<The Wedge> Interesting, thank you. I have a "Norwegian Blue" brand cat, and I couldn't understand the noises she was making. Thanks to you, I now know she was <skrikking>! |
|
| Sep-06-18 | | Count Wedgemore: <jfq> Norwegian Blue? Wasn't that an old Monty Python gag, about a Parrot..? My daughter has two cats and one is a "Russian Blue", though. Fortunately I speak a little Russian, so we can communicate. |
|
| Sep-06-18 | | Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen> I see you've been kicking bottom on the apparently defunct Dismembered Whining Forum. Let's hope they can break through to the editors on the beach. I tried public service announcements early on but, perhaps, gave up too early. Let's see if sterner stuff will make a difference. Once again, I congratulate you on your new bidness, especially since it does not conflict with mine. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<The Wedge> (legendary MuchMusic feature) Yes the Russian Blue is also well known here in Norway, as well as in the Monty Python studio which I believe was located behind the pipes in the men's room at Finland Station. |

<Tim> Well there might be time for someone to make a good <Keres> bio. Like I said though, <Daniel> didn't direct any of the biographers. That wasn't part of the program. I doubt he could have directed biographers without paying them, to be honest. At any rate, we don't know what the next webmaster will look like, if there is indeed ever a next webmaster. If it all ended here tomorrow, and it still might- then the bio of <Paul Keres> might have to be satisfied with saying "I was unlucky. Like my website." |
|
| Sep-07-18 | | TheFocus: <thegoodanarchist: Dang it, <Tabanu>! I keep thinking you're <The Focus>. Then I wonder why the heck is <The Focus> writing this stuff?? Then I realize, it ain't him!>
If I buy a Premium membership, I will have to borrow <Tabanus>'s fly!! |
|
| Sep-07-18 | | TheFocus: <Count Wedgemore> <I, for one, am glad that my fellow countryman <Tabanus> has taken over that avatar. He has brought it home. No American should use that avatar, that is cultural appropriation! It is Norwegian property, the iconic 'Skrik' (The Scream) by famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch.> Hmmm. If you were a Brit, I might just think that you are <Lord Ramsbottom>!! There was a character!! <Wedgemore>? <Ramsbottom>? Confess, man! |
|
| Sep-07-18 | | TheFocus: <Count> <...cultural appropriation...> Ha! If it wasn't for me using it, no one would even know who he was!! |
|
Sep-07-18
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Oh hai <The Focus> Thanks for calling me out on the hypocrisy of my position today. I hadn't even noticed the contradiction between my main rant and then cautioning people to work on the <So> bio before we know what the new <webmaster policy> might be. I don't actually have any "nuts" myself, but I certainly know what you meant. As usual, if I had waited until my anger subsided before posting, I might have actually posted something other than a hissy fit that ended up contradicting itself. At any rate I appreciate you chiming in on the issue of <So biography> and supporting the cause of academic integrity at this website. I'm feeling pessimistic about cg.com future again. Who would even want to be a webmaster here? Who will pay for a webmaster? Who even owns this website? |

<TheFocus> If you take up the "fly of Tab" this would really stir up the pot. I think you should do it. |
|
Sep-07-18
 | | Tabanus: Yikes.
I would consider not to switch back then. I might be upset, but that would be only temporary :) |
|
| Sep-07-18 | | thegoodanarchist: <jess> in regards to your post in my forum, no worries at all. Truly. Go to sleep tonight with a clear conscience. As I said, I've done the same exact thing. Responded before reading the complete thread. It happens, and we are all human. And keep it quiet about the 10 years! (It might be 12 or more...) I don't feel that old. |
|
Sep-07-18
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<The Good Anteater> "12 or more" good heavens, I see what you mean. |
|
| Sep-07-18 | | thegoodanarchist: Anyway, as for me not helping out doing editorial work - Daniel never asked me to! I would have, if he had asked. I thought that maybe my style wasn't his cup of tea. That's all there is to that. |
|
| Sep-07-18 | | Big Pawn: I think that the general quality of the bios on this site are excellent. A few of them read like English Second Language, can't remember which ones right now, but the vast majority are very well written. My favorites are the old players from the 1700s-1800s. Some people here do a great job digging up historical facts and putting it all together. <Miss Scarlett> is really good in that department. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <Focus: If I buy a Premium membership, I will have to borrow <Tabanus>'s fly!!> Errr, are you talking about a premium membership to a men's club? |

Serendipity is my middle name. |

hahaha -- best laugh of a dreary day -- cheers, thanks a lot I see the last edit to the bio was a year ago. Like everything else around here, the odds of a "proper" revision are inversely related to the time and effort required to do so. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Big Pawn> I agree. You know who else is really strong on the "old days" chess history is <john barleycorn>. I remember I had just gotten ahold of a book on 19th century chess, and I was quoting from it around the bios. <jb> noticed and he pointed out a few howlers from the book. He also characterized the author as <"kind of like the Irish AJ Goldsby"> LOL I almost died laughing... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<The Good Anteater> I have no doubt of that. The funny thing is that I don't think <Daniel> ever sought someone out to ask them to become an editor. Maybe He did, but I never heard of that. |

<Errr, are you talking about a premium membership to a men's club?> heh... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Big> Thanks for the Simpson's Canada references! They are funny, but I prefer the South Park Canada references. They are more savage and more accurate. It's actually true that every Canadian says "aboot" and "eh?", and it's also true that Canada has only one of everything: "Canada Court House" "Canada Hockey Rink" and such. I actually thought of you when posted that because I know that is one of your favorite quotes- I heard it first from you. <Paul Keres>: "I was unlucky, like my country." |
|
| Sep-08-18 | | crawfb5: Glad I am still a sarcastic little voice in the back of your head. Btw, you should hear "cheers, thanks a lot" in Joanna Lumley's voice. Not to belittle Boomie's efforts to overcome inertia on Keres' bio, I must admit I do hear Helen Lovejoy saying, "Oh, won't somebody please think of the bios?" I do know <I> don't have the source material or the time to tackle a major rewrite. Any editor (you, I, others) could make modest changes in cases of errors or omissions, but I don't think minor improvements are what are envisioned. Speaking of time, I am currently engaged in negotiations with the Spousal Overunit regarding retirement. No firm target date yet, but sometime before the end of year, I should think. It can't come a day too soon. "Management" (if I may use the term loosely) has no clue, nor will I give them any. You don't call up Pearl Harbor and say, "We're thinking of a surprise attack, is a Sunday morning in December good for you?" Anyway, looking forward to the day I can tell them, "So long and thanks for all the fish." |
|
Sep-08-18
 | | OhioChessFan: <It's actually true that every Canadian says "aboot" and "eh?"> Not to mention that they say "Detroit" with 5 syllables. |

You don't call up Pearl Harbor and say, "We're thinking of a surprise attack, is a Sunday morning in December good for you?"> I have warned my management that some Monday morning I won't feel like coming in and that will be it. I wasn't a bit disappointed that they didn't say they couldn't get along without me if I did that. |
