| Jul-14-18 | | Tiggler: When I was an incubus attending parties in London, it would often happen that the party would be crashed by skinheads. They would have with them their supply of tinnies, which they closely guarded, and their records. Just as a revolutionary army would immediately seize the radio station, these commandos would take control of the record player. And their playlist: Otis Redding, club ska and reggie, Jimmie Hendrix. Go figure. |

<Tigga> By "reggie" do you mean music by <Reggie Mantle> used in the TV series "Riverdale" which is based on the Archie Comics? I had no idea he was a skinhead, but now that I think about it... |

<Tim> Good selection I also love "Starman." Like so many Bowie compositions it has a strong, anthemic melody, making it ideal for tone deaf folks to sing in the shower. Here is some rare 1972 live footage of Bowie on THERES A STAR MAN WAITING IN THE SKY in fine form I must say: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJO... |

<The Good Anteater> I was just doing some genealogically research on the internets and I was intrigued to find that many of the earth's place names derive from your people. Antwerp, Antarctica, and the Antlantic Ocean, just to name three. |

<Tim> Here is one of your most brilliant neighbors, who grew up not far from <Puyallup>. Towards the woods, not the sea. He liked Bowie too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fre... |

| Jul-15-18 | | Boomie: <Jessie: it has a strong, anthemic melody> Oh, you pretty thing...
I suspect that Mick Ronson had a lot to do with the music. He was a terrific lead guitarist. He never showed off unless the song called for it. Bowie composed by committee. He was eager to hear what his band mates thought and blended their ideas into his music. Mike Garson, the pianist who played that terrific solo on Aladdin Sane said: "I had told Bowie about the avant-garde thing. When I was recording the "Aladdin Sane" track for Bowie, it was just two chords, an A and a G chord, and the band was playing very simple English rock and roll. And Bowie said: 'play a solo on this.' I had just met him, so I played a blues solo, but then he said: 'No, that’s not what I want.' And then I played a latin solo. Again, Bowie said: 'No no, that’s not what I want.' He then continued: 'You told me you play that avant-garde music. Play that stuff!' And I said: 'Are you sure? ‘Cause you might not be working anymore!'. So I did the solo that everybody knows today, in one take. I always tell people that Bowie is the best producer I ever met, because he lets me do my thing." |

| Jul-15-18 | | crawfb5: Had a Korean Airlines jet fly over me at the beach earlier today. If you wanted to know what I was doing, all you had to do was ask. :-) |
|
| Jul-15-18 | | Boomie: <Jessie: Here is one of your most brilliant neighbors...> Yes. I believe Cobain was from Anacortes, a suburb of the Greater Puyallup Metropolitan Area. <The Man Who Sold the World> was the first Bowie album that I heard. Mick Ronson's haunting guitar riff on the title tune is wonderful. Long time producer Tony Visconti also plays on it. The song is a bit scary with the Gregorian like vocal choir. Bowie explored fear occasionally, for example, with the Bewlay Brothers on Hunky Dory. |

<Big> heh... I hope you weren't at the beach in Guam. That wasn't a good place for a Korean jet, if you catch my drift. I'm afraid to fly, though I did a lot of flying. Perversely, a few months before a flight I would be sure to bone up on the latest episodes of <Mayday: Air Disaster> on youtube. |

<Tim> I watched a lot of documentaries about <Kurt Cobain>, which is very different than remembering what actually happened in a lot of documentaries about <Kurt Cobain>. I do remember the one I thought was the best- <The Last 48 Hours of Kurt Cobain (2007)> https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0989019/ I was trying to remember the name of the town he grew up in, but my memory refused to "steer" me in the right direction. Imagine my surprise when I googled it to find he grew up in <Aberdeen>! <Bowie> had plenty of dark side, in his music and his life. A well rounded lad if there ever was one, in my view. Anyways I always loved him. I loved <Kurt Cobain> too. |

<Tim> I've longed hoped there would one day be a "chess horror movie" since apparently I seem to be interested only in chess and horror. There is only one, to my knowledge- an excellent French Canadian film in which a kindly father has a secret hobby- he murders people and mummifies them as chess pieces in his basement. His goal is to complete the set of 32. This is the movie: 5150 rue des Ormes (2009) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt133129... |

<diceman> Most clever! I only got your pun after several viewings: *A player whipped is half beaten* whipped = beaten, as in eggs and such.

| Jul-17-18 | | harrylime: Yo <JFQ> !
Cool to see a bit of Bowie discussion in this "Lawn Darts Club" lol I'd much rather discuss the great David than the England football team just now ! I'm still getting over that limp, naff, bottling display against the Croats. lol some predictions for next seasons' footy tho..
Spurs will win some silverware . But I don't know what. Magic Frank's Durrby Counteh will get a knees Oooooop into the promised land. The heatwave here is affecting my crystal ball and it's gone all hazy, so I'll get back to you with some more predictions later when it gets a little cooler here. Oh and hope all well with you. |

<Tim> Yes <Alexander Pikachu> I saw this documentary aboot him here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVy... I didn't see the <COLOMBO> episode aboot chess but I did watch a good vloguumentary aboot <Peter Falk>. He was loved by many, a real mensch, apparently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs5... I like this "Jordan the Lion" vlogger quite a bit. Actually he is the only vlogger I like. Ok he is the only vlogger I ever saw, but I watch a lot of his videos. |

<Hozza> Ok I'm on board, no fun being a footy fan if we can't dream. <Spurs> get hardware and <Saint Frank Lampard> promotes DARBY! I actually liked this world cup a lot better than last time. The refs were on <Neymar's> side this time, instead of letting everyone chop him down like a tree like they did four years ago. Funny that England finished 2nd in their group but got a fantastically easy draw out of it, whilst Belgium had a much, much harder draw eh? England got to play Sweden! Not that there's anything wrong with Sweden. |

<Hozza> I think "Heroes" is the best love song ever written. Dramatic, but utterly without pretension. <Bowie> was as good as it gets, and then some. |
