Great playlist <B.O.>. I hadn't heard that Peter Gabriel, and that's one of my favorite Elton John tracks.

Good quality on the Elton song too I'm playing it on "1080 pee" setting brah.

I'm wondering if you watched the recent round of UCL matches?

So far I've watched Arsenal, Man United and Man City go in the tank. Why do the English clubs recently have such difficulty in European competition, including last year as well?

I know it's early days but these are three of the best sides in England and I expected much, much more from them.

However I still hold hope for the Chelsea-Maccabee match and also the Tottenham and Liverpool matches in the UEL, which I haven't seen yet.

Most exciting European players for me this season, heavily influenced by club loyalty:

Douglas Costa (Bayern Munich)
Bafferabffefertfetibi Gomis (Swansea)
Gareth Bale (R-Madrid, back in form)
Harry Kane (England!)
Jack Grealish (Villa- goaaaaal!)

EPL Goal of the Season so far:

Anthony Martial (Man United, vs Liverpool)

harrylime: Jess your question why do English clubs have such difficulty in European competition is being asked by many in the game here ...

I watched Arsenal lose tonight at home to a Greek team and Chelsea lost too I believe ... At the mo I've gotta say the EPL is being over hyped ...

You could say ..

The EPL is being over hyped becuase most of the clubs involved are owned by global investers who want a return thru marketing ect ect ..

or you could say English football is behind a few trends in Europe just now and needs to catch up ..

Derby County!

EPL in Europe: Is there anything to what many commentators say about the pressure to perform at home being too great to commit necessary resources to UEFA games?

I noticed Liverpool sent what was likely the saddest lineup in modern football history to their European encounter.

You don't see Bayern Munich or Barcelona sending "light squads" to any UEFA matches eh?

I think maybe the EPL teams are closer to parity than other leagues, so there may be something to this "too tough at home" idea.

On a semi-related point though- the manager is the potential weak link to this "throw billions at the squad" strategy.

Bayern Munich has deep pockets, but not deeper than Man City/United or Chelsea or a few other EPL clubs who disappoint in UEFA competition.

But Bayern has "Peppy" Gardiola.

Man United has Louis You've Got a Lot of Gall.

They are top of the table now in EPL standings but I say they have zero chance to advance to a significant placing in the UCL tournament.

Why? Van Gall's brand of football is safe and boring. You can't win with this "pass the ball out with thousands of tiny little passes, get it through the midfield with tiny little passes, and then walk the ball into the net" style against serious opposition.

You heard it here first: Manchester United never wins the EPL title with Van Gall at the helm. And they certainly don't with the UCL tournament.

<Hozza>

If you could put your "dream 11" on the pitch right now, drawing from any currently active players, who would be in your lineup, and why?

I'm running a "fantasy football" contest with my students, so I'm in the process of picking my "dream 11" at the moment.

  harrylime: Ha !

I'm sooooo glad you're back !

Pressure to perform at home is a myth Jess re EPL failures in Europe. ... Arsenal needs Euro glory .. So does Chelsea .. Manu .. These clubs rate their value in European success more than domestic success now I think.

If anything you could argue the EPL has fractured into clubs who are looking to Europe and clubs who are just looking to survive.

Agree re Van Gaal ...

Man Citeh are the biggest disapointments for the EPL tho .. ALL that money ... and they have no impact upon Europe .

Sep-29-15  Black Ops: I'm glad you liked the song Jess.
