Wow- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4N...
You are right about this, it's exquisite. I like the "fractals" as well, perhaps suitably mathematical. Harmony, harmony. I had never heard this before but I am a big Bach fan. I have a hefty collection of "string pieces" by him, but not as much piano. Also he was so prolific who can keep track? Just lovely, and even more lovely to hear from you.
I hope all is well. |

| May-03-14 | | achieve: <Jess> Glad to hear this was much to your liking, and you characterizing it as "exquisite" is - of course - fitting, exquisitely appropriate and all that, because the Old Bach was a master at his craft that we haven't seen since, barring perhaps a few exceptions. He is the absolute master of moving the harmony in various directions, delicately most of the time, barely noticeable, but as with this piece in G-minor, it sways and dances almost, a noble dance, into various new keys, modulates towards them, and ties it together with an almost perfection-seeking steady hand... Ironic is that JS Bach himself wrote these little "studies" for his students to improve their technique, the legato and cantabile touch, and to "interest the student in the art/craft of composition." So here in the 20th century, we were all writing books on how not a single note can be altered with these gems of musical literature, another often coined term, but Bach simply wrote this in mostly an improv way, for his students for several purposes, one of which was for them to assimilate the material, AND COMPOSE THEMSELVES, PLAY AROUND WITH IT! In fact using it as an example, a launch pad if you will into perhaps even more complex weaving of lines, perhaps even 4 or 5-part voicings, after they mastered of course the 2-and-3 part inventions, could play the pieces in all 12 keys, and just be given a theme and instantly start playing and coloring like we hear in these 2- and 3-part inventions. THAT was his intention, not that we diligently kept repeating his notes to eternity, but play them to start mastering an idiom and write musical stories ourselves! Not all of his work was suited nor needed approached like that of course, but a large portion is very much suited for the aforementioned purpose. Unfortunately Classical Music is being approached in this way, which already very testing and fine, but there is another creative aspect and drive and incentive that has gone lost mostly, as we are left with only "performers" of written music from a time where many were virtuoso players, improvisors, and thus composers..... You just had to go to the trouble, like eg Chopin, who - after he had performed at a smallish aristocrat gathering and reached virtuoso heights and musical ideas - had to go back home to write it down, which he found extremely hard, because the well of the real-time playing had mostly dried up, the source, the well-spring, and if only he had recording gear to his disposal we would have had an even greater oevre of some of the most brilliant piano playing in the history of music! I always get excited when writing about this... My hero Oscar Peterson said that already at quite a young age he wanted to play a number of selections differently, follow his own creative thoughts, needs, and I will close with the Master's own simple way of putting things concisely. "I soon found that I was a <player>, not an interpreter." -OP |

LOVE the "Sunny and Cher."
Prompted by the songs you posted, I read up a bit on them. I found that Sonny used to wear "hidden high heels" and forced Cher to wear "low heels" so that she wouldn't look taller than him on TV. Also, he is now a politician. He is currently the King of England. If I'm not mistaken.
That "I got you babe" is simply wonderful though. I love Cher. Her smile always seems a little sarcastic. Here is a cover of "I got you babe" By Chrissie Hynde and UB40: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aP4... |

| May-06-14 | | Thanh Phan: Russian Internet ‘One Step Away’ From Chinese Firewall Roskomnadzor currently blocks access to 2,132 websites, but at least 56,000 more are blocked only because they share an IP address with the one on the blacklist. Roskomnadzor is the main Russian agency responsible for executing the recently passed legislation regulating the Internet. Since Feb. 1, when the new anti-extremism legislation came into force, Russian prosecutors have blocked access to about 100 websites, including some that called for protests over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Interfax reported Monday. Last week, the State Duma passed in its second reading a bill that will oblige bloggers to register as online media if they have more than 3,000 visitors per day. In addition, legislators want to require social networks – including foreign ones such as Twitter and Facebook – to keep their servers i n Russia and store users’ information for at least six months. http://russialist.org/russian-inter... |

| May-07-14 | | Shams: <jfq> <<Tim Curry> heh... I hadn't heard that track thanks. I like him and especially Rocky Horror which I saw once in Toronto. This is my favorite track from that movie: "There's a light..."> My favorite is the opening track, "Science Fiction Double Feature", with creator Richard O'Brien on vocals. In kind of a reverse-lip synch, Patricia Quinn ("Magenta") sang the song at first; but to her horror O'Brien snatched it away, leaving only her disembodied mouth on screen. Objectively, though, I think the final medley is the high water mark. Great songwriting! In college I saw it enough to last several lifetimes. It's in the past now but I still think of it fondly. UND MY LIFE...WILL BE LIVED...FOR ZE THRILLS! |
