Just saying like ....

Jul-30-18  Boomie: I consider Joni Mitchell to be every bit as great as the three other masters of folk: Dylan, Cohen, and Simon. In addition to writing some great songs, she was innovative on the guitar, using more than 40 different tunings. She is listed as one of the top 100 guitarists by Rolling Stone. Her singing style influenced a generation of jazz singers.

Jul-30-18  crawfb5: Elton John does <Daniel> at the Actor's Studio in response to a request from a student remembering a lost friend:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFJ...

When we first started doing the WCC project, I think I told Daniel that, while I was no HTML guru, I did know the difference between a burro and a burrow, and could probably help with the HTML markup, easing the load on him a bit. He didn't quite know what I meant, and I explained the (possibly? probably? apocryphal) story of the press agency's style handbook that read in part: "A <burro> is an ass. A <burrow> is a hole in the ground. As a reporter, you are expected to know the difference." Daniel hadn't heard the story before and found it quite funny.

<Ohio> Having read the posts by <Sargon>, <Switch>, <crawfb5 (Big)>, and especially <AnnieK>, I'm revising my alarm about cg.com becoming extinct.

I don't think that will happen. We don't know what provisions <Daniel> made, but I'm sure he made some. Clearly his friends are more than capable, and I believe they are willing to step up, given the chance.

But mainly I feel like I have lost a limb. <Daniel> treated me not like a member or a friend, he actually treated me like a daughter.

He shouldn't have had to- that was down to my immaturity and hysterical squawking over the years. But he did.

That was <Daniel> all over. Just last week he sent me a detailed email explaining (again) how to format a pgn for upload that will work most smoothly in the cg. upload protocol.

I never once heard "I already told you that before, and you should be able to figure it out on your own anyways!" from him.

Never, nothing like that.

I loved him. and speaking only for myself, the way I am feeling now is making me realize how much a father figure he was to me.

He was one of the nicest, most patient, and most genuine people I have ever had the privilege to know, and at the moment I feel gutted.

Those of us who care, a lot, may have to step up in another way. The finances of chessgames.com are not very solid, I imagine. Daniel kept it alive despite that by putting in very long hours for very low pay, so that he could pursue his dream and his self-asigned mission. He always resisted the idea of a subscription for all users, knowing that many would have to leave the site and that new blood would be more difficult to recruit.

From time to time I've seen premium members gripe about the so-called free-loaders who were getting most of the site benefits without paying.

I guess Daniel saw it differently: I think he viewed the premium membership as a way of letting the most active users who could afford it sponsor the site. Lord knows it is a very modest amount that we pay for that privilege. Some of us may have to consider what we might be willing to contribute to put the site on a more sound financial footing. That way the new owners, Daniel's heirs, may be less inclined to pull the plug.

In my town, there would be no performing arts, quality live music venues, museums, zoos, botanical gardens, or anything to raise the spirits without charitable donors. Their nominal reward is to get titles like Benefactor, Sponsor, Supporting Member etc.

If you and other influential long-standing members like <Ohio>, <AnnieK>, <YouRang>, <FSR>, and a dozen others (regardless of financial means) I could think of, think this is a worthwhile idea I would ask you to put it about and see if we can knock it into shape as a proposal to the site owners.

Aug-01-18  crawfb5: On this, my first day of vacation, I am about to drive up to my recently deceased mother in law's house to help prepare it for sale.

On the drive, I think I will listen to Miles Davis' <Kind of Blue>. Daniel once told me that it was not only Miles' best album, but it was <the> best album.

In memory still bright.

<Kind of Blue> is certainly the best <Jazz> album of all time, IMO.

I've heard it said that if you don't like <KOB> you just don't like the Jazz genre.

Think I will listen to it again tonight.

Is the best album of all? Well, I won't go that far. For me, <Abbey Road> is undoubtedly the most brilliant album in World History.

saffuna: I haven't listened to that many jazz albums, but "Kind of Blue" is certainly one of my favorites. "All Blues," "So What" and "Freddie" are especially great.

saffuna: That's OK. The comment got me to listen to it again after a couple of years.

My other favorites are Sonny Rollins (Saxophone Colussus), Coleman Hawkins (Body and Soul) and Bix Beiderbecke. As I said, I haven't listened to that much.

I also really Roland Kirk, who I saw play live several times.

Aug-05-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: <Is the best album of all? Well, I won't go that far. For me, <Abbey Road> is undoubtedly the most brilliant album in World History.>

I would say Revolver closely followed by Abbey road. As I type I'm listening to Abbey road :) When you've got some alone time put Revolver on <in the headphones> and I'll bet it blows your mind. On the 50th anniversary of the release of Revolver I said something similar to either twinlark or keypusher (can't remember) and whoever it was said they'd just listened to Revolver and they agreed - just every song is a classic :)

Aug-05-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: And the reason I say Revolver is better than Abbey road is because Lennon's songs on Abbey road are pretty average with the exception of Come together. On Revolver he truly keeps up with McCartney. I only skip Ringo's song.
Aug-05-18  rogge: <For me, <Abbey Road> is undoubtedly the most brilliant album in World History>

I have to admit I agree :)

moronovich: If I go to the bank and have forgot my
matser card I prefer revolver, but otherwise yes " Abbey Road " is more than a masterpiece.

And probably the best orchestrated coverphoto.

Aug-05-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: That photograph where they're all walking across the zebra crossing <wasn't> meant to look so perfect. It was a very lazy off the cuff photo shoot and only about 7 pics were taken. It was a complete no brainer to use that iconic photo because the others were pretty poor. It's definitely in my top 3 albums ever, it's very hard to rate Beatles albums.. They all sound so different (Apart from Rubber soul/Revolver). Greatest band ever by quite a distance.

saffuna: Probably nobody agrees with me, but I think once a records reach a certain very high quality, there's no need to put them in order. I could name fifty or so records I think are brilliant, and wouldn't want to put them in any order.

For example, a couple of days ago I listened to Delaney & Bonnie's first record, "Accept No Substitute." It's absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. I just don't see how to compare it with "Abbey Road" or "Who's Next" or "Let It Bleed."
