Aug-26-13  Thanh Phan: <jessicafischerqueen< Congrats on your successful moving ^.^

I hope their being strict at first is just a reminder there are times to play and times to work, and that there are in fact rules, somewhere, http://xkcd.com/356/ lol

Aug-27-13  Karpova: <jess>

Congratulations!

I don't think that he ignored your post and that this was his answer: Borislav Ivanov

<twinlark: Btw, the cheater's page is being regularly checked for comments and ideas by at least one International Arbiter who is on the anti-cheating committee.>

He must be very thankful to <AJ>'s manifold, substantial suggestions and repostings of other people's posts and links.

Aug-27-13  twinlark: <Karpova>

Yeah well...it's a lot better than it was. Admin have deleted most of the squabbles. A few random posts such as you refer to don't do much harm, it's just when there are pages of flame wars that anyone interested is put off.

Aug-27-13  Karpova: <twinlark: Hi Jess - Was your recent visit to Boris Johnson's place something Big Bio should know about?>

I guess you asked because of Wesley So. If I had known whom you are referring to when writing Boris Johnson, I could have told you that <offramp> was meant immediately. I was even tempted to clarify the matter on the So page but refrained as every rebuttal would probably have been interpreted as claiming that you were not an highly reputable member (typical poor man's rhetoric).

jessicafischerqueen: hehe well at least we are archiving a "new catalogue" of typographical boners.

This will come in handy for public conversations where we deliberately want to confuse folks.

Aug-30-13  Karpova: If you hacked into Nat's homepage, you could change her title to <grandmaser>.

  jessicafischerqueen: LOL!

Given recent events, that might bring on World War III.

Luckily, the nickname you use for her is good for anonymity.

It's also a really good nickname, because not only is it not pejorative, it kind of gives her a down to earth feel that is certainly also part of her personality.

<Annie K> likes Nat, and our Annie is certainly no fool.

On a related topic- by "home page" do you mean Nat's website, or her CG.com bio?

We could change her CG.com bio at any time eh?

Luckily for Nat, and for our entire website for that matter, as I'm sure you already know, editors don't do that because to bring inside jokes into actual chess history bios is not only a crime against chess- it would also get us immediately fired as biographer admins. Daniel keeps an automatic log of exactly who edits what, where, and when.

That said, I still live in daily fear that someone will go into the <Petrovs> bio and rewrite everything I put there. It took me a good two months to research and write that, with considerable help from <OhioEditingFan>.

While I'm on this topic, I really liked the way you announced your changes to the <Rotlewi> biography, and the way you put out a call for any new information.

As always, you show a real respect to previous biographers and, most importantly, to the actual facts.

Aug-30-13  Karpova: <jess>

I'm sure that <chessgames.com> rightfully trusts us in this matter, especially since every editor resisted the temptation to fool around with this minor chessplayer's bio A J Goldsby - and what greater seduction could exist? Yet, the player biography was never the problem, well, even the only thing connected to this minor chessplayer to never cause trouble and become a major distraction to everyone.

I hope you created a back-up file for your bios, as <twinlark> suggested to me. Then you needn't live in fear any longer.

jessicafischerqueen: <Karpova> thank you, nowadays I do in fact have backups and backups of backups of every single thing I ever made or wrote on the internet. The backups are on different devices in a series of different locations.

Particularly my chess file, which is topping 600 gigabytes of material now. I'd be rather horrified to lose that one. I even have that file backed up in two separate countries.

Did you know that <Switch> has this entire site logged and filed?

I don't know how he did it. I also don't know if it's actually true.

But I suspect it may well be the case.

It's hard for me to guess what his occupation might be.

Professional chess player? Computer programmer? Roller coaster operator?

It's yet another in a long series of mysteries at this website.

Anyways I agree that our biographers are among the most honorable people you could ever have the pleasure to work with. They love chess history too much to mess around with it.

Aug-30-13  Karpova: <jess>

That's really a great mystery. Perhaps he keeps track of our every movement or even works for the NSA? He may keep all of this for future generations. Does he update his log file every day? It would be sad, if some of <LMAJ>'s incredibly precious output should be lost - it's our duty to preserve this treasure of humankind - this outstanding creative effort, this paradigm of human intellect - for our children and children's children!

Daniel really chose the biographers wisely!

jessicafischerqueen: Well <Switch waters run deep> that's not at issue.

What I worry about is this- how long has any chess website lasted so far?

We have 300 year old books carrying precious chess lore.

It's not that I think the internet won't last another 300 years- rather, it's the potential turnover that worries me.

Websites are typically owned and operated by a single individual.

This, by definition, makes any chess website precarious, at least compared to the multi person, multi generation institutional guardianship we get with the traditional "library."

I wonder what <Phony Benoni> might think about this.

Aug-30-13  Karpova: <jess>

You fear that <chessgames.com> could cease to exist and all of the work be lost?

Even if so, the content is often stored somewhere else and can be retrieved - after all, the web never forgets.

<Websites are typically owned and operated by a single individual.>

But is this true for <chessgames.com>?

jessicafischerqueen: <Karpova> well yes, kind of, though we only have imperfect knowledge.

Daniel and his partner were the sole owners, but his partner sold his share of the site a few years ago.

My point is yes- of course all websites can cease to exist and all the work lost, because they lack the institutional organization, both synchronic and diachronic, that a library enjoys.

Especially libraries associated with universities.

Aug-30-13  Karpova: <jess>

For sure, this site may not last forever, but I'm positive that all of this get regularly saved. So in the future, if our worst nightmares come true, we will "only" not be able to contribute new work to it.

<Phony Benoni>

I agree with you, it's just that always someone answers. Whistling is preferable, no doubt, even if it kills of an (off-topic) discussion.

Regarding the new technology and so on, I hope that <chessgames.com> will adapt well enough to stay relevant. They still have the huge trump of having become a brand in such a niche with a lot of regular users.

Aug-30-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Jess here's 3 video's of John Lennon's 1st son Julian. He made the big time in the music world in the mid 80's. He had problems with drugs and is making music on and off again but never recaptured his fame of the mid 80's. Julian looks a lot like John especially as a young man and his vocal sound is very similar!
