| Jun-29-14 | | Boomie: <Jessongster: The Boxer> I hate it when people correct my posts but I can't resist here because "The Boxer" is very close to my heart and I can't bear any variation. And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down or cut him
'Til he cried out <in his anger and his shame> I am leaving, I am leaving
But the <fighter> still remains The real funny part is I just realize I've been singing this verse wrong. Funnier still, I think my version is better...heh. And he carries the reminders
Of every <blow> that laid him <low> I like that internal rhyme. That's my inner Poe struggling to get out. |

| Jun-29-14 | | Boomie: <Sweet Jessie Jane> Double Jinx!
I was enjoying the "Rock n Roll Animal" version of this classic a couple of days ago. It has one of the best guitar intros ever. The two guitarists are Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. Sweet Jane was originally done by Lou Reed's "The Velvet Underground", which was a wonderful group that included John Cale. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FdW... |

<Tim Honored Traditions> I have all the <Velvet Underground> records including a fine double live set "over time." Best $0.00 I ever spent (cough). "But the pension fund was just sitting there."
<John Cale> of course is a genius who liked to work with other geniuses, such as <Brian Eno's Fruit Salts> here in this genre-defying track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYvX...
Speaking of "singing it the way you want to," even though this fine track is called "Catapult," I always sing "Cat afloat!
Caaaat afloat!"

<Tim> That is indeed a great version of
"Sweet Jane" from <Rock and Roll Animal>, and a great band. If I'm not mistaken, this is the very band of which you speak- this live performance must be from the tour in support of the record: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc26... |

| Jun-29-14 | | Boomie: <Jessie Jane>
"Rock 'n' Roll Animal" was recorded live at a music academy in NYC. The Paris concert appears to have one guitarist who I think is Steve Hunter but I'm not sure. BTW - Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter went on to play with Peter Gabriel (who praised Steve Hunter's work on "Solsbury Hill") and Alice Cooper among others. While we are memorializing Lou Reed (he died last year), we would be remiss to omit his super cool hit. It's a tribute of sorts to Andy Warhol's inner circle. "And the colored girls sing doo, doo-doo..."

| Jun-29-14 | | thegoodanarchist: <Boomie: <Jessongbird: This fine Paul Simon song...> Simon is one of the 4 great folk song writers.> I was a child during the late '70s when my home town of Louisville, KY experienced a couple of brutal Winters in a row, '77 and '78. At least, they were brutal compared to our normal Winters. If I recall correctly, it was in '78 when we got about 18 inches of snow from one storm and schools were closed for a couple of weeks. Every night on the local news, as the state-wide school & business closures were shown on the screen, they played "Slip Slidin' Away" To this day, I cannot hear that song without thinking about how great it was to be out of school for weeks at a time! https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#... |

| Jun-29-14 | | Shams: <Boomie> <Simon is one of the 4 great folk song writers. He is every bit as good as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Leonard Cohen. And he's a fine guitar player.> I agree on the first three, but as much as I love Leonard Cohen there's no way you can leave Neil Young off folk music's Mt. Rushmore! |
|
| Jun-29-14 | | Boomie: <Shams: Neil Young> With the given that all lists are bogus, I would classify Young as a rocker, not a folkster. However I did play some of his early songs like "Sugar Mountain" which are folk songs. A second point is that Young came after the others and was influenced by them. One could go back further and mention Lead Belly as the father of them all. I suppose there is no end to that as it's the heart of the folk process. |
|
| Jun-29-14 | | Shams: <Boomie> I can see your point. His folk stuff is so superb though that maybe he could qualify in both categories. If you just look at lyrics I think Leonard Cohen is in a class of his own. Pretty subjective though; not everyone shares my capacity for navel-gazing. |

I did indeed see "Under the Skin" and I'm going to have to give it <two bums up>. At first I was so irritated by a scenario I just knew was never going to be explained (and it wasn't) I almost deleted the film. However, I stuck with it and I'm glad I did.
<Scarlet O' Hara's> best performance to date, in my view- especially given that over half of the film requires her to show no real emotions. A tour de force for her, deserving of an <OSCAR DE LA HOYA>. Also, at first I thought they had added some "FX padding" to her, but then after a bit of research I discovered she had "pulled a Robert DeNiro." Yes, <Ms. Johannsseonn> deliberately gained 50 pounds just to play this role. Possibly <Ingmar Johannsen> fans may tell me if she has subsequently lost the weight. Remember when the great <Charlize Theron> had her head surgically removed and replaced with a really ugly head for the underrated film "Monster," and then they botched the re-attachment? This is the kind of commitment that I can really respect in actresses, I can tell you. |
