Sep-22-13  Karpova: Just had a look at Lasker-Capablanca World Championship Match (1921)

The <challenge> in 1911 that takes up such a large part - this was not even Capablanca's challenge! Paredes suggested the match prior to San Sebastian, Capablanca waited for 7 months after his success in Spain, before he challenged Dr. Lasker. This way, the narrative makes no sense - Dr. Lasker declines Paredes challenge and out of the blue, several months later he publishes his own conditions for a match with Capablanca?

<In the decade that followed, Capablanca took the chessworld by storm> - really? After 1911, he came in 2nd in St. Petersburg 1914 and then World War I broke out! No doubt about Capablanca's strength around 1920 and his standing in the chess world, though.

And the matter of Dr. Lasker's resignation is also only shortly dealt with. After all, Capablanca still had to challenge him before he decided to resign and he probably knew that Capablanca would want to play. After all, his financial demands were absurdly high. Where does the "challenger" get 55% of the purse of $20,000 and still demands more?

Akiva is completely left out, as is most of the huge controversy about the 1911 conditions.

Sorry for the chess history rant...

Heads up for the new, improved Foyle and Sam back by popular demand. Now they are fighting the evil Commies and 5th columnists and such. Kitchen Sink is as engaging as ever.

Oh, and take a gander at the very sweet Last Tango in Halifax. I love dramas that have something to say about human nature. Brother Cadfael has put down his cowl to take up after an old school flame. The acting is as good as it gets on the telly.

ahhhh

What a fascinating history of The Great 'Senor Wences'.

How did you happen to know so much about him? Can you find the link again and repost the video you chose?

hehe I don't think Pete knew about "Hybrid Nut Monkey Theory" yet. It's a great track to be sure, a monster video hit for him.

Thanks for pointing it out to me. I suppose it's the strings that make it Disco.

"Light Funk" or "Heavy Disco"?

Sep-24-13  Jim Bartle: "How to Write Satire"...Just brutal.

One passage seems to refer to chessgames, though there may be others:

"To keep your name in public view at a level commensurate with your abilities, join a discussion or kibitzer group, posing as an expert. Bask in the fulsome praise of naïve pseudonymous posters who ask you patsy questions. If unnaïve pseudonymous posters criticize you, denounce the use of pseudonyms. Exploit such a forum for what it is: an ideal locale for vendettas against adversaries who are not members. When launching polemics, in any outlet, intimate that it is your opponent who is launching polemics and that you are an innocent victim. If you have made defamatory remarks about somebody, whether hot-headedly or by cold design, never apologize. Go silent and hope that everything will blow over."

OhioChessFan: <Report that your views are endorsed by an ‘eminent professor’ or a ‘leading championship challenger’. No names are needed, or need even exist. Say too that you have been inundated with e-mail messages of support.>

NN-1 has for sure adopted that technique.

Sep-25-13  Karpova: For sure, it is a very accurate description. Although in case of <chessgames.com>, it goes even further than <If unnaïve pseudonymous posters criticize you, denounce the use of pseudonyms.> as the author does have the power to delete the posts on his player page. And this is what he will do, a short time after posting an excuse of the <blame your publisher, co-author (if any), proof-reader (if any) or underling.> type.
