<Hozza> Yes my prediction that Russia would beat Croatia came true! I like Johnny Cash and I never heard this track thanks mate. I did see a Johnny Cash impersonator at a Casino last month- my Mom wanted to go. Not bad the guy was pretty good. I just watched <Belgium-France> and I was forced to cheer for Belgium since they started four Tottenham players (if you count <Chadli>), while France only started one. As usual my math had me on the wrong side of the result. Good game though- <Vincent Kompany> man of the match for Belgium, for me. He's still got it- too bad about how injuries wrecked around two years of his footy but he is back now. |

Agree re Kompany.
France just uber organised ... nothing really magical or special but they are getting it together as a collective ... They beat Belgium thru organisation alone .. just proves it's a team game.. France are favourites for me now. |

| Jul-10-18 | | harrylime: Itz cool trying to think of THE song which for you is quintessential and just embodies that decade .. It's all so personal I guess .. For me this IS the 80's .. ( tho I may reconsider !) Thompson Twins - Love on Your Side

I remember hitting indie clubs in the 80's walking down smoke filled cobbled alleyways (no idea what the smoke was lol lol ) with this song blasting out ... this or a New Order song ! |

| Jul-12-18 | | thegoodanarchist: <technical draw:
Sorry <diceperson> but this is the 21st century my father warned me about.> You cannot say "father" anymore. You have to say "primary male parent". You cannot just say my "male parent" because you could be discriminating against your other male parent, if you are the child in a gay marriage family. Unless, of course, your other male parent is approved for gender reassignment surgery. Then you can call your father your "male parent" or even better (more approved) is to call him "my soon to be sole male parent". Now if you also have a pet parrot, it gets trickier. |
|
| Jul-12-18 | | thegoodanarchist: Now what do you call the other male parent in the gay marriage family? I'm glad you asked. This person is referred to as "my male feminine parent." But if he/she has had partial gender reassignment surgery, and has already been scheduled for the completion, then he is now a combination of male and female. He/she can be addressed using the merger of the male and female symbols for gender/sex, or simply "the parent formerly known as Prince." |

| Jul-12-18 | | thegoodanarchist: Where do I get my information, you ask/
I read it all in a book... that I am writing.... so it must be true! |

Thanks <doggimus> if you remember it was you who told me to buy the <Petrovs> biography 7 years ago. I am currently working on a chess history documentary about <Petrovs>, but it's difficult to get even basic facts correct, as you can see. Luckily <hemy> is a godsend with his ability to read Latvian/German magazines and articles, not to mention find them in the first place. |

Thanks <Tigga>- even though I just finished watching England surrender 3rd place to Belgium, I am not too sad about them. At least they finished 4th.
Much more frustrating to me is this- Virtually the entire starting <Tottenham> lineup capped for England, Belgium and France. The worst those countries can finish is 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Probably be 1st, 3rd and 4th. So why can these same <Tottenham> players not win a single piece of hardware. Nothing. Not one trophy and they have had almost the same starting lineup for the last three years. This past season was much the most frustrating. <West Ham> even knocked them out of the least impressive trophy, the <EFL Cup>, which was embarrassingly, and unaccountably, renamed to the <Gay Caballero Cup> or some such. Possibly England thought "EFL" wasn't "ethnic" enough to suit their new ultra- social justice warrior "say no to racism" pose. I wonder how long until there is some pushback?
Maybe that won't happen until they change the <FA Cup> to <The Osama Bin Laden Memorial Cup>. Horrifyingly, I'm not even kidding. |

<Hozza> I love <Bowie> as well, though my favorite is not from the 80s. I like <Hunky Dory> the best and this track best from that record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmk... Especially I like the lyrics, which result from <Bowie's> tussle with Nietszche and German Expressionism, particularly Kracauer's "From Caligari to Hitler." "I'm living in a silent film,
Portraying Himmler's sacred realm
Of dream reality,
I'm frightened by the total goal,
Drawing to the ragged hole,
And I ain't got the power anymore..." |

| Jul-14-18 | | Boomie: As a bit of a Bowie groupie, I second the motion of the Canadian representative. Although I missed the Spider tour stop in Seattle, which led to a song on Aladdin Sane (Drive In Saturday), I saw him during his Philly Funk period (songs like Fame). His lyrics indicate an extensive reading experience. He said he would a scramble a few words he wanted in a line to produce novel arrangements. That was the influence of Dada. I think Bowie, like many artists, reveled in happy accidents. Dada is designed to produce them. The lyrics for Quicksand are indeed extraordinary. He threw a bit of everything in the mix. There is even a reference to the Tibetan Book of the Dead. This lyric which neatly describes humility inspired me: Don't believe in yourself.
Don't deceive with belief.
People who believe they are right bring evil into the world. The Nazis, Communists, and uncountable numbers of warring religions have all brought misery into the world. May they all rot with their beliefs. |

<Tim> Yes Bowie was a polymath and every bit as deserving as Dylan for the Nobel Prize for literature. I recently watched an excellent documentary about <Bowie> and what impressed me most was his performance as "The Elephant Man" for the stage- they showed clips from this performance. He did it with no makeup of any kind- rather, he affected contortions and a speech impediment. I thought John Hurt was impressive with the makeup, but this was even more impressive. I wish I had access to a film of the entire performance. Here is an inspired bit of art to help prove your points, Bowie as a mystical clown in this case. I regard 99.999999999% of all "music videos" to be crud, bad almost beyond comprehension. Not this video though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMT... |
|
| Jul-14-18 | | Boomie: Nice clown vid.
Ashes to Ashes is one of his best songs musically. I'm happy.
Hope you're happy, too.
Another aspect of Bowie's art that I love is an enduring optimism about the human condition. Things may be down now but they are getting better. Even his aliens have our best interests at heart. There's a Starman waiting in the sky.
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'll blow our minds.
There's a Starman waiting in the sky.
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile.
...
Let all the children boogie. |

| Jul-14-18 | | Tiggler: <jess> Could be worse. Last time Engulund won their line up was full of Wets Ham players blowing bubbles. At least they can have a nice mixed grill and a cuppa when they gets back to blighty. |
