 | | OhioChessFan: <We should avoid language such as <"the chess world"> and <"all"> in all (heh) of these intros.> Yeah, that "all" hurt my eyes. <FSR> was correct to point out the overly long sentence. |

| Jul-31-13 | | Boomie: <WCC Editing Project: I find this <Jon Tennis Net> to be quite cute for a 90 year old man as well.> Fabu Factoid: As a much younger man, Jon Tunney stole the heavyweight crown from the Molasses Molar. |

| Jul-31-13 | | achieve: <Jess> Bought the ROLAND quad cap - sorta forced by the shop owner, with whom I've split - but since it is one of the best audio interfaces around for that price I decided to take the offer; then I proceeded to inform about a good set of mics, and they really had no respectable offer in the 100-200 euro segment, so when he put me to buy this one vague type mic without the option to just return it, money back, I snapped. Since he doesn't have alternatives in that segment; other shops do; so bad luck, but you can not do business with me like that; I'm willing to buy other stuff from you, provided you give me a fair range of choice. He did not. He had NOTHING. So - for the heart of my recording gear, the microphone, I have to save up - I already made a great choice - but as I see it now some of these webshops are really top notch, and you can work out what it is you seek an need and they just deliver it squeeky clean and for the lowest market price. That guy near in my neighbourhood is really losing the battle. No Refund within 2 weeks? No alternative offers? It's a joke. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Game Collection: WCC: Alekhine-Bogoljubov Rematch 1934 Let me ramble a bit. It's 6:30, I woke up 2 hours ago, I am not in the mood to care about my spelling and grammar and style. I am a bit interested in a little editing work, though maybe on an ad hoc basis. I don't want to commit and am not all that interested in the work being done by the other fine WCC kibitzers. However, I see a couple editing improvements in the intro to the above link. What would be the proper procedure and place to mention them? I don't want to intrude into a group meeting when I'm not a member, and I don't want to come off as some pontifical gatekeeper who must pass muster on all efforts before they are given the seal of approval. OTOH, I think this site could be a high class version of Wikipedia for the Chess world, and even the slightest improvements should be sought and encouraged, from any quarter. I hope that makes sense. I am going back to bed now. |

 | | WCC Editing Project: <Ohio> Good Heavens! (a rare appropriate time to use a phrase I'm currently overusing) Please consider yourself a full member of our "team" and please do post your <patented Ohioizations> in the forum http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches.... All cg.com kibbutzers are welcome and encouraged to help us edit the History of the World Chess Championship. But you especially, based on proven merit and your unique brand of stern growthfulness. (warning- not actually a word) Post as many corrections or ideas as you like, on any intro you like, as often as you like. All edit suggestions and corrections are logged directly into the mirror game collections, and style corrections in particular are frequently just copied and pasted directly into the intros, as I did when you <Ohioized> the bios I wrote. I didn't get where I am today by not copy and pasting good edits into a text. It seems you're up on the kibbutzing there, so you do know that some edits will "disappear" if we end up eliminating entire paragraphs, or even entire introductions. But this doesn't mean we shouldn't style edit now. It's a terrible idea to "wait till it's done" before actually doing it. With that kind of thinking we'd never finish the dang thing. Please dig in and do as much or little editing as you please. Also don't feel you need to limit yourself to "style editing." You know as much chess history as anyone else around here, and in fact your work with <doggimus> has you freshly boned up, as you know. (warning- a truly unfortunate phrase) We are lucky to have any participation from you.
By "we" I mean everybody in the world, if only we <all> knew, if only we <all> knew... |

 | | WCC Editing Project: <Niels> I remain engrossed by the saga of you setting up your new recording studio. Particularly since I'm an interested party; the idea of us collaborating on a documentary has given me a three week smile. Quite right to stick to your guns! It's a buyers market out there, so you can afford to be ruthless. The bottom line is to find out what you really want and then get it under the most favorable conditions. |

Ha! I got that boxing reference, partly because last month I downloaded every single <Mohammed Ali> fight and every single <Mohammed Ali> documentary and watched every minute. <Gene Tunney> was a boxer! And <Jack Dempsey> was the "Manassa Mauler," one of the best sports nicknames ever. SPORTS TRIVIA:
Two well known athletic champions from two different sports have shared this fine nickname- who are the athletes?
NO GOOGLING (I'll know).
One hint- the sports are boxing and tennis.
"The Wild Bull of the Pampas." |

 | | WCC Editing Project: <Howard> at the risk of ruining your day, can you explain what these match conditions actually means? <The conditions were that there could be up to 30 games in the match, and the winner had to obtain at least six wins and score 15 1/2 points.> If you know, pretend you're talking to a stupid person. <SCENES WE DON'T SEE IN REAL LIFE, BUT SHOULD SEE>: A worried mother takes her child to a psychologist.
<Mother> "We're very worried about her progress in Grade I" <Psychologist> "Have you considered the possibility your child is stupid?" |
|
| Jul-31-13 | | crawfb5: I'm not Howard, nor do I play him on TV. He's probably busy reminding me I need more sleep. Who am I to argue with a tennis pro over the net? Still, I talk to stupid people for a living, so maybe I should do this. <The conditions were that there could be up to 30 games in the match, and the winner had to obtain at least six wins and score 15 1/2 points.> There is a maximum number of games (30). By implication, there is also a <minimum> number of games (16 -- 15 wins and one draw=15.5). While six wins are <required> to win the match, a 6-0 score is not <sufficient> because the minimum number of games have not yet been played. Why specifically 15.5? The maximum score for the loser in a full 30-game match would be 14.5. Why specify a minimum? Was this a multiple-venue match? Perhaps it was to insure everybody got <some> games. |
|
Jul-31-13
 | | WCC Editing Project: <Big> thank you so much for that full explanation. So this means that <Alekhine> did not get draw odds right? Yes, the match was indeed mutliple-venue. Cripes you are a smart man. |
|
| Jul-31-13 | | crawfb5: Why would AA ever need draw odds against Bogo? :-) |

I got that boxing reference, partly because last month I downloaded every single <Mohammed Ali> fight and every single <Mohammed Ali> documentary and watched every minute.> I figgered you knew about the Tunney-Dempsey "Long count" fight else my name mangling attempt would have flopped like a Borscht belt comic in a vat of molesasses. Ali made the short list of my favorite people of the 60's. He not only had one of the finest bodies in all of sports, his skill for one-liners is unrivalled. Reporter: You're a fighter. Why don't you go to Vietnam to fight for your country? Ali: There are no referees in Vietnam.
Heh. I love that guy. |

Jul-31-13
 | | WCC Editing Project: <Ali> made the long list according to the American Sportswriter's Association. They voted him "athlete of the half century."
<Jim Thorpe> was voted "athlete of the other half of the century." You may know him as the Indian who played professional hockey, football, lacrosse, and baseball, all at the same time. I know him because he was in the <PINT OF GUINNESS Book of Drinking Records> which I saw once. |
