bufon>.
Jul-27-13  achieve: I liked ONyL TrU KinGGssIII!!

This was, what, almost a decade ago?

I was thinking this afternoon, about our age, will you be turning the left counter next January? Possibly I am off by a year, two tops.

Wang Hao's excellent <OBSTRUCTION> shot 48 ♗d3-f5! 1-0 wins the game *instantly* by <PREVENTING> Black from <LINE-OPENING> the critical e5->h8 diagonal in order for the Black e5-bishop to <GAIN CONTROL OVER THE PROMOTION SQUARE> the h8-sq of the White h6-passer.

Jul-27-13  notyetagm: D Andreikin vs Caruana, 2013

30 ... ?

<Check It Out: ....

30…Rh8

Whoa, what was that?! That move stunned me. Allow white to capture the g6 pawn with tempo? Didn't even cross my mind. I'm sitting here contemplating what to do after white plays 31.Rxg6………………………..etc.>

30 ... ♖g8-h8!

click for larger view

The <CHESSVIBES> website explains this *beautiful* tactic from Caruana thusly.

http://www.chessvibes.com/caruana-m...

<"In a middlegame with opposite-coloured bishops, the Russian seemed to have the initiative but with a neat little tactic Caruana seized the h-file and with it the initiative. Andreikin's exchange sac didn't help."

...

<<< 30... Rh8!

Now Black seizes the h-file.

31. Rxh8

31. Rxg6? Rag8! 31. Qh3? Rxh6 32. Qxh6 Qb3! > >>>

Caruana's brilliant point is that the <LINE-OPENING> 31 ♖h6xg6? loses to 31 ... ♖a8-g8! and the <WEAK POINT> on g2 falls!

(VARIATION)
31 ♖h6xg6? ♖a8-g8!

One of the best examples I have ever seen of <TACTICS IN THE SERVICE OF STRATEGY>. The brilliant 30 ... ♖g8-h8! allows Caruana to <SEIZE> the <DOMINANT OPEN FILE> the open h-file.

<Ulhumbrus: After 17 Nxg5 White's pieces are no less than four moves ahead in development. Kramnik converts this asset into a pawn and a win>

A *great* example of the <CONVERSION OF ONE TYPE OF ADVANTAGE INTO ANOTHER>.

Here Kramnik playing White transforms his advantage in <TIME (TEMPO)>, his <LEAD IN DEVELOPMENT>, into a <MATERIAL ADVANTAGE>, an extra pawn.

A great example of the principle that <FORCING MOVES SHOW YOU WHERE THE PIECES REALLY ARE>.

Jul-27-13  waustad: I hope defi isn't going the way of mal. Last time her premium membership lapsed she went from an apple to a tigress. I hope we'll soon see another incarnation. I was really glad to see mateo start posting again during the time that they had the 3 months free promo. The folks I most want to donate premium memberships to are not old members here, and that feature didn't work the last time I checked, but if something like that would get mal and mateo back it might be worth it. Then again, if I'm spending that much I might just buy into ICC for myself instead. Watching Larry Christiansen mull over tactical lines is a treat.

I know that <Deffi> is raising a family and she has a full time job too, so it's understandable she has less time for chess.

SwitchingQuylthulg: It's a pity but almost certainly for her own best.

Once, she told me she'd had a miserable day and I said "well, at least it's over now", it already being 0:04 the following day her time. That comment flew right over her head - it simply didn't occur to her a day might be over that early. I have no idea whether she eventually got some sleep.

And then she started devoting more and more of her "spare" time to photography. Saying she doesn't have much time for chess is putting it very mildly.

Jul-30-13  Travis Bickle: If you haven't seen this Radiohead song on my Forum here's maybe the best song from 'In Rainbows'. harrylime likes it a lot also.

Jon Tenney who so ably played second fiddle Fritz on "The Closer" is starring in an amusing PI offering, "King and Maxwell". The show is comfortably within our stringent parameters for dramedy. One misses Gyro Wedgesick, of course, but how can she be replaced?
