jessicafischerqueen: Your over there regimen sounds salubrious! Interestingly, in Canada we save time by spelling "music and poker" as "moker." Initially we spelled it "poomus" but that sounded a little too declasse, even for us...

Oct-27-13  Abdel Irada: Excuse my incomprehension, but that acronym is unfamiliar. Does it mean anything more than "email"?

  WCC Editing Project: <Abdel>

I'm not sure who started calling them EMUs, but I think mainly it was because it sounds like "email."

Only later did it dawn on me that it might be an ironic appellation, because emails "fly" really fast to the destination, whilst the poor EMU has to walk slowly to the destination.

Oct-27-13  Abdel Irada: I was under the impression that emus could run fairly fast.

Oct-27-13  dakgootje: <I was under the impression that emus could run fairly fast.>

They tend to tire after the first 1000 miles.

Oct-27-13  The Last Straw: (Sorry I don't know where to post this) It's great to see a resolution between TheFocus and AJ. If this is real, then I'm glad that this kind of relationship can come to such a great ending. I hope this is the end of the disagreement and that both have no more problems on this site.

I'm sorry I spoke so roughly to you.

I miss you already, and I hope you come back.

Oct-28-13  MarkFinan: Yeah, Shout outs to Mr B. Come back quickly, old foci needs some guidance he's lost his mind and had the chessgames dot com equivalent to a Britney Spears style head shaving meltdown, haha... I have to laugh, for a word without laughter is like a broken pencil..... pointless 😃

Props to Edmund Blackadder for the broken pencil "gag" ;)

Annie K.: <Jess> a totally off topic note on something that occurred to me recently... How do you feel about Michails Tals - compatriot of Vladimirs Petrovs? I'm afraid spelling consistency should be considered. :s

jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> Here's what I think about the matter of consistency in the case of the two masters you mention.

With a name that is super famous and established- <Mikhail Tal>- that's what we're stuck with forever, inaccurate or not.

In the case of <Vladimirs Petrovs>- consigned to obscurity by Soviet injustice- his Latvian spelling is s symbolic part of his ongoing rehabilitation, preferred by the three people who brought him back into public awareness:

<Andris Fride, his Wife, and his grandson Vladimir Dedkov>.

As for Cg.com official name spellings, I guess we have to keep <Mikhail Tal> and <Vladimir Petrov>, because that's what every other database calls them. If we were the only database who changed it to <Vladimirs Petrovs>, we would, ironically, help plunge him even deeper into internet and historical obscurity.

As a point of interest, here is how Jeremy Gaige lists <Mikhail Tal> in his "Chess Personalia":

<Tal, Mikhail
Latvian: Tals, Mihails>

And here is how Gaige lists <Vladimirs Petrovs>:

<Petrovs, Vladimirs
var. Petrov, Vladimir Mikhailovich>

Actually you know what, I just checked <chess 365> and they are using <Vladimirs Petrovs>.

Do you think we should also? What do you think?

Annie K.: Well, my initial reaction would be 'Not unless you want to reestablish Latvian spelling for all other Latvian players too, up to and maybe including Tal(s).

Then again, maybe this is a case of 'personal preference' (well, the preference of surviving next of kin, but close enough...), comparable to Alekhine's personal distaste for the common spelling of his name, and insistence on not being called 'Alyokhin' - which choice *is* widely respected.

As the arguments for both sides are roughly of equal strength, perhaps the deciding factor may be the question of by which name people would be looking for him...

Annie K.: And yet another subject, since we are fortunate enough to have Mr. Pope posting here, maybe you could try asking him if he knows anything about what became of HNP's wife? I've been tempted to ask myself, but it's 'your baby'... :)

Oct-28-13  MarkFinan: Is Robed. Bishop a woman? I'd rather know now, I don't want to make her cry. If it's a bloke, and he's been shoving his humourless little snout into my affairs then I think he's fair game? If you know then let me know please.
Oct-29-13  playground player: <jessicafischerqueen> Are we getting our just desserts? I didn't get where I am today by wondering about getting our just desserts.

That's true, but only so long as Spiro (vide Gerald Durrell, _My Family and Other Animals_) isn't involved.

Oct-29-13  Abdel Irada: Would desserts sweetened with Aspartame be considered just?

Annie K.: <AI> count me very firmly in the Gerald Durrell camp - wonderful writing, both warm and hilarious. I've read most of his books, if not all, over and over. :)

PS - just desserts are no good. Finish your vegetables first. ;p

Oct-29-13  Abdel Irada: I haven't read *all* of them, but I very much enjoyed those of them that I did happen to get hold of as a child, around 12-13 years old (and still enjoy re-reading them to this day). Much of my love of animals, ethology and "naturalism" traces to that experience.

Annie K.: Gerry Durrell certainly qualifies as a great teacher of values. :)

BTW, just in case you missed 'Rosy Is My Relative' - one of his rare novels (as opposed to the numerous 'autobiographical episodes') - try to find it if/when you can. But be warned that several days of suffering sore sides is a guaranteed side effect!

Oct-30-13  Boomie: One important consideration in the great Tal(s) kerfuffle is that my initials are TAL. If we add an "S" to Tal, I'll have to marry a Smith to maintain my status.

<Is Robed. Bishop a woman?>

I have no information about this. I have been assuming he is a man because he is a bishop?

Do they have women bishops nowadays?

Possibly he isn't a real bishop, but his avatar is a "bishop" avatar...

lol

All the best,
